Entry to the saloon via an easy-to-use electric washboard, reveals a vast, stunning interior with a well-appointed U-shaped galley to port, a spacious nav station and desk to starboard and a dinette area that comfortably seats 8-10 people. The dinette’s island bench seat doubles as a coffee table and hidden behind the portside lounge is a bar on an electric lift. There is also an additional drawer fridge and washer/dryer. The stylish cabinetry features secure chrome latches on the many lockers throughout. Her three-cabin layout includes a luxurious owner’s suite with island bed forward and two double cabins aft, one of which can convert to two singles. Each cabin has its own bathroom, including stand up shower, large sink and electric flush toilet. Both aft cabins have tall headroom and overhead lockers. In addition, a crew cabin with two bunks and complete bathroom is accessed via a large deck hatch, and makes an ideal hideaway for teenagers. The keel-stepped three-spreader Selden rig with inboard shrouds and twin backstays offers several sail configurations and is strongly supported with chainplates running into the hull grid. The in-mast furling allows the main to be reefed to any position for safer and easier sail handling. The cockpit with a large folding tabletop is huge and cleverly avoids clutter. A fibreglass archway supports the bimini and the large dodger with clears. At anchor, simply lower the electric swim platform for easy access into the dinghy and the water. Sail controls are kept away from the front of the large cockpit where six people can easily shelter under the large bimini, while the sailors can get on with the job of handling the sails at the twin pedestals, made easier with the help of four electric winches. All lines are neatly stowed in two cockpit rope bags. Si Spirit is ready to set sail anywhere in the world in perfect safety, comfort and style. The second and final day of a 2-day solo sail camping trip with my trailerable 2010 Precision 18 sailboat at the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area and on Flaming Gorge Reservoir in Utah. This episode covers weighing anchor and sailing across the reservoir in light winds in the morning, then motoring with my Torqeedo electric outboard the last stretch into the mouth of the Gorge as the wind dies. Once in the Gorge, the winds were ideal, and I spent the rest of the afternoon sailing below the sheer red cliffs of the Flaming Gorge. It was a truly wonderful sailing adventure! Being a regular Colorado high mountain sailor, this was one of the few days of the season I did not have to put a reef in my sails. Winds on the Flaming Gorge can be treacherous, and storms are known to come up fast--the forecast and weather should always be watched closely. On this late September trip, I was able to enjoy sailing the entire two days under full sails. Fall sailing in the "West" (Western United States) is usually very pleasant and I do most of my long-distance trailer sailing trips each year in the Fall. In this new series of The Rogue Rigger I take you along on our campaign to go to the 5o5 World Championships in Hayling Island, England. The worlds start in July of 2026 so we have just a year and a half to go. Follow Mike and I on our journey to get to the world championships, from boat upgrades, practice days, regattas, debriefs and some shenanigans along the way. In this episode I start building a brand new mast for our boat. This mast is a Selden Alto section built to the Rogue Rigging Spec. This spec was put together by myself, Howard Hamlin (505 Sailing Legend) and Mike Martin (Also a 505 Sailing Legend). As this mast is identical to our other mast we are trying a few new things. Couple of the big changes are getting rid of the 2:1 main halyard and going with a halyard lock. As well we are using a different spin halyard cleat setup. ***Just so you know! Vendée Globe 2012 - Jour 55 - 3 Janvier 2013. Bataille dans l'Atlantique Sud. Le défilé au cap Horn se poursuit avec la nuit prochaine, le passage d'un quatrième candidat : Alex Thomson. Sur son bateau argenté, le Britannique s'apprête à doubler le rocher pour la première fois de sa carrière en solitaire. De l'Atlantique au sud à l'île Campbell, les conditions de navigation