We set our sights on The Human Rights museum as we had heard about this back in the US. It is a stunning building and architecturally astounding. There is enough information packed in this museum to take days to get through. It boasts impressive interactive exhibits. This museum is a must see. A short walk from the museum is the infamous “dick” bridge. It is a lovely bridge if I do say so myself, but there is a very phallic beam as the centerpoint. Either way it is fun to look at and talk about all the shapes that it looks like. This bridge spans the Red River. It was a big hub for trading in the late 1800’s. Today it has pontoon boat tours (fenders out of course) and will host a Dragon Boat race in early September. As we sat in the warmth of the late afternoon at The Forks overlooking the river, we got to watch the Dragon Boat practice. Very intimidating sport from what I saw. Needless to say, when you are downtown, put the max amount of time in the parking meter so it doesn’t interrupt your sightseeing. Also, take some selfies in front of the Giant Winnipeg sign in the park near The Human Rights Museum, it is just plain fun! This is The Boat Life. This week aboard Stella Overboard, boat life throws a few more problems our way. From discovering the main pin holding our boom to the mast had started working its way out, to watermaker issues, outboard problems, lazy jack repairs, and the never-ending reality of fixing things in remote places… this episode is a pretty accurate look at what cruising life is really like. Luckily, we’ve learned that sailing is mostly about figuring things out with what you have, carrying as many spares as possible, doing a little creative jimmy-rigging, searching the internet, and accepting help from the amazing people you meet along the way. But after everything that breaks on the boat, somehow the biggest disappointment of the week comes when we think we’ve finally hooked a fish… only to pull up something VERY different 😂 We’re also continuing our journey north through Indonesia, getting closer and closer to Malaysia while trying to squeeze in a few more waves before we leave. Crossing the Kiel Canal by sailboat is a must-do passage for any sailor in Northern Europe. In this episode we set sail from Denmark in thick white fog and make our way to Kiel, Germany. After entering the Kiel Canal, we experience one of the most unique passages of our journey so far: the locking process and crossing the canal...under beautiful autumn sunshine. The most thrilling moment? Locking in at Brunsbüttel alone, in the dark fog. With zero visibility, it became one of the most surreal and unforgettable experiences in our sailing life! Tag 1 nach der Jahrhundertflut - Wir überführen unsere Maxi 84 auf Umwegen. Moin! Wir sind Rika und Johannes aus Hamburg. Zusammen mit Rikas Schwester Julia segeln wir nach und nach durch die Dänische Südsee, um unsere Segel-Skills zu erweitern und das tolle Wassersport-Revier zu erkunden. Von den vielen kleinen Inseln und dem teilweise klaren Wasser sind wir immer wieder fasziniert. Die Ostsee-Törns sind definitiv unsere Highlights. Normalerweise trefft ihr uns jedoch auf unserem Heimatrevier direkt vor unserer Haustür an: Der Außenalster in Hamburg. Denn, wir haben uns im April 2021 einen Kielzugvogel aus Holz gekauft. Zwischen April und Oktober genießen wir also das Segeln auf der Knysna [ˈnaɪzna] (so haben wir unser Boot getauft, nach einer Stadt in Südafrika benannt). Die Wintersaison haben wir die letzten beiden Jahre genutzt, um step-by-step den Refit am Vollholzboot durchzuführen. Dabei haben wir uns immer nach dem Motto gerichtet: Learning by Doing. Im Herbst 2023 haben wir uns einen weitern Traum erfüllt und uns eine Maxi 84 gekauft. Diese wurde von uns Ende Oktober nach Kiel überführt. Ab jetzt widmen wir uns im Winterlager auch diesem schwedischen Segelklassiker. The main difference is how long they transmit once activated: an EPIRB transmits for 48 hours (minimum), and a PLB transmits for 24 hours (minimum). Another key difference is registration. An EPIRB is registered to the boat, so the registration includes more vessel-specific questions. A PLB is registered to a person, and the registration focuses on who you are, what activities you do, and your emergency contacts—without necessarily asking for boat information. Once you register an EPIRB or PLB, you can log into the database and update your beacon with an itinerary or float plan, and even change what you’re doing (for example, if you’re taking a PLB hiking or camping) so rescue personnel have better context.
