Our jib sail furler gets messed up heading into beautiful Conception Island. How do you screw up the only sail you can fly? We figured out a way. Conception Island is breathtaking. Parrot fish looking up at me as I swim with them, thinking 'whatthef@ckare you? Long reefs, teaming with life. A beach that's got to be experienced to be believed, and me, Lisa, meeting my first reef shark, a lemon shark as big as me! Pop some corn, pour your favourite beverage and settle in. This is our longest video in a while. The beauty of this place cannot be exaggerated. We tried to capture as much as we can, so this is not a quick hi-lite reel. This island, her reefs and beaches, need to be savoured. Relax, feel the vibe, and count how many times you see me flinch while I hang out with my first reef shark! Highlights from Race Day 2 of the 2022 Resolute Cup, held September 12 - 17 at the New York Yacht Club - Harbor Court in Newport, R.I. The 23 teams competing in the 2022 Resolute Cup arrived on Monday, September 12, for on-site registration and mandatory practice on Tuesday, September 13. Racing is scheduled to run Wednesday, September 14, through Saturday, September 17, starting each day at 1030. Teams will compete in a qualifying series during the first two days of racing. For the qualifying series, the fleet will be broken into two groups and each group will sail roughly half of its races in the RS21 and half in the Sonar. Teams will be randomly assigned to a boat, and follow a rotation schedule throughout racing each day. There will be no bye races. After the qualifying series is complete, the top six from each fleet will move on to compete in the Gold Series Finals in RS21s. The remaining teams will compete in the Silver Series Finals in Sonars. Finals will begin on Friday, September 16, and all teams will start with a zeroed-out scoreline. This week we tackle the dirtiest — and most critical — stage of our engine install. With the engine finally out, Timo gets to work in the engine room: first tidying the spaghetti junction of cables so everything can come off the walls for painting later, and then cutting out the old engine bed. It’s tough, dusty work — with a few surprises along the way, including water trapped inside the old bed and supports left over from the boat’s racing days. To keep the dust down, Timo even sprays soapy water as he cuts. Meanwhile, the kids and I escape to a hotel while the worst of the grinding takes place — and of course, it all happens right around the captain’s birthday. By the end, the old engine bed is out, and we get our first side-by-side look at the old and new foundations. Next week: the real challenge begins as we prepare to laminate the new one into place.
