Captain David Bill: A Lifelong Sailor's Journey to Ocean Conservation and Regenerative Fisheries Captain David Bill is a lifelong sailor, ocean advocate, and former marine educator who has dedicated his life to protecting our oceans through sustainable practices and community-based conservation. With 29 years teaching at Tabor Academy in Massachusetts and 10 years in the Merchant Marines, Captain Bill brings decades of maritime experience to the conversation on ocean sustainability. Early Connection to the Sea: Captain Bill's love for the ocean began in childhood, spending summers at the beach in Connecticut with his small rowing skiff, Moby Dink. From crabbing and fishing to his first business selling bait crabs for 2 cents apiece, the water has been central to his life. Today, he lives aboard his sailboat Dream, having sailed from Massachusetts to the Bahamas after retiring from teaching. Understanding Regenerative Fisheries: Through his work as a merchant mariner, Captain Bill witnessed harmful industrial practices like butterworthing—cleaning oil tanks with saltwater and dumping the contaminated water overboard. These experiences sparked his interest in regenerative ocean practices: using ocean resources while changing our methods to ensure their perpetuation for future generations. The Scale of Ocean Problems: Captain Bill acknowledges feeling overwhelmed by the magnitude of ocean challenges—pollution, dead zones, coral reef die-off, and plastic waste. With a growing global population requiring food, clean air, and water, the problems seem insurmountable. However, he emphasizes that this is not an excuse for inaction. Each person can make a difference, even when facing overwhelming environmental challenges. The Tabor Academy Oyster Farm: A Model for Success: As a concrete example of regenerative practices, Captain Bill established the Tabor Academy Oyster Farm in partnership with the town of Marion, Massachusetts. This community-based project allowed high school students to propagate Eastern oysters in their natural waters, learning how food is grown while supporting local commercial fishermen and contributing to sustainable fishing practices. The oyster farm demonstrated that grassroots environmental projects can succeed when communities work together. Local Solutions Over Large-Scale Operations: Captain Bill believes the most successful sustainable practices happen at the community level. While large-scale operations are possible, they often lose focus on core values due to management complications and reduced individual investment. Communities connected to local projects feel empowered to create positive change for future generations. Consumer Responsibility and Local Food Systems: Addressing consumer impact, Captain Bill advocates for supporting local food systems rather than relying on products shipped across oceans using massive natural resources. Containerization and global cargo shipping deplete shared resources. By creating and consuming local food, communities can thrive without depending on resource-intensive global supply chains. The Romance of Sailing: Captain Bill reflects on why sailing captivates us—appearing in doctor's offices, workplaces, clothing, and language itself. He believes we're all connected to water's serenity and mystery. Sailing harnesses God-given gifts of wind and water, allowing natural, fossil-fuel-free transportation to anywhere on Earth. It represents our last frontier—an adventurous, voyaging spirit that offers the possibility of being somewhere beyond where we are now. Key Lessons for Ocean Conservation: The most important lesson from Captain Bill's experience: when starting something you believe is important, don't be discouraged by those who say "why bother" or "that's too much work." You don't need a science degree to make a difference. Start with simple efforts—people will see your vision and want to participate. This grassroots approach applies to all conservation work and life itself.

