Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. EPISODE 337 Seven years. Over 30,000 nautical miles. We've sailed to some incredible places, and Fiji is definitely one of them. Our days have a rhythm: sail, anchor, explore, maintain the boat, edit. The flow is pretty much the same. But somehow, every single day out here is different. This week started peacefully—sailing north through Fiji's Yasawa Islands, fishing, watching thousands of flying foxes fill the sky at sunset. Then the weather turned. A cyclone had formed about 300 kilometers south of Fiji's main island, Viti Levu. We weren't in its direct path, but we were experiencing the outer bands—heavy rain and wind feeding the storm south of us. The forecast had been tracking it for days, and we positioned ourselves in a protected bay, anchored for the predicted wind direction. Except we got it wrong. The wind wasn't coming from the North like predicted—it was hitting us from the west. And that put us dangerously close to shore with not enough room if our anchor dragged. For hours, the wind kept building instead of calming. The longer we stayed, the more uncomfortable we felt. We had to make the call: pull anchor and reposition in the middle of heavy weather. This episode shows both sides of cruising during cyclone season—the peaceful rhythm and the intense moments when the forecast doesn't cooperate and you have to adapt fast. This is why we're one of the few boats still out here right now. You have to be prepared, stay alert, and trust your instincts even when the models say something different. After seven years of this life, we've learned to expect the unexpected. The rhythm stays the same, but the days never do. ⚠️ CYCLONE SEASON SAILING: We're sailing Fiji during cyclone season (November-April) when most cruisers have left. We stay vigilant, watch forecasts closely, position ourselves in protected bays, and are always ready to move if conditions change. Luke Fallon, Captain Kekoa Sports Fishing, & PG, Director Gineico Marine, discuss the X30 Quick Gyro Stabiliser fitted to Luke's magnificent O’Brien 56 - the Kekoa. Following is a summary of the interview. Q1: Luke, tell us a little bit about why you chose the Quick Gyro? A1: We went with a Quick Gyro mainly because it was an aftermarket install and space was an issue! Luckily enough the Quick Gyro fit right in the space that we had, so that was one big plus for us, in-between engines in the engine room. The simpleness of the operation is another contributing factor; but also the fact that it's air-cooled and not water-cooled is a huge part for us......... Q2: Does Quick Gyro really work in all conditions? A2: Well, essentially it stops to go from rocking, and that's the noticeable difference. There’s a tremendous amount of difference when it’s on vs when it’s off. Essentially, it’s killing the rock of the boat. You do feel a bit of a sensation of the Gyro moving at the extremities when it stops, of course it has to do that, but underway, it’s fantastic; trolling - it's a big difference. But also put the Quick Gyro on for anchoring at night-time. Most of our trips are live onboard trips out on the reef, and we're anchored behind the reef at night, so it's subject to tides and weather. If you get strong winds and big tides, it can still be pretty rollie behind the reef. Q3: Does Quick Gyro perform when underway? A3: When I first got it, we mostly just used to turn it on when we got out fishing and started trolling, or turn it on at night-time on the reef when the boat started rocking. But now I pretty much turn it on before I leave the dock, particularly if it's going to be a little bit rough, because it performs so well while the boat's underway. So this cruises between 25 to 27 knots and I say down sea, beam on sea, you know at that speed it's hard to believe that it does work and it is so efficient........ you're tracking is so much straighter and I believe the boat runs so much nicer with it. Q4: Is the Quick Gyro noisy at night? A4: Pretty much you can just turn the gyro on at the start of your trip and you turn it off at the end of the trip. It looks after the changing conditions anyway. So if it's calmer, it doesn't work as hard as if it's rough or it is compensating for that. But at nighttime, we leave it on at nighttime, particularly in those rough conditions and because it's mounted in between the engines in the engine room it's pretty well sound insulated and it's very quiet. Just makes you sleep nice at night, everybody wakes up in the morning not in the middle of the night - no one rolls out of bed when the tide changes 😊 Q5: Why is Quick Gyro standby mode important? A5: It's a deal breaker - it's an important safety feature. For our application being a Marlin fishing boat, generally it's on when it's rough, and it's important because the key to the gyro is it stops the boat from rocking…which is great when you're going forward but it works against you when you're reversing backwards, when we're chasing marlin. When it's rough and we're reversing generally into the sea; the boat doesn't naturally want to roll so the water comes in over the transom and across the corner like it wouldn't if the boat was with it turned off, the butt would roll and go over the waves. But because we're going backwards now it goes basically straight down and through the waves. So when we hook up and we're fighting a fish, it's important to me to be able to turn it off and put it on standby mode so the boat rocks naturally, so we keep the water out of the cockpit, continue fighting the fish as long as you like, & the boat will handle its way as though it didn’t have a gyro on it - important without it we could potentially sink the boat.