La Mini Transat es una regata que cruza el Atlántico en solitario, sin asistencia ni comunicación con el exterior, con barcos de 6,5m muy avanzados tecnológicamente. Zarpamos 90 participantes desde Les Sables d’Olonne en Septiembre de 2025, pero es una aventura que ya inicié el año pasado, botando el barco que había acabado de construir y empezando mis rondas clasificatorias para tener las millas necesarias. Hacen falta un mínimo de 1500 millas en regatas de la clase Mini que sería como “aprobar selectividad”, pero como somos más opositores que plazas disponibles hay, desempatamos con quién tenga más millas recorridas en competición. Actualmente tengo 2300 millas, por lo que ya soy “apto” y espero que en noviembre, después de la Palma-Melilla-Palma, que organizamos aquí, pueda sumar 3300 millas. Siempre digo que lo más complicado de la Mini Transat no son los temporales, ni las calmas, sino es seguir las minuciosas reglas de la organización para estar en la línea de salida. Salir de Les Sables d’Olonne y ver todo lo que uno ya ha recorrido, ya es una pequeña victoria. Para mi, de las cosas más extraordinarias de la Mini Transat es lo duro que es hacer un proyecto de 360º tú solo. Con muchas ayudas pero con uno mismo al frente. Difiere mucho de regatas de grandes equipos que cada uno tiene su sueldo y se centra en su cometido. Aquí tenemos pesadillas con la financiación, con los bancos que nos acechan, pero al mismo tiempo estamos haciendo bricolaje y poniéndonos el traje de agua. Esta sería mi cuarta Mini Transat, después de las de 2005, donde fui el más joven hasta el año 2019, 2007 y 2009 y después de haber dado una vuelta al Mundo en doble en 2011-2012. Mi vida ha cambiado un poco desde entonces. Antes, aunque malvivía, me dedicaba en exclusiva a mis proyectos oceánicos, pero ahora, siendo capitán de maxiyates y vocal de vela sin ánimo de lucro, del Real Club Náutico de Palma, el club de mis amores, dispongo de una agenda más apretada. Lo soluciono pensando más, durmiendo menos, organizándome mejor, rodeándome de gente competente, pero sobretodo teniendo un equipazo tanto en el Open Season, con Andrea Fantini, aquí presente y que toma el mando cuando no estoy a bordo, como en el RCNP con una plantilla que funciona como un reloj. Estas sinergias me permiten una cierta libertad para echarle horas a la Mini Transat 2025. Porque para mi no existe la palabra vacaciones o rebajar mis expectativas, moriré joven, pero ahora no es el momento ni de descansar ni de tomarse las cosas con calma. Es un non stop 24h 365 días al año. Muchos me piden los motivos por los que he decidido volver. Yo también me los he preguntado varias veces. Casi cada día, porque con mis responsabilidades y espero que solo por ahora, casi auto-sufragándome el proyecto casi por completo, algunos días se hacen cuesta arriba. Como me gustan las listas con guiones y números, paso a enumerarlos. 1-En 2025 se cumplen 20 años de mi primera participación y además cumplo 40 años. Me gustan los números bonitos y con sentido y he pensado que era ahora o nunca. No creo en la numerología, pero además, reservé a la Clase Mini el número de carrera 1054, que no es otro que el 450, numero de mi fiel Emotion de aquellos años, al revés… más un 1 de primero. Casi capicúa. Hacer la Mini Transat, con todo el esfuerzo que requiere, 4 veces, creo que sería una buena despedida de la vela oceánica en solitario. 2-Llevaba 15 años con ideas en mi cabeza, que fueron tomando forma desde el mismo día que me bajé de mi último proyecto oceánico. Eran tanto ideas de diseño, formas, inventos, maneras de entrenar, pensar, o maneras de gestionar un proyecto que día a día me golpeaban en la cabeza, así que volver a arrancar un proyecto de estas características me permitía vaciar mi cabezota y asegurarme que funcionaban o no. 3-No escondo que quiero ganar, pero lo más importante, y no lo digo por quedar bien, es seguir aprendiendo y estar orgulloso de mi camino. Y esta es una de las razones por las cuales me estoy rodeando de los mejores. No solo me aportan su mejor saber hacer para navegar más rápido, mejor o más sereno, sino que gracias a ellos estoy calmando mi sed de conocimiento en muchas áreas que sabía de qué iba la cosa, pero no era un experto. Como siempre digo, mi único interés en la vida es irme a la tumba más sabio que el día anterior. 4-Después de bastantes años como capitán de maxiyates, me acordé que había un mundo más salvaje, más hostil, más auténtico, más contemplativo y más aventurero que no pasaba por las comodidades de un barco de lujo de millones de euros. Y yo, quería volver a experimentarlo. 5-Quiero reforzar la idea de que cruzar un océano sin combustibles fósiles, solo con el sol y el viento es posible, sostenible y competitivo. Además, quería dar un paso más allá, que es no emplear ningún producto de origen animal a bordo, por respeto a nuestros compañeros de planeta.

