Was brauchen wir sonst monatlich? In this episode of building the Haven 12 1/2 I begin building the centerboard & centerboard trunk, This part of the Joel White designed Haven 12 1/2 is what makes it differ from the Herreshoff 12 1/2 that the Haven 12 is inspired by. The centerboard trunk is also connected to the boats bedlogs. I also discusses the reclamation of lead bullets for casting the counterweight for the centerboard. “If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.” -Bob Emser, Boat Builder- https://amzn.to/2Lp4xwL Greg Rössel, Building Small Boats Subscribe for more Boat Building from The Art of Boat Building: https://www.youtube.com/user/bobemser/featured?sub_confirmation=1 Share this video with a friend: https://youtu.be/JGSNMR0V4YM How to support The Art of Boat Building. We use the north westerly winds to continue our journey south down through the Capricorn Bunker Group in the southernmost part of the Great Barrier Reef. We land our biggest Queensland Spanish Mackerel yet under spinnaker. On arrival at Lady Musgrave lagoon we explore the entrance with snorkels and the next day we anchor the yacht outside the reef to free dive with sharks and turtles! This video filmed in March 2019. An electric-powered 28,000lb hybrid bluewater sailing cruising boat? You betcha! It's a 1978 Formosa 41 sailboat for sale (coming from a popular William Garden design) that was also built as a Sea Tiger Sailboat, Yankee Clipper sailboat, CT41 & a Formosa Sea Wolf (there's a lot to figure out there!). It turns out to be a great system even for a sailboat this big (and heavy) ======= CAPT Q MERCH ===== https://www.etsy.com/shop/CaptainQYachtHunter ============== Support us ============== Like what we're doing & want to help?? During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie love about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time. Hopefully some inspiration to "Quit Job and Go Sailing". Old smoky may be gone, but she left us with quite the mess to clean up. As we had been concentrating so hard on reaching Langkawi, cleaning the bilge turned into a job that was forgotten and with Old Smoky now gone, the oil and grease remains. Along comes Bilgy Bonita! We have just sailed 2000nm through Indonesia and have arrived to Malaysia to complete major boat work, ready for the next big adventure. We departed Australia 18 months ago and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced different cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! We begin our journey on the day we are obliged to get out of the United States. We left with a crew of 3, me the beautiful Margarida and Tim the davit man. It is not the best time of year to sail across the gulf but there are no tropical disturbances in our path so we head out. We know there is going to be little wind for the first couple of days but we have plenty of fuel and an immaculate motor with less than 1000 hours so we believe we are ok. Unfortunately the motor dies and the fun begins. Give it thumbs a up if you liked this episode! Want more? We sail through some of the more remote and rarely visited Fijian Islands. We receive an amazing welcome in Moala with a traditional feast and a seat in the Chief's circle for Kava drinking. In this week's video, we drop the keel on a Fountaine Pajot Helia 44 and open it up to repair a leak on the top of the keel. This is not our boat. We're taking a short Hurricane break from Athena. We'll head back down to work on her after the boat show in Annapolis. If you still haven't purchased your ticket, you can get $5 off by using the coupon code 23SAILABS, and Ava and I will make a couple of bucks. If you see a 50-60ft center cockpit boat in really bad shape that seems like it might be for sale somewhere on the East Coast, we'd love to hear about it :) Send us an email at ohglorioussanding@gmail.com ** Links ** Sail Life website: https://www.saillifechannel.com/ Sail Life on Patreon: http://bit.ly/SailLifeOnPatreon Sail Life on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/saillife_ Sail Life on Facebook: http://bit.ly/SailLifeOnFacebook Sail Life on Twitter: http://bit.ly/SailLifeOnTwitter
Thank goodness we went with the hi-mods, as we were able to change these out ourselves and get our (newly-stepped) rig back up and going again on our own, without having to call in a rigger. Just some fun tips for you all that we learned while trying to drop a new main halyard, stepping the mast to re-configure the mast cap and changing out the hi-mods. Hope you all find some useful tidbits in here. Feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions! BIG NEWS at the end, too. Next week we'll be announcing our 3rd GIFT OF CRUISING right here on the YouTube channel. My Trans-At movie will also be available for rent then as well, Oct. 7th. Ain't life grand?

