With a project like this, there are always going to be ups and downs. The key is trying to stay up beat and finding a way around the road bumps. We've been greatly slowed down this summer by the work of figuring out the prop shaft assembly which has required a lot of machining which we needed help with. Now, we are back to the planking and we have run into another issue. The Resorcinol glue we had bought for the planking this summer turned out to have gone bad on us and now we are experiencing glue failures on planks we were hoping to get on the boat this week. It has been frustrating but it just means we need to move ahead with other tasks and just wait for some fresher glue and come up with a system to help them cure properly. We sat locked inside in floods, a lot. Soph broke her ankle and needed surgery which put us on hold, but as soon as we could, we were off again, making it to reef, islands and new coastline. Finally flying into the Whitsundays, like we were transported to a Canadian Tahiti crossed with the Bahamas, well for not having been to any of those places we can only imagine. It's our last day of uni break and we plan to make the most of it, we trek across the hill to Whitehaven Beach for a swim and then jump back on Nakama and potter around the islands looking for another swim. Hill Inlet just looked WAY too good...It's an emotional ending to not only our uni break but also the cruising season...we lap up the views of Hill Inlet and the crystal clear waters before heading back to probably our favourite anchorage in the Whitsundays....what a crazy year it has been. In the last episode, we started to work on getting ready to change the roof on the boathouse. After a visit from the local building inspector a little while ago, we were told that we needed to replace the plastic we have with a membrane that is at least fire retardant. So that's what we did as well as strengthened our structure a lot more as well. The last trusses were just straight from the walls to the peak and did not shed the snow very well. On top of that, the cable we had up wasn't very tight and sagged in the middle. So, we beefed up the entire thing with a new pole at the end of the boathouse and used 5/8th inch elevator cable for all the connections. This gave us a very strong and tight ridge line. With that up, we put up the bow shed trusses that we built in the house the other week. These bowed trusses will give us a much steeper angle for the roof and help shed the snow much better, as well as give us a lot more room! None of this was easy work and took about a week to pull off! The day has finally come for us to move out of our undersized (and now shredded) paint tent, and get our catamaran into the light of day. When we first arrived to Kentmorr Marina back in 2020, we told them we'd only need to be in the tent for 6-9 months, just enough to get all the important pieces on and close her up enough that she could move out an into the work yard. Well...not only did we have the issue of not being able to get our cabin top bonded together and even sitting in place until 2 years after the first pieces arrived....but it was just so comfortable in there that we didn't want to leave. The time has come though that project need to push forward, which can't be done inside the tent. It didn't allow us enough room to bond on the sterns or bows, and to be honest, I think we just needed that extra little push to get us focused on completion. Thanks to C&C Ventures, with their hydraulic lift, we were presented with an easy way to move this vessel, which is currently 38 ft (11.5m) long and 24.5 ft (7.5m) wide, out of our tent. And considering we only have inches to spare on each side, we needed something that could lift from underneath and come straight out. I still don't know how we lucked out with the marina manager being a part of a company which could do exactly that for us. With the tent cleared of junk, and the yard cleared of boats, we were able to make the move and be placed just next to our old spot, but now in the open air. Immediately she was set down at just about level, although we'll continue to check that over the next few weeks. Transiting the Cape Cod Canal is something that many New England sailors hold as an eventual "someday" thing when they first get started sailing. Sometimes the weather outside the Cape can be dicey. The Cape Cod Canal is an engineering marvel many years in the making, if you count all the preliminary surveys and even an earlier iteration of it many years ago. It's an exciting place, meaning that the current rips through, and the time to transit either north or south is dependent upon the tide. Boats without engines can't transit the canal. Despite my puffy eyes, groggy voice and lack of proper caffeine levels at any hour prior to 8am, the early mornings in the Marquesas are divine. The light has a magenta hue, the air smells of salty dew and the variety of fresh veg and fruit would impress even the most avid Pike Place Market lover. Oh, and the temperatures are perfection at dawn. It’s just the right amount of crisp coolness but not enough to have me reaching for a pair of long pants. Honestly, if the rest of French Polynesia is like this, they might turn this night owl into an early bird. Given all that, it’s not completely crazy for us to get going at the crack of dawn. Almost everyone we spoke to promised calm waters and lots of comfortable downwind sailing. It's not exactly the case but it's still a great sail to our first overnight stop near Nassau. We cross the Gulf Stream, snag a couple Mahi-Mahi and we barely use the engines. We're now on Mother Nature's schedule and so far she's been kind. I am always amazed by the cruisers community's help for eachother. I witness our neighbours boat dragging to the rocks in our anchorage in Curacao, and within a few minutes of radio chatting, several other cruisers came to the rescue and the boat was safely re-anchored. E questo non solo per passare gli esami con 30 e lode, ma per la vita. Oggi ci focalizziamo sull'ACTIVE RECALL, cioé sulla miglior tecnica in assoluto per ricordare quello che si studia. Since sailing down the coast, we have been looking forward to this stop off. The Percy group of islands are remote and alone, along way from the nearest main land town. Middle island has a very colourful history that we learnt all about from the current caretakers. The island has four permanent residents and rarely do they go to the mainland. Some of the stories they told were very interesting. One week before our arrival, a fellow yachtie had done himself a mischief and ran aground on the rocks. Losing everything. His sailing boat wreck is prominent in the distance from the anchorage. We go check it out and see what can happen when things go horribly wrong. Lots of sailing boats come and go during our visit. A popular destination with still so much seclusion. We loved this place so much we want to sail back there now!