In this episode of our liveaboard sailing around the world series, we anchor at the famous Sandhills of Moreton Island and spend the day exploring one of the most beautiful island destinations in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia. Moreton Island is a must-visit location for sailors, cruisers, and liveaboard boaters, known for its crystal-clear water, white sand beaches, and protected anchorages. After sailing across Moreton Bay, we carefully choose our anchorage and settle into the calm conditions behind the sandhills. Anchoring a sailboat in places like this is a huge part of the liveaboard sailing lifestyle, and it’s moments like these that make travelling the world by sailboat so special. With the boat secure, we head ashore to explore the beach, walking along the shoreline and taking in the natural beauty that makes Moreton Island such a popular cruising stop. This video is a real look at life at anchor, showing what it’s like to live on a sailboat and explore remote islands by boat. If you’re a beginner sailor, new boat owner, or someone researching sailing destinations in Australia, this episode offers inspiration and insight into everyday cruising life. From anchoring out, beach exploring, and enjoying the freedom of sailing, this is authentic liveaboard sailboat life. As the day comes to an end, we return onboard to experience a peaceful sunset at anchor. Watching the sky change colours over Moreton Island while the anchor lights come on across the bay is one of the most magical parts of living aboard a sailboat. These quiet evenings are a reminder of why so many people dream of sailing full time, off-grid boat living, and long-term cruising. If you enjoy sailing vlogs, liveaboard sailing Australia, anchoring at islands, sailboat cruising, and exploring islands by boat, this video is for you. We have filmed our journey from looking for boats, buying the boat and downsizing our house so we can liveaboard and all the messy wonderful life stuff in between. Join us now as we start to get our boat prepared for liveaboard life. As new sailors we want to share all of our learnings and keep it real in our videos. We want to show step by step what it takes to choose a boat, buy the boat and learn how to sail. Our sailing learning curve is steep so come along with us as we learn and grow as liveaboard sailors. This is a real point-of-view sailing passage from Malaysia to Thailand, filmed entirely from onboard as we sail with six people on a 39-foot sailboat. This new year started fast — Jesse’s whole family flew out to join us, and suddenly our quiet boat turned into a full house. With limited stops ahead, we had to provision enough food for weeks, make sure the watermaker was running properly, and prepare for a challenging sail north. The wind has been strong, and there were a few scary moments when the boat rounded up. We reefed the sails to keep everyone comfortable, lowered the heel, and took things slow and steady. Out of six people onboard, only two got seasick — not bad considering the conditions. This video is pure POV sailing — no narration, no filters. Just real movement, real sounds, and real life at sea as we cross borders by boat. Put on headphones, relax, and feel like you’re sailing onboard with us. 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. **** FIXED AUDIO AND VIDEO ******* Not sure why but YouTube corrupted our last video upload. This is the same video re-encoded fixing the playback. ************************************** One lightning strike left us with no power, no engines, and 820 miles to get back for repairs. After being struck by lightning while anchored at the remote island of Pulau Panjang in Indonesia, everything changed in an instant. With no electrical systems, no engines, no pumps, no cooking, and no refrigeration, we were forced to manually lift the anchor and begin an 820-nautical-mile journey back to Phuket. Sailing when the weather allowed, we hand-steered day and night through storms, strong currents, and sheer exhaustion. Near the end of the journey, we were towed across the Malacca Strait before finally reaching Port Dickson—our first chance to get No Regrets II running again. This is Part 1 of our journey. In Part 2, failed engine repairs, a narrowly dodged cyclone that destroyed Admiral Marina in Port Dickson, electrical system checks in Penang, and finally a haul-out in Phuket as we face the full extent of the damage. WHO ARE WE? Hey there! We’re Chris and Jo, an ordinary Aussie couple living our extraordinary dream aboard our Seawind 1260 since January 2019 and now we continue from 2024 aboard our new 1370! Our adventure began with an unforgettable journey down the east coast of Australia, followed by a sail to the stunning New Caledonia. In 2020, we continued our exploration further north, and by 2021 and 2022, we circumnavigated Australia, discovering breathtaking locations along the way. Having previously owned fishing and water-skiing boats, our passion for sailing deepened after crewing in South Australia, leading us to make the leap into full-time living at sea. We hope to inspire you, just as we were inspired by other YouTube channels, to chase your dreams and explore the wonders of this beautiful world. Sometimes you just need a breather. We paused at Black Point for a Practical Sailor interview, then pushed on to Big Farmers to tackle overdue cleaning and soak up some peace. In this episode of Sailing Dark Angel we beat our way down toward Big Farmers Cay, with a stop in Black Point where Tim from Practical Sailor sat us down to talk about the lightning strike, life in the Bahamas, and this whole crazy journey. Once we made it south it was back to cleaning and repairs, and I slipped in for a dive with a stand-offish stingray before settling into the beauty around us.