et les enjeux sont bien différents. Mais les treize marins sont unis dans un même combat : finir. Une autre planète Après François Gabart et Armel le Cléac'h le 1er janvier, Jean-Pierre Dick (Virbac-Paprec 3), a passé le cap Horn à 5h42 ce matin (heure française). Le Niçois dont c'était le 4e passage, a eu la fête gâchée par des conditions de navigation exécrables. D'abord il faisait nuit noire, mais surtout, il a été accueilli par une mer « démente », avec des vagues de face, secouant son bateau dans tous les sens. C'est donc un « Jipé » fatigué et un peu anxieux qui répondait ce matin au téléphone : « ce Horn, je l'ai passé intellectuellement, mais je n'ai rien vu. Et ce n'était pas très festif ». Trois des treize solitaires naviguent maintenant en Atlantique. Un autre océan, presque une autre planète. Les marins s'y sentent d'avantage en sécurité car les terres ne sont jamais très loin. Mais ils renouent aussi avec des allures que détestent ces luges de mer que sont les 60 pieds Imoca : le près. François Gabart (MACIF) et Armel Le Cléac'h (Banque Populaire) sont en plein dans le sujet. Sous l'influence d'une dépression argentine, ils naviguent au débridé dans un vent de nord-ouest de 25 nœuds et sous un ciel couvert. Leur remontée vers le Brésil sera une succession de petites dépressions et de transitions anticycloniques à négocier, comme autant de haies à franchir. Le jeu stratégique va s'ouvrir. Dick espère y trouver une opportunité pour réduire son retard. Thomson bientôt en Atlantique Prochain cap-hornier en vue: Alex Thomson (Hugo Boss), attendu vers minuit à la pointe sud du Chili. C'est l'occasion de souligner la fantastique course que mène le marin gallois depuis le départ. Alex s'est maintenu en 4e position à bord d'un bateau d'ancienne génération, sur lequel il a dû réparer à deux reprises sa barre de liaison. Depuis le 11 décembre, après la casse d'un de ses deux hydrogénérateurs, il rationne aussi sa consommation d'énergie. Après trois tentatives infructueuses (abandons sur les deux précédents Vendée Globe et dans Around Alone), Alex est sur le point de doubler le Horn en solitaire, pour la première fois de sa carrière. A bord du bateau argenté, le moral est au beau fixe. Les 15 prochains jours seront le théâtre d'un joyeux défilé au cap Horn. Jean Le Cam (SynerCiel) qui vient de respecter la dernière porte Pacifique, est le 5e marin sur la liste. Et derrière lui, il pourrait bien y avoir embouteillage. Comme les 5 doigts de la main Depuis plus d'une semaine, un nouveau groupe est en train de se souder. Profitant de conditions météo très favorables, Javier Sanso (Acciona 100% Ecopowered) et Arnaud Boissières (AKENA Vérandas) sont venus recoller au tableau arrière de Mirabaud et Gamesa. Cheminées Poujoulat, après ces deux arrêts techniques, s'est aussi immiscé dans le quatuor. Aujourd'hui, ces cinq bateaux se tiennent en moins de 280 milles et pourraient bien franchir le cap Horn en l'espace de 6 heures, en tout début de semaine prochaine. De quoi raviver la flamme de ce petit groupe de chasseurs qui progresse en ce moment dans un fort vent d'ouest et une mer désordonnée. « On fait des surfs violents, c'est assez mouvementé » indiquait Dominique Wavre, toujours perclus de courbatures après un combat de 2h30 avec son gennaker, 48 heures auparavant (bout d'amure cassé, galette explosée, 350m2 de voile déroulés à ramener sur le pont en pleine nuit après quelques acrobaties sur le bout dehors). Un même combat Cette petite course dans la course fait rêver Bertrand de Broc qui aurait bien aimé être de la partie. En attendant de meilleurs augures, le skipper de Votre Nom autour du Monde avec EDM Projets prend son mal en patience. D'autant qu'il devra se coltiner le gros anticyclone qui lui barre la route au niveau de la porte ouest Pacifique. Initiatives-cœur devrait passer cette porte avec moins de difficulté. En attendant, Tanguy de Lamotte a sorti son casque anti bruit. Des rafales à 45 nœuds malmènent le bateau rouge transformé en véritable machine à laver ! En dernière position, Alessandro Di Benedetto (Team Plastique), au sud de l'île Campbell, semble avoir résolu ses problèmes de pilote automatique. Il a fêté cela en se confectionnant un sorbet au citron avec la grêle amoncelée sur le pont !
