This book is the chronicle of W.A. Robinson setting off on his 32 footer 'Svaap' from Panama, then taking two years to circumnavigate the world, during the interwar years.  It is a wonderfully written and diligent account, by a sailor who, although initially advertising himself as 'not a writer', goes on to produce the most wonderfully vivid and heartfelt story, that even now, a hundred years later, still stirs the soul to adventures beyond the West horizon. We call Unit 2 in the new Harken integrated ILCA kicker/boom vang system “The Twiddle”. It’s the component that lives moving up and down in the middle of the purchase system. Until now, every 12:1 or 15:1 ILCA vang system ever designed has employed a traditional double block right there. Those sheaves manage different loads and spin at very different rates. So every conventional double block tips over, the line becomes unaligned and chafes the sides. The Twiddle is a fiddle block with a designed-in 45 degree twist. The Twiddle stays aligned and erases that chafe. This has not taken very long: sailors in other Classes are grasping the Twiddle’s potential to vanquish friction and improve responsiveness in purchase systems. Good on ‘em! The Twiddle was certainly designed for the ILCA but there is no reason you can’t put one to work in halyard tension or on the cunningham or anywhere else you figure they’ll work better. Step aboard WINDHORSE, a 2003 Hylas 49 designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by Queen Long Marine. Long regarded as one of the most sought-after Hylas designs, the Hylas 49 blends serious offshore capability, graceful center cockpit styling, and a spacious three-cabin interior that has made the model a favorite among bluewater cruising sailors. WINDHORSE is being offered for the first time on the brokerage market and has seen remarkably light use. Her original owner kept her in the Caribbean, typically using her only three months per year, with a ten-year period during which she remained covered and unused. Following that layup, she was fully serviced and has continued to be lightly enjoyed on a seasonal basis. Her condition is immediately evident aboard, especially in the interior teakwork, teak and holly sole, blue Ultrasuede upholstery, custom inlaid dining table, and traditional Hylas joinery. She offers the preferred three-cabin layout with a spacious aft master suite, VIP forward cabin, third cabin with over/under berths, two heads, passageway galley, forward-facing navigation station, and excellent storage throughout. Building a wooden sailboat mast, boom, or yard? Here’s how to lay out a proper elliptical spar taper — the traditional shape used on real wooden boats. In this video, Mark from Nomad Boat Building walks you step-by-step through the simple layout method used to create an elliptical taper on wooden spars. Whether your boat plans give you full dimensions or just major and minor diameters, this technique lets you accurately draw and cut a fair, traditional taper using basic tools and a scrap of wood. After multiple failed attempts last season, we finally get our weather window and set sail for Lady Elliot Island – a destination that’s been just out of reach for far too long. Departing from Rooney Point, we take on the 51-nautical-mile passage with high hopes… but the wind doesn’t exactly cooperate. What should’ve been a clean sail turns into a bit of a test of patience as we motor-sail our way north. But getting there was only part of it. Once we arrived, we made a call that went against what the sailing apps were telling us – choosing to moor on the northern buoy based on local advice from a dive skipper. Time will tell if that was the right move… With ARGO secured (for now), we celebrate finally making it here the only way that made sense – an 80s disco party onboard. But beneath the surface, there’s more waiting. We’ve heard this place is teeming with life – turtles, manta rays, and more – and tomorrow, we’re getting in the water to see it for ourselves. This is Part 1 of our Lady Elliot Island adventure – the journey, the decision, and the anticipation. In Part 2, we dive in – swimming with turtles, gliding alongside manta rays, and finally experiencing what makes Lady Elliot Island so special. Stick around for that episode. Thanks for watching. We left one of my favourite anchorages (with the bluest water) as storm on the way & into the safe holding of Preveza to enjoy the lightning show. The following evening we go to a local sardine festival, only to find our dinghy fuel has been pinched while we were away. Shane has an accident in the stinky waters here, while Amy & Oliver have a good belly laugh at his expense. We head more inland to a little town called Vonitsa with our friends Melusina where we go for a wander amongst the gum trees and have a few quiet days. Back to Preveza, water pump work and one more storm, ready to move on to enjoy our final month of Season One. Want early access to our videos? The recent signing of the AC38 protocol created a flurry of news stories and speculation as to how the next Cup would play out. And while the governance of the Cup is a big deal, the news that followed has been more of a drip feed than the start of a new chapter for the 175 year old trophy. But don't be fooled, the 38th Cup is a big deal, not least of all because the runway is now pretty short with teams moving into completely new territory when it comes to how this Cup will be run. The first event is in just a few months time with the Cup Match itself taking place next year. The closing date for entries is the end of January 2026 and yet there's still talk of more teams taking part and the Kiwis are about to get their AC75 back on the water. The fact is we're underway already, so what's going on? In our latest update Matt Sheahan pulls together the various news stories, inside chatter and gossip to put together his personal analysis of what's going on to explain what state the Cup is in and where we should be looking. We also hear from the chief architect of the AC75 Emirates Team New Zealand's Dan Bernasconi about how this generation of AC75s will differ from the previous machines. Plus, if you thought that talk of a collaboration among Cup teams with the ACP sounded familiar, we've dug out some great clips from 2017 where some of the key players in the sport talk about the biggest change for the Cup......If nothing else it should produce a wry smile or two!