Il est temps de quitter l’Amazonie, la Guyane française, le continent Sud-Américain pour se diriger vers les Antilles. Avant d’en profiter, nous devons faire une escale à sec de 4 mois à Trinidad, afin de rentrer en toute sécurité en Belgique. En effet, Trinidad est « normalement » hors zone cyclonique ; il ne faut en tout cas pas s’aventurer davantage au nord en cette période. L’ouragan Béryl qui vient malheureusement de passer en est la preuve. Mais d’abord l’océan Atlantique nous attend pour une petite traversée de 4 jours et 4 nuits. Mon cousin David, qui nous avait accueilli en Guyane, se décide à la dernière minute à faire cette navigation avec nous. Après 2 jours d’acclimatation sous une houle plutôt forte, les 2 jours suivants sont beaucoup plus agréables et nous profitons tous des plaisirs de la voile et de retrouver une eau d’un bleu magnifique ! Après plus de 4 mois dans les eaux brunes de l’Amazonie, cela fait du bien ! On jette l’ancre pour une nuit à Tobago afin de profiter d’un beau snorkeling avant de repartir dès le lendemain pour Trinidad, où nous allons sortir Orion de l’eau. Une belle navigation, avec des changements de voiles, une mer un peu capricieuse, des dauphins, de magnifiques levers et couchers de soleil, et une chouette ambiance belge 😉 !

Buckle up everyone, it’s adventure time 😉 Zach and I head up North to Llandudno for a few nights. We waste no time and head first to a blue lagoon but we seemed to have planned the trip in the stormiest time of the year so we had to scrap the hike we wanted to do. However, instead we head 10 minutes South to Dorothea Quarry- as beautiful as it was, we were made to feel quite unwelcome by some divers, as being soaking wet and cold was a little demoralising! So we decided to cheer ourselves up with a climb at the Indy Climbing gym. So much fun! Next, we head to Llandudno (where we were staying) and explore Elephant cave- and then pigeon cave (oh wait- we didn’t actually make it there- but it was for a really cool reason, you will have to watch to see why we couldn’t this day…) The next day, we wake up bright and early, brush off the slight hangover and head into Anglesey, the little island in the North West corner of Wales known for its beautiful beaches and ancient sites. We first head to Porth Wen brickworks- a remote wild spot which is a beautiful snapshot of history. We then head round to Holyhead mountain and explore South Stack and Elins tower- despite the super high winds (and steps!) this was an incredible spot and well worth the visit. Finally, we headed to Newborough Beach and Reserve. This was my personal favourite and after we walked to the end of Llandwyn island, a tidal island which is home to the church celebrating the Patron Saint of Love (pure coincidence that it was Valentine’s Day when we visited), we enjoyed a beautiful pink and purple sunset on the beach before heading back to the hotel. What a trip! It’s memories like these which we will hold so close to our hearts when we leave Wales. We call Unit 2 in the new Harken integrated ILCA kicker/boom vang system “The Twiddle”. It’s the component that lives moving up and down in the middle of the purchase system. Until now, every 12:1 or 15:1 ILCA vang system ever designed has employed a traditional double block right there. Those sheaves manage different loads and spin at very different rates. So every conventional double block tips over, the line becomes unaligned and chafes the sides. The Twiddle is a fiddle block with a designed-in 45 degree twist. The Twiddle stays aligned and erases that chafe. This has not taken very long: sailors in other Classes are grasping the Twiddle’s potential to vanquish friction and improve responsiveness in purchase systems. Good on ‘em! The Twiddle was certainly designed for the ILCA but there is no reason you can’t put one to work in halyard tension or on the cunningham or anywhere else you figure they’ll work better. After multiple failed attempts last season, we finally get our weather window and set sail for Lady Elliot Island – a destination that’s been just out of reach for far too long. Departing from Rooney Point, we take on the 51-nautical-mile passage with high hopes… but the wind doesn’t exactly cooperate. What should’ve been a clean sail turns into a bit of a test of patience as we motor-sail our way north. But getting there was only part of it. Once we arrived, we made a call that went against what the sailing apps were telling us – choosing to moor on the northern buoy based on local advice from a dive skipper. Time will tell if that was the right move… With ARGO secured (for now), we celebrate finally making it here the only way that made sense – an 80s disco party onboard. But beneath the surface, there’s more waiting. We’ve heard this place is teeming with life – turtles, manta rays, and more – and tomorrow, we’re getting in the water to see it for ourselves.
