The first of American Magic's two AC75's is officially named DEFIANT in front of friends and family during a ceremony at the team's base of operation in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.

A gennaker is used when sailing downwind as it's a cross between a genoa and a spinnaker (big colored sails). A gennaker is not symmetric like a spinnaker but is asymmetric like a genoa, but the gennaker is not attached to the forestay like a jib or genoa. The gennaker is rigged like a spinnaker but the tack is fastened to the hull. In this video, I demonstrate how we raise, fly, and lower the gennaker on our 56' Oyster sailboat. We are back! It’s been a few months but we have finally gotten back to scrubbing through footage and hope to be posting a lot more in he near future. This episode shows some of our passage from Marina Papagayo in norther Costa Rica to Acapulco Mexico. This was our second longest passage on the trip from Florida to Mexico at a little over 900 nautical miles. Nels (who helped bring the boat to Panama from Florida) returned to crew with his girlfriend Patty. We didn’t experience any of the notorious sustained offshore winds across the Gulf of Tehuantepec, but we did get hit by some squalls with gusts over 30 knots an at one point our mainsail ripped at a seam near the top and we had to pull the sail down for the duration of the passage. We didn’t get any footage of the actual event because we were too busy dealing with dousing the sail in pouring rain and high winds. We crossed through some really productive fishing grounds and caught Dorado and a big Sailfish (which we will show in another episode) In Acapulco, we managed to find someone to repair the sail and had an interesting experience taking on fuel. ______________________________________________________________________________________ This Video Is Made Possible By Our Amazing Fans! In this episode, I had a good day, no, in fact I had a great day!! We installed a new water pump, we caught up with our provisioning, we finally got our hard drives back! and we were fortunate enough to speak at a workshop hosted by the famous John and Tadji Kretschmer - the workshop was titled sailing to, from and within the Caribbean. This was our first ever attempt at a public speaking engagement and suffice to say Khiara and I were quite nervous. fortunately for us after a little dutch courage, what was supposed to be a 30 minute talk turned into a 2 hour story with a Q&A to top it off. On fait déplacer les pattes qui tiennent le voilier pour peindre en-dessous, on retire le vieux nom ''Necessity'' collé sur la poupe du bateau et on vous montre enfin le résultat du nom ''Petit Chantier'' sur la coque. De plus, on refait nos petites mascottes dans les cockpit! Finalement, on reçoit enfin notre safran en inox qui nous a été offert de bon cœur par une compagnie d'usinage québécoise (SK Usinage) et on l'installe sur le Skeg! Un GROS MERCI à SK Usinage et à Steve Blais qui nous ont offert ce magnifique safran dans un délai extrêmement rapide et qui ont fait un travail méticuleux. Swing keels are the most versatile keels available, but it comes at a cost. Let's discuss those costs. I'll also show you two technical diagrams to explain the mechanism of both lifting keel designs, the swing keel and the centerboard (centreboard in the UK). The main difference between the swing keel and centerboard is whether it's a weighted keel or not. The centerboard is unweighted and not as good at reducing heel.
