Impi is a catamaran sailing around the world. We have returned to the water after a refit of Sd 60 saildrives and other minor repairs, anti-fouling etc. Now back in the water we sail to the Bay Of Islands to watch weather for our next departure. With no weather window opening, we delay our departure for other islands and are fortunate to meet our daughter in Auckland, friends we last saw in Cuba visit Impi, and receive some favours from folks who follow our travels on media. It was a beautiful experience to meet a young family who we had never met (in the flesh) and who have followed our travels over the internet now join us for a very memorable day sailing in the Bay Of Islands. From 2016 to 2020 I sailed single-handed around the world on 'Fathom', a Vancouver 28 pocket cruising boat after leaving my job, career and land life in my wake. My voyage was the adventure of a lifetime and I returned home to the UK 4 years and 3 months later. 37,200 nautical miles had passed under the keel in a solo circumnavigation via the Panama Canal and South Africa. This is my attempt at piecing together a 2-part film about my adventures in the Voyage of Fathom. ​I hope you enjoy watching. Part 2: In this 2nd and final episode, I arrive in Cape Town at the end of 2018 before sailing up the South Atlantic to the Caribbean via stops at Saint Helena and Fernando da Noronha. On approach to Grenada in April 2019, I cross my ground track from two years earlier to complete a loop of the world. After a few months break from the boat, I return to the Caribbean in October 2019 before sailing back across the Atlantic to the UK via a stop in the Azores. On August 8th, 2020, 4 years and 3 months after sailing away, I arrive back to the Solent and am escorted back to Yarmouth Harbour by friends and family. Here are some of the highlights and most memorable moments including swimming with whale sharks, Caribbean island hopping, Coronavirus lockdown in Antigua, being stuck onboard at anchor for 3 weeks in the Azores whilst the Border remained closed, and of course returning home after so long away. My boat is called 'Fathom', an 8.5m Vancouver 28 built by Northshore in 1991. Long keeled, cutter rigged and with plenty of storage, she is the perfect pocket ocean cruiser. Based on the successful design of the Nordic Folkboat, more than 750 of these were made. Some have circumnavigated the globe, others have won races. All have been adored by their owners. The time has come, we're leaving the Caribbean to sail across the Atlantic towards Europe! Matt takes a minute to explain the situation with our watermaker, why it isn't working, and why we decide to leave anyway. Making a 12 mile sail from Simpson Bay on the south side of St. Martin, to Marigot Bay on the north side, we fill up our water tanks and get on our way. The first two days at sea are just spent getting into the swing of things, but by day 4 we find ourselves in the middle of the Bermuda/Azores high and have lost all our wind. It is a beautiful thing to be hundreds of miles from any land and have the water be glass calm around you. We take advantage of the calm by putting down our swim platform to take bucket baths off the back of the boat. With only 60 gallons of water to get us through 30 days of showers and dishes, we need to conserve it everywhere we can. Much love from the Atlantic Ocean! We are back to our usual series chronology where we are in Grand Cayman. Sailing is a roller coaster in so many ways. Time in the boatyard is never one of the highs it has to be said, but so far our lifts have gone smoothly and to plan. Not this time! I did have plans to tackle some areas of the boat that I had never had apart before, not because of any apparent issue, but just for piece of mind before our Atlantis crossing. Silly of me to think there would be time for non urgent preventative maintenance! Boats have a habit of giving you something pressing to do just when you thought you had time to breath. Our issue is the base of the compression post which has now moved about 10mm down on the starboard side. This is a serious situation that will require the mast to be un stepped and the compression post taken out. It is something we have been monitoring ever since we bought Fair Isle as it was clear that there had been movement in this area in the past which the surveyor thought was probably settlement when new. Well it seems that wasn't the case and having the rigging all up to proper tension now has prompted it to sink some more so something clearly has to be done. The good thing is we are in the right place to get this done properly along with many other boat issues. We are very happy with the top sides now and having fun meeting some interesting people. We have made it through Hurricane Irma, and so has Elements of Life! Indiantown fared quite well through the storm, as far as we can tell there is no damage to any of the boats in the water or in the work yard and storage (except one shredded head sail). Matt and I stayed on the boat through the storm and did receive some strong gusts through the late night on Monday (over 70 mph we think), but overall did very well. The worst thing to happen to the marina was the surge, which we still don't know if it was solely rain or if the locks were letting water out of Lake Okeechobee. The docks were 2 feet under water when we woke up this morning, making it very hard to nearly impossible for people to get on and off their boats. Power has been down for 24 hours, although there is a generator running for the office and kitchen. It is expected power will be down for three days at the marina, and up to two weeks at the docks where the power boxes are underwater. We are very thankful that the damage here was not further and no one was injured. Once again, we could not be more thankful to be in Indiantown when a storm has come through.

Boats over $200,000 and sailboats under $100,000 for liveaboard cruising all over the world.

This week we finally get to explore the beautiful Raroia atoll in the tuamotos, French Polynesia. We dingy to the beach and discover an absolute paradise. It’s just us and our two other buddy boats that are here, otherwise we are completely by ourselves. But ouch! The corals are bad on the island, Kieran can’t stand it so he manages to get a hold of a “new” pair of shoes (I am very skeptical). I show off my best “reef walk” as I try to keep up with Kieran. He finally has had enough and starts to carry me instead... Back on the boat we start to tackle the broken hydrovane. Kieran goes more in-depth what actually happened and is actually glad it happened the way it did. We join our forces and after a while it’s back to 100%. Just another day in paradise! Join our crew! Although the Little Bahama Banks made for some perfect sailing though the afternoon, once we hit the Straights of Florida and the Gulf Stream, wind and seas picked up unexpectedly and made for quite the bumpy ride back to Palm Beach. While in Florida we tended to our laundry, which had been ignored since we left Indiantown nearly two months before, and hung around Peanut Island to check out a little of the crazyness of all the power boaters that come out on the weekend.
