We head into this city which is far from a tourist destination and are greeted and followed by many curious kids. With our jobs done, it is back to sea we go on passage north towards the Banyak islands. On passage Bonita cleans out her closet and we are surprised to find the goodies in store! Not So Grotty Yachty anymore!! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra where we are living the island life and chasing the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we are returning to Thailand in the coming months and then taking the northern route of the Indian Ocean to the Andaman islands and onto Sri Lanka before heading south to Chagos and across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trades begin again! The adventure is just beginning! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! We spend three more days working to get it back to the one piece it was when it was originally moulded in Vietnam. The underside of the hull went surprisingly easy, but then we had to deal with keeping the upswing even across both sides as we bond it together with our thickened vinyl ester. Hauled out primarily to remove antifoul that was too expensive to do in USA. Also change fridge keel cooling system from Isotherm to Frigoboat; removed varnish and much much more. s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) is out the water again, to complete the works on the hull that could not be done in Herrington, MD, USA. These were the tasks: - Chemically stripped the antifoul back to the original barrier coat, applied InterProtect and antifoul. Managed to get back to the original waterline mark. Stripping by soda blast in the USA was too expensive plus the outside temperatures for re-painting were too low. - Install 3 new Frigoboat keel coolers, better suited to warm waters than our current Isotherm ones. Brazing of the pipes was needed. No one in the USA would do us that service. - Strip the Coelan “varnish” off the gunwale following the damage by the collision in New England. The intention was to re-varnish, but the constant random rain showers put us off. And debated long and hard whether to re-varnish in consideration of the necessary maintenance in these climates. Sadly, we ended up leaving it bare teak, …. for now. - Tried to have the vang serviced again, but he riggers did not have the parts. So we instead renewed the hydraulic oil in the entire system hoping that would fix the minor oil leak. - Installed a new cockpit light with a LED strip in the underside of the boom. - Put in new teak plugs to the coach roof handrails. - …plus a few other little bit and pieces. All with the usual amount of frustrations, and attention to detail, like we do! 11-23 Dec 2018

Completing Arabella's hull is something we are eagerly striving for. With this installment we cross a milestone in that goal. All of Arabella's frames that can currently go in, are finally installed. Once we have completed the planking process, the last seven sets of frames (currently blocked by the molds) will go in. Making these sawn frames was an interesting exercise in learning a new construction technique and Alix got the opportunity to tackle the process with these frames in the stern. While working on these, Steve and Ahmed worked on building a rack to store our cedar, which has up until now been taking up the majority of the space in our garage. With this lumber out of the garage we are able to put the Bridgeport and metal lathe to proper use. Although Magic Carpet was once destined for the scrapyard, she's now almost ready to be launched back onto the water. Aladino is a professional boatbuilder, so he has the skills and training necessary to pull off a restoration of this size. But it wasn't easy! It's taken almost four years, and a lot of hard work. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. Between sickness, more sickness, rain and visiting in-laws it was a bit rough. (joking about the MIL, she's great). As you know, the rudder was full of water, so Brett cut off the sides and dug out all the bad foam. It would never dry, despite using heat, fire, dehumidifiers, the sun and even just time. So out with the wet foam, in with the dry, slap on some silica epoxy to fill in any voids, layer on a ton of fiberglass to make it strong, barrier coat, antifouling and reinstall. No biggie! We get the new thru-hulls installed in preparation of installing our new B&G instruments, but those will wait safely in their boxes till we're ready. Again, we've been sick and stuck and we're itching to get moving again...who needs instruments anyways. We say bye to Mom, splash Eva and celebrate with a beard shave, a shower, and dinner. Le bielle sono realizzate con tecnologia Fracture Split. E’ conforme alle normative EPA Tier 3 e RCD 2. Questo diesel ha sorprendenti parametri tecnici: rapporto peso/potenza 1,31 Kg/cv, rapporto potenza/cilindrata 82 cv/litro e rapporto volume/potenza 1,45 dm3/cv. La coppia massima è di 1580 Nm a 1900 giri/minuto e il regime nominale motore è di 3.200 giri/minuto. Per rispondere alle più dure sollecitazioni provocate dalle alte velocità sull’acqua, il motore è dotato di un elemento di rinforzo del blocco detto “ladder frame”. Il nuovo motore Mercury Diesel è compatibile con l’intera gamma di comandi e dispositivi elettronici SmartCraft di Mercury, tra cui i sistemi Joystick Piloting per entrobordo e pod drive. Lo scafo è realizzato in Kevlar con la tecnologia “Structural Foam” brevettata da FB Design che lo rende inaffondabile. Gli “Stab”, cioè gli stabilizzatori penumatici laterali, controllano le sbandate e recuperano parte dell’energia dissipata sulle onde. Le sue misure ne permettono il facile trasporto in tutto il mondo all’interno di un container di 40’ grazie a una larghezza di 2 metri 33 cm con i tubolari sgonfi. She has a Kurt Hughes designed rotating carbon fiber wing mast and integral carbon fiber chainplates. The rig is already in place and supported by Dyneema standing rigging. All of her running rigging and supporting deck hardware is bedded in place. The interior has been fitted out with all cabinetry, custom upholstery, 2 queen cabins, a separate head and shower with beautiful fixtures and surfaces. Amilee's been plumbed and wired. Her systems are ready to go with twin helms, outboard hiking seats, hardtop bimini, 500 watts of solar, 2 generators, ground tackle, electric windlass, shore power, and charger. There is even a rough-in for a watermaker should you choose to add one. The outboards hang in their nacelles ready to propel her off the dock. The dinghy can be hoisted onto the stern. Unfortunately Trimaran Amilee has been poised in suspended animation since her launch in 2019. Owner health forces the sale. They will be adding sails in the near future, but when they do, the asking price will rise accordingly. Cruzamos el Mar Caribe en una travesía en la que recorreremos más de 1.000 millas a vela aún intoxicados de ciguatera. Chubascos, ballenas, delfines, viento fuerte, pesca y mucha aventura en nuestra gran aventura antes de llegar a Panamá. Dejamos las pequeñas Antillas después de recorrerlas durante dos meses de sur a norte tras nuestra llegada posteriormente de cruzar el Atlántico. Se ha hecho muy corto nuestro paso por estas islas del Caribe pero toca partir y poner la mirada en Panamá, nos espera otro paraíso al otro lado del Caribe. Nada más dejar las Islas Vírgenes Británicas para emprender un travesía en la que atravesaremos el Mar Caribe de punta a punta durante más de una semana vemos varios grupos de ballenas, sus soplidos y las colas gigantes nos muestran el camino hacia la nueva aventura. Los dos primeros días tendremos varios SQUALLS o chubascos que nos lo pondrán difícil, lluvia y mucho viento de un momento a otro. La luna llena nos acompañará en las guardias iluminando el Mar caribe estas primeras noches de travesía. La ciguatera, la toxina del pescado que comimos nada más llegar a Islas Vírgenes, nos ha dejado débiles y todavía se mantienen algunos síntomas. La exigencia de la travesía es grande, así que habrá que darlo todo. Las visitas de los delfines se convertirán en rutina junto grandes olas y fuerte viento que irán subiendo a medida que nos acerquemos al destino.
