There's something really nice about an early morning boat ride, when the sun is shining and the winds are low. Located Right next to Beusoleil, the Gin Islands are just two of 63 islands that make up the Georgian Bay Islands National Park. Well known to Aboriginal peoples as a bad weather refuge and stopping place, Beausoleil was used as a base for hunting and trading as far back as 7,000 years ago! Early voyageurs marked it as a midpoint on their travels between the Severn River and north Georgian Bay. Today it's a great recreational boating destination, with incredible views. Just be careful getting in. As always on Georgian Bay, there are plenty of rocks around!
A Seawind 1260 Circumnavigation A story from a European couple who set out with big sailing goals and a brand new Seawind 1260, inspiring those who dare to dream... If you're wondering "could this be us?" ...then this interview is for you. Klaus and Andrea didn’t grow up crossing oceans. Before taking delivery of their Seawind 1260 in Vietnam in 2022, their sailing background was limited to short seasonal trips and sailing charters. Yet they made a bold decision: Set sail around the world and place their trust in a proven vessel designed to be a silent partner through the steap learning curve they were taking on. Perhaps what they lacked in years of sailing experience, they made up for in planning, preparation, persistence, teamwork, and ultimate confidence in the platform beneath them. This is not “fun in the sun” cruising. This is real bluewater sailing and a reminder that you don’t need to be born an ocean sailor to become one when you have big dreams, the right mindset and the right boat to turn it all into reality. If you’ve been dreaming about offshore passages but questioning whether you’re ready enough, this story might be the perspective you need. It proves that with the right partner on the water, the transition from coastal dreamer to global explorer is within your reach. Jon Olsson's a Swedish Vlogger with great taste in boats first introduced me to Iron Boats (his video below) and ever since i've been trying to get a ride on one. So wow... this is a boat that has achieved simplicity of design, simplicity of operation and simplicity in transport (important for Aussies/Kiwi's) and the result is a boat that you will think nothing of using in a wide variety of sea states, and due to the RIB like function of the fender you will also benefit from super simple operation around docks and other boats. This boat provides a lot of what brands like Axopar give you in terms of convenience and performance but at a cheaper price point and with less complexity. It has just enough to enjoy a day out and nothing else. It makes up for that by just being one of the fastest and most enjoyable drives you've ever had. Seriously consider this if you are looking for a RIB, trailerable boat or adventure boat alternative. I actually has so much fun i'll be filming a Part 2 later this year on some more Iron Boats to test them further up the East Coast of Aus. I predict this could be a future cult classic in Australia. From W.A to the Goldie and the entire East Coast you can imagine a lot use use cases for this boat so let me know your thoughts. It is getting COLD in the Northeast already and we are still in Nantucket, MA but before we can continue sailing South we need to prepare the boat and wait out the first Nor'easter of the season. Hopefully we can get to the Chesapeake Bay so that we can get LaurieSue's final bit of warranty work resolved. How can we make this boat a safer boat? This video addresses safety concerns on a Nauticat 38 Motor Sailor. The host specifically mentions the elevated aft deck and sliding doors as potential risks in heavy weather. He shares ideas to modify the boat to improve the safe boat experience. How we want to make our boat safer. How we want to rig our ketch rigged motor sailer. We have a Nauticat 38 motorsailer, and that is a fantastic boat. It is only two things we dont like with this boat. First thing is the elevated aft deck, that we think is unsecure in heavy weather. The other thing is the sliding doors on the side. I dont feel safe working on the aft deck, and I dont like climbing outside the boat in heavy weather. So, what can we do? I think I have found a solution. Follow me, and please give your comments on this down below. I really appreciate your comments on this. Have a look at this. This is our boat, with the sails she has today. I have rigged her so that I can do all sail handling from the aft deck. This works perfect in nice weather, but in heavy weather I don't like working on the aft deck. Then I want t stay inside the pilot house. So now I think: How can I operate the sails from inside the pilot house? Lets start with the mizzen. I can take a reef in the mizzen before I go indoors, and if the sheet is going from the aft deck to a position just outside the sliding door, then I can open the door and adjust this line. That should work, dont you think? Then, I have looked at the foresail. In heavy weather I want to furl the genoa in completely, and roll out a smaller self tacking jib. That will look like this. If this is self tacking, I can have the sheet to a winch just outside the sliding door. Then I can open the door, and operate this sheet as well from inside the pilot house. Then, the mainsail remains. I dont use the mainsail often, and in heavy weather it might be OK to use just the jib and the mizzen. What do you think? But it might be possible to put in two reefs in the main, and then get this sheet as well down to outside if the door. That will be the red line on the drawing. So, in heavy weather I will have the following sails: No genoa, this will be completely furled in. - Then a self tacking jib, this is the yellow sail. - Two reefs in the main, that is the red sail - One reef in the mizzen, that i the purple sail If all the sheets of these sails can be operated from just outside the door, and I also can adjust the area of the jib from that same position, then I would not need to leave the pilot house. What do you think about this solution? Do you think it will work? Do you think it will be worth the money? Have you seen someone rig the sails in this way before? I would love to read your comments, and to get inspiration on how to proceed on this project. Thanks a lot in advance! Yeah, and one more thing. I am also thinking about a wind vane for self steering, but that will be a later project. Did you like this? Please subscribe to get more content about Nauticat and sailing. It starts with shoveling snow… and a view that reminds us exactly where we are. Welcome to a day in our life in Port Protection, Alaska. After leaving the shipyard in Wrangell, we headed west and landed in one of the most remote communities in Southeast Alaska. What started as a quick stop turned into something more… new people, unexpected projects, and the kind of days that don’t follow a plan. This is what life looks like for us living self-reliant, four seasons aboard a sailboat in Alaska. Low tide beaches that go completely dry. Paddleboarding home because home floats. Hauling concrete, working on a remote foundation repair, and navigating weather that can’t decide between snow and sun. Some days are smooth. Most aren’t. But this is the rhythm of life out here. Guide to Port Entry is a vital nautical publication used by navigators and ship operators to support safe and efficient port approaches. In this video, we examine how to properly use the Guide to Port Entry as part of the passage planning process, focusing on ports, approaches, pilotage, and port-specific operational information. This tutorial explains how to interpret both the text volumes and plans volumes of the Guide to Port Entry and how they complement nautical charts, Ocean Passages for the World (NP 136), ENCs, and other Admiralty publications. Using practical examples, including Port Said, Egypt, the video demonstrates how to extract key information such as geographical positions, traffic flow, pilot boarding grounds, anchorages, and approach procedures, and how to apply this information to refine an initial route into a more detailed passage plan. This video is intended for deck officers, cadets, and maritime students who want to strengthen their understanding of port information, pilotage requirements, and safe port entry planning in accordance with good seamanship and passage planning principles. #passageplanning #voyageplanning #routeingchart #seamanship #maritime #seafarer #seaman #bsmt #maritimestudents #ecdis https://youtu.be/Pmxkac8hyTs https://youtu.be/Yj3zcLi88HY
After regrouping in Lerwick following the storm, the Dazcat Hissy Fit begins the chase with the class 40 Caribeira that continues all the way back to Plymouth. Hissy Fit sets off from Lerwick into 40mph winds but this leg has it all, from gales to becalmed as well as some of that shoreside chat we've all missed lately. And why is it 'The lost leg'? This little SD card never made it home with the others when the rest of the series was being put together. We found it in a locker over a year later! Much has been happening since then so it's taken this long to get the edit done.