Watch as we finally take the leap to bond them on. We're so happy the weather has been in our favor over the past few weeks where we've been getting to work on a lot of outdoor projects. Although I think our April showers were postponed until May, because we've also been working around a number of rainy days here. (And I'm sitting through a surprise thunderstorm as I write this, lol.) But through the rain, we've been blessed with cooler days, which are perfect for bonding. Especially with our new methacrylate, because our newest batch only has an 18 minute work time before curing. The first project we're using it on - the starboard bow!! Something we help off on until spring, because our methacrylate only has a 6 month shelf life, and there's still plenty of things to bond on. After days of dry fitting, reinforcing, and a last check with out laser level, we were ready for the bonding. We even went so far as to drag my father in to help hold everything in place to make sure this went as smoothly as possible. Long story short, even with all our preparations, it did not go to plan. Make sure to watch our video to see where it went wrong. Installing a Serpentine belt on a Balmar-6 series 100 Amp alternator and a Dinghy Repair for good measure! After our brief stay in the marina we noticed we were pretty deficient in quality docking lines so we decided it was high time to upgrade our ragged old ones for some shiny new line. Khiara made the solo journey to Island Water World in St Georges harbor from one of our favorite hiding places Grand Mal anchorage just to the north. the journey began like many times before only this time at possibly the least convenient place the Outboard engine failed. With broken oar locks, no anchor and no radio, poor Khiara was able to get the motor working just in time to avoid being washed out to sea or onto the rocks between the bays and make it back to the boat. Adam set about repairing the outboard engine the following morning. The day after that the boat maintenance kick continued when Adam and Khiara installed a Serpentine belt kit on their Balmar-6 series 100 Amp alternator. The reason for this was to correct once and for all the overabundance of belt dust that had been accumulating for the past few years and had resulted in many shredded belts and many unnecessary alternator servicing's. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. How to Repair a Heat Exchanger /Insulate an Exhaust Riser:Yanmar Engine-Patrick Childress Sailing 44
Patrick Childress Sailing demonstrates how to Repair, Rebuild, Replace our Yanmar 4JH3E marine Heat Exchanger & exhaust Riser on our cruising sailboat. Also, how to insulate the new marine exhaust riser on our Yanmar 4JH3 Diesel engine. the old insulation was asbestos, but this new exhaust wrap is not. In this sailboat repair video, sailor Patrick Childress removes the old heat exchanger and the marine exhaust riser and brings it to a heat exchanger shop recommended to us called Empengani Progress, close to Richards Bay South Africa. They say they can rebuild the Heat Exchanger to like new condition. A new marine heat exchanger from Yanmar would cost $3000-$4000. Yanni Enterprises in Zululand Yacht Club boat yard made us a new exhaust riser out of 316 and 304 Stainless steel. It wasn’t cheap, but it was very well made and needed very little coercion to fit it back on to the heat exchanger of our Yanmar 4JH3E Diesel engine. Empengani Progress shows how to take apart the heat exchanger. They then cleaned it all out, welded and rebuilt deteriorated parts of the Corroded cap on the heat exchanger, reusing the core, and then put it all back together again, pressure tested it, and then charged us a very reasonable rate too! Much cheaper than a new heat exchanger! it is always difficult to decide whether to replace or repair a heat exchanger. Once the new exhaust riser was fabricated, Patrick reinstalls it. Because Patrick had removed all of the asbestos insulation on the old marine riser, we had to find a new material to insulate the new exhaust riser, and find out how to insulate a marine riser. There were many Yanmar spare parts that we needed for this rebuild, and we fell back on our old source in the USA, Toad Marine Supply (aka MarineDieselDirect.com, LaserSailingDirect.com, SunfishDirect.com, BoatDollyDirect.com, and Torresen Marine Inc). They are always responsive to emails, and double check everything with part diagrams to be sure we are all talking about the same engine part. They ship Yanmar, Westerbeke, Universal and Volvo Penta Diesel engine spare parts all over the world, as well as other marine supplies, very quickly and very correctly. With the weather clearing in Auckland, Emirates Team New Zealand took advantage of a window to quietly launch the raceboat that will defend the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona in October. The hopes of this sailing-mad nation rest on a progressive and heavily refined design, a (big) step-on from their America’s Cup winning boat ‘Te Rehutai’ of AC36. The full naming ceremony and blessing is not scheduled until later this month, but time is a valuable currency in this competition and the clock is ticking. It was a welcome sight to see Sir Ben Ainslie leading from the front today out in a very placid and peaceful, if somewhat chilly Palma, Mallorca and bringing to this America’s Cup cycle a new acronym that is straight out of Formula 1 (we presume). In interview, Ainslie repeatedly referred to the ‘HMI’ – the Human Machine Interface – that crossover point where technology must relent to the human touch and vice versa. Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024
