We set sail from the island of Santa Cruz after completing the entry formalities of clearing into The Solomon Islands. We had heard about a fascinating group of islands about 30 miles away. The Reef Islands also known as Swallow Islands and Matema Islands are a group of 16 islands with a population of just over 5000 people. We were particularly interested in one of the small islands, where an English couple settled in the 1950's, obtained a lease, traded and raised a family.

Point being, things always change! This is Episode 26 of our adventure, we have 2 weeks until we launch the boat and move aboard. This week Hugh is making a custom bracket to ensure a more secure fit for the cleats on our synthetic toe rail. He fits the gimble to our IKEA Induction cooker and conducts a life jacket demo for the kids using an old jacket. Our 6 year old helps to sort the grab bag and informs us all how to use the first aid equipment. Whilst she doesn't get it all completely correct she says it with the unwavering confidence of her mother so you almost believe her. We are a family of five with plans for an epic adventure, sailing around the world. We have bought a boat we have to gut it, rebuild it, sell all of our possessions and have the guts to cast off. Une navigation paisible, Medelys avancée en moyenne entre 4 et 5 noeuds, ce qui nous correspond amplement. il y a eu de l'action ! oui, oui, 60 kmh de vent s'en prévenir, d'un coup ! pour nous c'était costaud. This time the sharks of Compass Cay come to visit us instead of the other way around. A steady stream of these beautiful creatures comes to the boat to hang out with us. A deeply hung over Lisa makes the hike to Rachel's Bubble Bath on Compass Cay, under protest. When we get there, it's so beautiful, she doesn't want to leave! The currents are a beast on the pipe creek side of Compass Cay. The sand is beautiful and we held well in spite of being anchored into the side of a sand shoal, but the current spun us in tight circles all night, so we moved closer to Starry Horizons around the corner. The current was still strong, but less spinny. The sharks didn't mind it, and we had a steady stream of them come to the boat, with several coming right to Lisa for her to pet them. We were all secretly rooting for Sueños to maintain their lead on corrected time in this last leg, our hearts won by the 'Ancient Dreamers'...But what do the elements have in store for them? Separado, morando sozinho num pequeno barraco, com os filhos morando muito distante (dois no Canadá e a caçula em Paraty) já estava aceitando a vida sedentária. Fazia minhas cainhadas diárias e dançava eventualmente. O restante do tempo era ocupado com leitura, rede social e televisão. Em 2022 fui visitar seus filhos no Canadá e meu filho mais velho tinha comprado um pequeno veleiro para navegar no lago de Montreal. Então, num passeio nessa pequena embarcação, meu filho iniciou um diálogo mais ou menos assim: - Velho! Você já foi um grande aventureiro por que não faz mais uma aventura? - Que aventura, cara! – respondi. - Vir de Veleiro do Brasil até o Canadá. Você precisa sair de casa. Precisa de objetivos de vida. - Você está louco? Nunca naveguei e não tenho dinheiro para comprar um veleiro! – retruquei. - Você não tem uma Previdência Privada? - Sim. Tenho. Mas ela é para quando eu ficar velho. É para minha saúde – respondi. - Mas você já não está velho? (emitiu uma sonora gargalhada). Então você retira esse dinheiro e compra um veleiro. Comece a estudar, assistir vídeos e ler livros. Depois você vende o veleiro e repõe a grana. A sugestão do filho foi como um trauma mental para seu velho pai. A partir desse dia aprender sobre velas tornou-se minha obsessão. Tudo na na minha vida foi relacionado à navegação. Comecei a devorar livros e assistir todo tipo de vídeo no YouTube. No primeiro semestre de 2023 tirei a habilitação da Marinha para navegar em lagos (pré-requisito para as demais). No segundo semestre consegui a carteira de Mestre Amador e, finalmente, em abril de 2024, conseguiu a mais temida e difícil prova aplicada pela Marinha do Brasil: Capitão Amador. O material de estudo para essa prova foi enorme. Vários livros, apostilas, curso grátis no YouTube e sites pagos. Havia dias que o velho pensava que seria impossível passar na prova. Coisas estudadas era rapidamente esquecida pela memória sexagenária. A grana para compra do Veleiro estava resguardada. Era só esperar o momento oportuno. Entretanto, restavam, ainda duas questões muito importantes: arrumar uma companheira de viagem e equacionar os custos da viagem com sua pequena aposentadoria. A conclusão foi que a grana seria insuficiente, principalmente quando as despesas fossem em outra moeda. Para piorar, descobriu que chegando ao Canadá, seria muito difícil voltar no mesmo caminho, tendo em vista que existe uma corrente marítima contrária. O caminho de volta mais fácil teria que ser pela Europa e África. Ou seja, gastar em euros. O visto para entrada em cada ilha ou país corresponderá a um quarto da minha renda, sem contar comida, óleo diesel e manutenção no veleiro tudo em dólar ou Euro. Apesar dos estudos orçamentários indicar a inviabilidade do projeto, no dia 14/10/24 mudei para um veleiro adquirido na cidade de Salvador. O planejamento da viagem estima dois anos de vida ao mar, cujo planejamento pode ser verificado nos dois primeiros vídeos do canal “Veio Doido no Mar” no YouTube. Pretendo navegar pela costa brasileira, passar pelas Ilhas do Caribe, passar pelo Canadá, Europa e África. Em torno de 18 meses viajando.

In this episode of @SailingAstridTheWombat we make it through a night at anchor in over 40 knot winds. When we wake up on our sailboat we are rewarded with an incredible sunrise. We then pull up anchor and sail out across Moreton Bay to get back to the Marina before the winds pick up again. The winds play havoc with is docking but we finally get the boat tied up safely capping off some great experience for us. ⛵ Gréement en chantier ! Aujourd’hui, mission simple en apparence : étarquer la grand-voile et vérifier l’état du génois. Mais bien sûr, rien ne se passe comme prévu ! 😅 Le génois est en piteux état, direction AZ Voile pour un lifting. One of our NSSC Sailability members, Jazz Turner, featured on ITV Meridian evening news at the end of her epic Project FEAR ("face everything and rise") journey. Jazz is terminally ill with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), and is a full-time wheelchair user. After 28 days sailing around the UK and Ireland single-handed, non-stop and unassisted, Jazz arrived back at Brighton Marina around 13:30 on Monday 30th June 2025. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. A letterbox drop, as chaotic as it may look sometimes (especially this one... it wasn't the cleanest) is in my mind as important to learn if you're flying spinnakers as it is to learn how to lower a jib or mainsail, if not more so. While there are socks and furlers for spinnakers that work fairly well, they do malfunction from time to time (user error or equipment failure), and when they do, it's vital to know how to drop a spinnaker without one of those pieces of equipment.
