When Windy Boats and Hans Jorgen Johnsen joined forces with the world renowned yacht designer Ed Dubois the result was always going to be something really special. So the Dubois SR52 Blackbird was born....a breathtaking, stunning and quite exceptional 16.10 metre super tender that took the 2010 Cannes International Boat Show by storm. Developed at Windy Boats Hi Tec production facility at Vastervick, Sweden, the latest techniques in vacuum injection moulding were used to produce a significantly stronger yet lighter, fuel efficient, high performance hull. A triple Volvo IPS 600 was chosen with the mid engine located forward of the port and starboard units to improve the balance, smoothness of the drive train and to increase performance. With a top speed of 46 knots and cruising speed of 40 knots the SR52 Blackbird delivers a range of 450-480 miles, delivering its passengers ashore in uprecedented style, speed and comfort. Both helmsman and passengers will love the onboard experience. The skipper will be excited by the exceptional dash, location and quality of instruments, controls, helm and, in particular, directional stability of the ultra soft level riding hull. He or she and their passengers will feel secure in the three separate racing chairs at the helm and the three standing sports chairs, all under the shade of the striking matching black bimini. The 4.5 metre beam means there's plenty of space for additional seating, a sunlounger and a hydraulic bathing ladder. The walk round teak deck also features a raised foredeck and additional seating. When the advanced anchor system, which is cleverly hidden from sight when not in use, is employed at that special bay, the SR52 quickly transforms into the perfect lunching, sunbathing, diving or swimming platform. As a new generation Super Tender, the SR52 Blackbird is designed to follow it's much larger mother ship in safety and comfort so below decks a double berth and sepeate show and heads are installed. The Dubois SR52 Blackbird is guaranteed to turn heads wherever she goes and is surely one of the most exciting launches of the decade.

But Groupe Beneteau has done them both one better in our opinion and produced what could be a new trend in mid-size cruising powerboats. This three-stateroom, two-head cruiser with flying bridge is powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS500s and has details and amenities intended to appeal to veteran boaters looking to move both up and down. We inspected her in January 2013 at her debut in Dusseldorf, Germany and came back with lots of pictures and some first impressions.

It’s our FIRST OVERNIGHT PASSAGE! We set sail across Lake Michigan, leaving in the middle of the night to ride the fading winds of a storm. Kirk’s dad arrives just before midnight to join us for the trip. The sail starts out with 15+ knts on the nose, and 5’ waves which drop to a couple feet by the next afternoon. We fly our spinnaker for the first time ever. Lauren struggles with seasickness while Kirk and his dad have a ball sailing. Gunboat vs Outremer - who will win!?!? It's not a fair fight. The Gunboat is 66 feet, has 12 foot daggerboards, a much higher mast, larger sail area and carbon fiber reinforced. The Outremer is 51 feet, has 3 foot daggerboards and is made of fiberglass. Let's not even mention the price difference. But now that Gunboat and Outremer are made by the same company in France (Grand Large), it's worth discussing how similar they truly are. Both are designed with performance as THE priority. Comfort is a close second. Price is clearly less of a concern for Gunboat. Both have very narrow hulls, utilize daggerboards to actually sail upwind and choose a larger sail area over a bridge-deck helm seat. Their bows are both extended, moving the center of gravity back and limit bow displacement that would slow the boats down. The only real difference is how much you are willing to pay for exotic weight saving materials and the stiffness associated with Fiberglass (Gunboat!). So who won? The Gunboat, silly. Of course it won. And it wasn't really a race, anyway. But still, it was a lot of fun trying to hold the Gunboat off. And I thought you all might enjoy seeing it...