… it's not a gimmick. Q6: Why Quick Gyro network interface is crucial? A6: I'm driving at multi-stations. I'm operating the boat in the flight ridge, as well as up in the tower, & the main control of the gyro is obviously in the saloon where it's in a friendly environment out of the weather. But having it up here, I can still control the whole you know boat. # Come Prolungare la Vita del tuo Motore Fuoribordo Vuoi mantenere il tuo motore fuoribordo efficiente e allungarne la durata? Ecco cinque aspetti fondamentali a cui prestare attenzione per garantirne il massimo rendimento nel tempo. Scopri come evitare i problemi più comuni e proteggere il tuo investimento con pochi, ma essenziali accorgimenti. ## 1. Lavaggio Post-Utilizzo: Un Passaggio Fondamentale Se utilizzi il motore in mare, è indispensabile effettuare un lavaggio accurato dopo ogni utilizzo. La salsedine, accumulandosi nel sistema di raffreddamento e nei condotti di scarico, può cristallizzarsi e ostruire i passaggi vitali per il funzionamento del motore. Il procedimento corretto per rimuoverla prevede due metodi: - **Collegamento diretto**: se il motore dispone di un attacco specifico per l'acqua dolce, basta collegarlo a un tubo e far scorrere l’acqua con il motore spento. - **Utilizzo delle cuffie di lavaggio**: se il motore non ha un attacco dedicato, si possono applicare le cuffie sul piede del motore (nelle griglie d’aspirazione dell’acqua) e avviare il motore per far circolare l’acqua dolce nel sistema. ## 2. Tagliandi e Manutenzione: Olio e Filtri Sempre in Ordine Un motore fuoribordo è un motore a tutti gli effetti e, come tale, necessita di manutenzione regolare. Il tagliando non è un’opzione, ma un’operazione essenziale per garantirne il corretto funzionamento nel tempo. Anche se lo utilizzi poco, non significa che puoi trascurarlo. Cambiare olio e filtri periodicamente è fondamentale per prevenire usura e danni interni. ## 3. Protezione dalla Corrosione: Il Ruolo degli Anodi Sacrificali L’acqua salata e le correnti galvaniche possono corrodere il metallo del motore. Per evitarlo, esistono gli **anodi sacrificali**, realizzati in zinco o altri materiali, che attirano la corrosione e si consumano al posto delle parti metalliche del motore. Controllarli regolarmente e sostituirli quando sono troppo consumati è una pratica indispensabile per prevenire danni costosi. Se il motore deve rimanere in acqua per lunghi periodi, esistono soluzioni come i **sistemi di protezione con secchi morbidi** che permettono di mantenere il piede del motore isolato dall’acqua, riducendo gli effetti della corrosione e delle correnti galvaniche. ## 4. Qualità del Carburante: Attenzione a Cosa Immetti nel Serbatoio La benzina di scarsa qualità può compromettere gravemente il funzionamento del motore. Un carburante contaminato o sporco può causare problemi al minimo, difficoltà di avviamento e persino danni permanenti agli iniettori e al sistema di alimentazione. Assicurati di rifornirti sempre da distributori affidabili e di evitare carburanti di dubbia provenienza, anche se apparentemente più economici. ## 5. Invernaggio: Proteggere il Motore nei Periodi di Inutilizzo Durante l’inverno, il motore può rimanere fermo per settimane o mesi. Questa inattività può causare problemi come l’accumulo di ruggine nelle parti interne. Per evitarlo, è fondamentale effettuare un **corretto invernaggio**, che prevede: - L’utilizzo di prodotti specifici per lubrificare le parti interne e prevenire la formazione di ossidazioni. - Il riempimento del serbatoio per evitare la condensazione e l’ingresso di umidità. - Il controllo delle batterie e degli altri componenti per evitare guasti alla ripresa dell’attività. ## Conclusione Seguendo questi semplici ma fondamentali accorgimenti, potrai garantire al tuo motore fuoribordo una lunga vita operativa e un funzionamento sempre efficiente. En réalité, il le suit avec la plus grande attention, pour enrayer une éventuelle chute, en utilisant des lunettes spéciales , à miroirs. Ces lunettes lui évitent, d'avoir à lever la tête en permanence en supprimant tout risque de crampes à la nuque.

Sailing from Maine to New Hampshire we stopped at Isle of Shoals, approximately 6 miles off the coast. Miles of Maine Island Hiking, Rock scrambling and Shoreline exploring.

Isle of Shoals, consists of 16 islands, the largest being Appledore, Star, Smuttynose, Malaga, White, Seavey, Lunging and Duck.

The most intriguing part ? There was a true Crime Murder on Isle of Shoals Smuttynose Island back on March 6,1873. Two Norwegian immigrants were brutally murdered in cold blood. Maren Hontvet, her sister Karen, and their sister-in-law Anethe—settled into the only occupied home on the island, unaware that by dawn, two of them would be dead.

Shortly after 1 a.m., an intruder slipped inside. Karen was strangled in her bed, Anethe was butchered with an axe, and only Maren managed to escape, barefoot and terrified, into the icy darkness. She hid among the rocks until daylight, clinging to life as her family’s world collapsed. Anita Shreve wrote a 1997 book about the event and in 2000, the film “Weight of Water with Sean Penn, Catherine McCormack, Elizabeth Hurley, and Sarah Polley was released.
