Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. No Food, Fix everything, Too much wind, Not enough wind, Beautiful Culture... https://www.sailingnandji.com/ In this episode of Sailing Nandji, it is all about life as a liveaboard in remote Indonesia. Living on a sailboat means we need to be 100% self sufficient as we are travelling extremely remote areas of the far west islands of Indonesia where help is a very long way away. We go through the struggles of keeping Nandji in top shape, what we do to find fresh food to eat and then continue on our way sailing through the islands. We have been in the southern islands of the Mentawai archipelago for the last couple of months and it is time to make our way back north en route to Thailand. We enter into the stunning Telos Islands after being away from any kind of developed civilisation for weeks, hopefully here we can replenish our cupboards as they are very empty. We take Flubber the tender on our longest mission yet to visit the local village in search of food! We head back to sea only to be confronted at night by a bigger vessel charging straight at us. We are on edge as this is the closest and scariest call we have had on the sea... With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra where we are living the island life and chasing the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we are returning to Thailand in the coming months and then taking the northern route of the Indian Ocean to the Andaman islands and onto Sri Lanka before heading south to Chagos and across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trades begin again! The adventure is just beginning! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! It’s a daunting thought at the moment as the season is wrong for travelling west to east. As we have explored the amazing islands throughout the Philippines, we have wanted to understand more and more what it truly means to be Filipino. As we thought about ways to try and experience Filipino culture in the most authentic fashion, we came up with a crazy idea. What if we approached strangers on the streets and asked them if we could cook them lunch. But here was the twist - we would ask them if we could cook for them in THEIR house. It's a question that you probably don't hear often, and for some a question you may never hear. We knew going into this social experiment that we may face rejection, and that our proposition was a lot to ask of a stranger. But we set out onto the streets with our heads high. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Rebecca Childress made it a priority just weeks after Patrick passed away from Covid 19 to make her sailboat “Brick House” safer for herself and less experienced crew, determined that she would leave Cape Town and continue her circumnavigation. She adds a new Liferaft, as well as ACR AISLink MOB units for the life vests. She also works through a checklist of hundreds of items trying to make sure everything is safe for this very big ocean crossing. At least one of the items on the checklist saves the boat! She comes to feel the great burden and responsibility and risk of making sure her boat is seaworthy and safe! New Captain Michael Hayward does his best to make sure the boat is ready to sail safely across the Atlantic! Patrick Childress silently and strongly guides them from within Rebecca’s heart and soul. They are now ready to sail cross the Atlantic Ocean, from Cape Town South Africa to Brazil and the Caribbean, on SV Brick House. They make further upgrades to the sailboat to prepare for the long ocean crossing.
