Typically the trade winds in this area blow pretty good from East to West and come with short steep wind swell. We are on our way back to Bonaire against the typical trades to meet our friends who are flying in for a visit. After a sleepless night dealing with repairs, Boris tried to tidy his boat and get some rest. Tricky winds and a messy boat ar e on the menu. Despite the challenges, he pulls off an impressive MacGyver-style fix and finds inspiration in the incredible albatrosses and seabirds around him. "I will tack now. Well, this is the first tack since a very long time and normally we're not tacking in the Southern Ocean. We should be diving downwind, but this low pressure went away. We're now in the high and the wind is turning against us. But tonight we should already be reaching again. I really had a big mental downer this morning. I will tell you more about it later. Standard brass fittings installed by some manufacturers, or added by owners, are subject to dezincification and can fail catastrophically. This can sink a boat very quickly... https://youtu.be/lGxisXPIxqw The #1 Reason that Boats Sink Bronze seacocks are not immune to problems as some models have standard brass valve stems, which can suffer from dezincification and then fail, rendering the valve inoperable. In order to avoid these problems we replaced all our through-hull assemblies with all DZR Brass fittings and this video shows you exactly how we did it. We go into great detail about every step of the job. Hinchinbrook Island boasts bushland, rainforest, waterfalls and 1200m mountain peaks that kiss the sky. We take advantage of the solitude to strip down and once again, bask in the beauty of nudity in nature. We take our baby Bearded Dragon, Sonya to the waterfalls for her first swim in fresh water. It's safe to say that we think she loved it. We have only a short 3 days here before continuing our journey north to Brook Island. The canvas dodger we had inherited aboard Avocet had seen better days; the frame was not stout, the dark blue canvas had been sun bleached and abused over the years, and perhaps the worst trait of all was that the strataglass was as transparent as milk making any sort of attempt to see through it impossible. Although it served us well as a windbreak and had gotten us this far in our journey we knew it was time to upgrade.
