Erst genieße ich mit Heinz, Wilm und Klaus noch ein paar unbeschwerte Tage auf St. Martin, bis uns die Pandemie auch in der Karibik plötzlich und hart einholt. Der Törn wird Hals über Kopf auf St. Barths abgebrochen und ich segle alleine weiter nach Martinique, um Anke zu treffen. Während der zweitägigen Fahrt dorthin erlässt Frankreich ein Dekret zum Lockdown und, als ich morgens in Fort de France ankomme, sind die Grenzen geschlossen. Aber ich treffe Anke dort nach 2 Monaten wieder und mit einheimischer Hilfe können wir trotzdem Proviant und Diesel an Bord nehmen. Glücklicherweise kann ich einen Tag später in Le Marin einklarieren. Vor Sainte-Anne liegen Anke und ich wochenlang im Lockdown vor Anker, aber machen das Beste daraus, bis Anke schließlich Mitte April einen Rückflug nach Deutschland bekommt. We started to take on water while traversing a very turbulent waterway. Water was rushing in fast and the bilge was working hard. It took us around three minutes to find the issue. As soon as we decide to head straight to Horta the forecast changes and we get a bit more waves and wind in our direction than we bargained for. Especially during night time when you end up in conditions you weren't in before (pretty high waves coming from directly abeam) this feels kind of spooky, when it gets light it all looks a lot better already. I expect that the boat was a lot less worried than I was. And yes I know, it's impossible to see how high the waves are on video. According to the US weather organization they were almost twice as high as we experienced in our F10 to Ibiza episode even though the wind was a lot less. We didn't see anything over 42 knots where we sailed, the really strong winds were at least 100 miles north of us at all times.

Our return to the Montebello Islands sees us catching up with our friends Lex and Mossy, a chaotic proposition at the best of times. Another Upwind passage competing with Currents and Ships, then a Scooter? https://www.sailingnandji.com This week on Sailing Nandji, After successfully clearing back into Indonesia, we head to sea on a upwind passage South to the island of Rote in search of some surf for Yosh. There is a strong opposing current which makes sailing upwind difficult in the light conditions, throw a few ships in the mix and everything becomes exciting! We visit the busy local market and load up on supplies. Walking through town resembles a free range farm as the goats, chickens, pigs and cows roam where they feel. Exploring the island by Indonesias favourite transport, the Scooter! We discover some beautiful white sandy beaches and return the following day so Yosh can have his first surf in 6 months! Not wasting time though, it is back to sea we go heading West to Malaysia where we plan to install our new engine! We are a young couple with a dog, who with no sailing experience, bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We have been in Indonesia for a couple of months cruising and are now high tailing to Malaysia for boat work. We departed Australia 18 months ago and have since explored some amazing countries, met some amazing people and experienced cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.
