It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. We leave the island of Tanna and have a quick sail across to the Island of Erromango, stopping at Dillons Bay (Williams Bay). We are met by David and he kindly shows us around the village and a beautiful swimming hole. Heading back up river we visit the rock where the missionary John Willams body was taken to be divided among local chiefs to be cooked and ritually eaten. With David as our guide, we dive in crystal clear water and have a lovely traditional dinner with our hosts. On our way to Porto Santo our engine broke down in the middle of the night. We had to anchor under sail in a bay that lies underneath the cliffs of Porto Santo; with wind funnelling through the mountains that was kind of a struggle. Luckily we were helped by fellow sailors that gathered in their dinghies. After a day of rest and a bit of sightseeing we dive into our engine problem. In one of our books an almost too simple solution is described. We try it, of course, but it almost seems to good to be true. Will it work?? We get a visit from an old friend and explore the island (and its food & drinks!). After almost two weeks we head sail to Madeira: a completely different island. Opposite to the dry Porto Santo, Madeira is very green. We go high up in the mountains to get a taste of autumn. We follow the running water in the levada's and stretch our sea legs. But soon it's time to sail further South to Tenerife. Follow us along!

Hello folks! This week on our liveaboard sailing vlog we finally encounter the sights and sounds of spring! Birds chirping, flowers blooming, and the.. lovely thunk of Ben's head against the mast as he's forced to go up the mast mid-voyage? Is this a classic spring activity for anyone else? Just us? Well certainly the first sail of the season was bound to come with a few problems to work out! We've been nestled away in our little corner of the marina all winter long, sitting nicely while mussels and barnacles made their home on our hull. But unfortunately for them, as the weather turns gentle and the days get longer, we cannot sit idly. They've got to come off. We've got places to be! But the question is, which places? Thanks for hanging out with us while we decide which direction to go. And by 'decide', I mean... stew in our indecision. But at least we were accompanied by our dear friend @SailingAlanouwoly , who lives and travels aboard her own 28 foot sailboat! If you've been here all winter, we appreciate you sticking it out with us as we did a boat load (hahahaha) of boat maintenance. Nyepi is a Balinese "Day of Silence" that is commemorated every Isakawarsa (Saka new year) according to the Balinese calendar (in 2023, it felt on March 22). It is a Balinese celebration mainly celebrated in Bali, Indonesia. Most Hindu Balinese villages make Ogoh-ogoh, demonic statues made of richly painted bamboo, cloth, tinsel, and styrofoam symbolising negative elements or malevolent spirits or even characters from Hindu mythology. This video shows you the night parade. After the Ogoh-ogoh have been paraded around the village, they are burned in the cemeteries although many are displayed in front of community halls for another month or more.
