So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life. We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. With a massive Indian influence in the major cities to Kava drinking locals in the outer islands. It is an experience that we will never forget. In this adventure we entertain ourselves in the big city of Suva then set sail to Kandavu known for it’s incredible diving on astrolobe reef and Kava. The diving was indeed spectacular. From Manta Rays to Dog Tooth Tuna. Kandavu has it all including Kava! As we sail around the world we always do research before setting arriving in a new place. We google. We read blogs of other cruisers. This time we came across the logs of the sailing vessel Delos (the first pioneers of sailing youtube channels). Sure enough, they came to Kandavu and sailed right into Kavala Bay. It's no coincidence that the word 'Kava' is inside 'Kavala Bay'. As soon as we stepped foot on land we were invited that night to a Kava ceremony. Kava is a big deal in Fiji as well as well as many other nations in the South Pacific especially Vanuatu. Kava is a muddy drink made by grinding up Kava root. It's a sedative, anesthetic and euphoriant. Basically it's effects are much like alcohol but perhaps not as strong. Finally after much shenanigans in Kandavu, we were off to the Yasawas, the sunny side of Fiji where the beautiful beaches, sunsets and scenery did not disappoint! This dangerous section of ocean between New Zealand and Fiji must be treated respectfully when choosing a weather window. Sailing across the Indian Ocean can be fearsome. Pirates off of Somalia combined with storms off of South Africa make the choice of route difficult, throw in closed borders due to the pandemic and we find ourselves in a very difficult situation. Our first days in the Bahamas led us to the clearest water in the world, where it is like looking at an aquarium from our deck. After entering the Little Bahama Bank, we spend a full day motoring through light winds only to get half way through. Dropping anchor in the middle of nowhere for the night, we wake us to glass calm water and a pod of dolphins coming to say hello. Making our way to Powell Cay that night, we spend a few days exploring this beautiful and uninhabited island, hiking through jungle like trails and even taking Georgie for walks on the beach while enjoying beautiful sunsets. This week, I find the answer to a question I asked myself “Why does sailing across the Bay Biscay have such bad reputation?!” Ahead of our passage from La Forêt Fouesnant to A Coruna, the conditions looked great, and the first hours of the passage were just as fantastic. Less than 100 nautical miles in, the situation took a turn for the worse, and we all found ourselves having to extend the limits of our comfort zone in a rapid manner. I felt the most scared since we started sailing, until I decided to practice facing my fear. Next time we encounter such conditions, I will probably not feel as scared, but I now definitely know where Biscay gets its reputation from!
