We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. Ihre einzigen Begleiter in der atemberaubenden Natur Grönlands und Nordkanadas sind Orcas, Delfine und Eisbären. Up to this point, we’ve focused on planning and interpretation. But once you’re actually offshore, your job as Captain changes. It moves from "making a plan" to monitoring the outside world and catching problems before they start. In this fourth video of our 5-part series, we’re looking at the tools that give you a bird's-eye view of your surroundings—even when you’re hundreds of miles from the nearest coast. We dive deep into Satellite AIS (Over the Horizon AIS), explaining how individual sailors now have access to global shipping data that used to be locked behind corporate paywalls. This isn't just about collision avoidance; it’s about strategic awareness and replacing surprise with a plan. 📘 GET THE BOOK & SAVE $100 This entire masterclass is a companion to my book "Be The Captain." Every reader gets a 20% discount on PredictWind Standard or Pro subscriptions, which can save you up to $100. 👉 Grab your copy and the discount here: https://bethecaptain.com/ ⚓️ WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN VIDEO #4: We are moving from weather models into real-time safety and awareness tools. This session covers: Awareness vs. Automation: Why tools like AIS don’t make you safe, but they do buy you the most precious resource offshore: Time. Satellite AIS (Over the Horizon): How PredictWind uses low-earth orbit satellites to show you ship traffic 300+ miles away, long before your onboard VHF antenna can see them. Strategic Planning: Using AIS to anticipate major shipping lanes days in advance so you can adjust your crossing for daylight. Bandwidth Management: How the offshore app filters global data into a "slice" that won't overwhelm your satellite connection. Proactive Alerts: Setting thresholds for wind, waves, and extreme weather before you’re too tired to think clearly. Community Knowledge: How to use experience sharing for anchoring and local quirks without treating it as "official authority." 📽️ THE PREDICTWIND MASTERCLASS SERIES Video 1: The Foundation & Setup Video 2: Weather Routing & Interpretation Video 3: Power Routing for Comfort Video 4: Safety, AIS & Extra Features (You are here) Video 5: The Offshore App & Starlink Integration Video Chapters 00:00 Planning vs. Real-Time Safety Tools 00:41 The Captain's Real Job: Awareness vs. Automation 01:02 What is AIS? Was stresst Dich beim Ankern am meisten? Viel Spaß mit unserem neuen Video!

This week in Newfoundland, Steve and Carter finish their Baker’s Brook Pond recon with one more attempt to cross the ice and reach the big climbing terrain they came to scout. After backing off the previous day due to warming temperatures, they return with colder conditions, a better plan, and a clear strategy for managing the risks of crossing a frozen pond in the backcountry. They test ice thickness, spread out their weight on skis, rig ropes and backup systems, and work through the real decision-making that goes into moving safely across uncertain terrain. After exploring the far side of the fjord and confirming what’s worth coming back for, they return to Arabella to find a few new winter problems waiting at the dock. Back aboard the boat, Steve tracks down an electrical short that knocked out the bubbler, then tackles another liveaboard winter issue: Akiva’s dog hair clogging the electric heaters. From frozen ponds and backcountry route finding to troubleshooting life aboard in a Newfoundland winter, this episode is all about solving problems as they come. -------------------------- Episode #380 Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! The traditional Invitation Race got the JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff World Championship 2026, presented by The Winning Group, under way in a 8-10 knot SE breeze on Sydney Harbour today and produced an absorbing contest which wasn’t decided until the final one hundred metres of the long South-East course. At the finish, it was the Australian champion Balmain team of Henry Larkings, Tom Grimes and Lachlan Pryor who won the day narrowly from a ‘gutsy’ Smeg team of Ash Rooklyn, Josh Porebski and Niall Morrow, which had led for almost the entire race. Defending champion Yandoo (John Winning Jr, Fang Warren and Lewis Brake) finished in third place, ahead of Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Keagan York), Vaikobi (Kirk Mitchell) and Brisbane’s GC Sails (Scott Cunningham). The battle between Balmain and Smeg was a brilliant way to start the carnival as the pair raced the entire course in the top two positions with the margin between them at just two rounding marks extending beyond 20 secs. A majority of the fleet went to the RHS of Shark Island on the beat from the start in Taylors Bay to the weather mark in Rose Bay where Balmain led narrowly from Smeg, Queensland’s Big Foot Bags & Covers (Dave Hayter), Shaw and Partners Financial Services NZ (Eli Liefting), Shaw and Partners (Aust), Yandoo, Lazarus Capital Partners (Tom Cunich), Club Marine (Emma Rankin), Vaikobi and GC Sails. In a spectacular spinnaker run across the harbour to Robertson Point the two leaders extended their break over the rest of the fleet as Smeg rounded the mark just 8s ahead of Balmain. Shaw and Partners (Aust) was 50s back in third place ahead of Yandoo and Shaw and Partners (NZ). GC Sails was next with Vaikobi, Sixt (Jacob Marks) and Fisher & Paykel (Brett Van Munster) close behind. A match race developed between the two leaders on the beat to Clark Island where Smeg led by 20s as spinnakers were set for the spinnaker run to Chowder Bay. Balmain was 55s ahead of Shaw and Partners (Aust) with Yandoo 1m35s from the lead in fourth place. The margins between the first three boats was unchanged at Chowder but it was the beat across to Rose Bay where Smeg’s crew produced some brilliant sailing to increase the leading margin to 40s. On the following spinnaker run to Taylors Bay, Balmain and Yandoo both gained significant time on the leader and the race was back on with only 8s separating Smeg and Balmain as they headed back across the harbour to Rose Bay. Balmain took advantage of a slightly slower mark rounding by Smeg and crossed to grab a narrow lead but Smeg returned the favour on the next cross and took it back. Smeg then extendd the margin and once again Smeg’s lead got back out to 32. Balmain's downwind boat speed has been outstanding all season, particularly in lighter winds, and she reduced the margin back to just 3-4 boat lengths at Robertson Point as the pair headed for home near Clark Island. Smeg went to the right and Balmain to the left; when they came together near Clark Island Balmain had regained the lead once more and crossed the finish line with the narrow winning margin and plenty of confidence for the championship regatta, which begins tomorrow. The championship is expected to be one of the most closely contested JJs for several years. If today’s racing is any indication, we are in for a tremendous series which may come down to an overall decision as close as today’s race. In this Sailing Helios episode, we cast off from Denia as thunderstorms rumble along the coast – not ideal sailing weather! We push on and find excellent shelter from the forecast strong winds tucked beside the dramatic Penyal d'Ifac (Peñón de Ifach), the iconic limestone rock in Calpe that towers 332 meters (over 1,000 feet) – as tall as the Empire State Building and dominating the Costa Blanca skyline. After waiting out the bad weather for a day (and enjoying the stunning views), we set sail south toward Alicante with the wind, waves, and current all pushing us along – finally some proper sailing! It's exhilarating to harness the breeze after the calm, but we're excited to arrive in Alicante for a few days of exploring the city and its sights. Stay tuned for the next episode, where we dive into Alicante adventures!
