It's time to get back to projects on the boat. Matt takes over the heavy duty end of things while putting together our fuel system. A task we've been waiting a long time to complete, and a huge weight off our shoulders now that it is done. My job was much simpler, sewing screen covers for all our ports and hatches. Made from Phifertex Vinyl Mesh, these screens will keep us shaded and much cooler inside, still allow visibility out, and should *hopefully* keep the Florida heat from penetrating into our plexi and causing any more crazing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Canon R50 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Back up is a Canon 200d. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. I also use an Insta 360 and have two drones, a Magic mini2 and Mavic pro Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have limited communications with the outside World. Before we arrived in the BVI's we weren't sure what to expect. We had heard it was expensive, crowded and full of charterers. None of these things are good. We left ourselves a month here, but honestly there was a good chance we were going to leave after a couple of weeks given the mixed reviews we'd heard. So what's our verdict? WE'VE LEFT THE DOCK!, Which means, we are full time cruisers again!! To get here we did have to do a full provisioning of the boat as we do plan to spend a month or two in the Bahamas and we know how hard it can be to get your favorite things there sometimes. But, we're fully loaded now and ready to go! We also get back into our new headsail from Precision Sails, taking you through the steps where we have a consultation with Sales, take all the necessary measurements to make sure the new sail fits our boat perfectly, and talk with the head designer after he has received our measurements so he can show us what the new sail will look like on our boat, as well as bring up an issue with our old sail we didn't even know we had. Whenever we sail to a new country there is always that small window of time from when we first drop the hook to when we are officially checked into the country. That process can sometimes be quick and easy, but more often than not it’s a lengthy and frustrating process with multiple trips to various government agencies. And knowing exactly what documents are required, what taxes need to be paid, what restrictions need be observed can require a lot of research and the information you do find can be outdated, or each port can interpret the laws slightly differently. So checking into a country is always a bit of a nerve wracking experience because lurking behind the paperwork and bureaucracy is the ever present possibility that they might not let us in.

In this week's video we use the warm weather we're still getting to work on the storage areas up on the foredeck. We have 75 gallon water tanks on each side, but Matt wants a way to equalize the tanks so we're not too heavy on one side over the other. Drilling holes to the middle storage locker, Matt plans to add valves which will let water flow between the two areas when opened. Then, it's time for real excitement at the marina, as Terry has just arrived from Vietnam. He's in town to show one of the Max Cruise 44 hulls at the Annapolis show, and while he's in town, he came over to inspect our build. Not that him and Matt aren't talking constantly, but it was really nice for him to be able to walk through it and see it in person. Does he approve of our work so far? You'll have to watch and find out. Lastly, we get Steve on hull 4 to pop by for the evening, letting us get our first looks at the boat since it launched from the factory 16 months ago.
