‘La Maddalena Spiaggia’ is known to kitesurfers and wing-boarders the world over as ‘Petrol Beach’ that serves up near-perfect winds in the spring, summer, and autumn. On Friday, Petrol Beach was the opening venue for foiling of a different kind with Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli at pretty much full tilt, rocketing around shadow-boxing testing before the chase boat team laid marks near the Sella de Diavolo across the Bay towards Cagliari, and Jimmy Spithill and Francesco Bruni put the hammer down. It was full-on race-pace with a premium on slick tacks and gybes and plenty of fast head-up and tacks immediately after the leeward mark – the ‘JK’ as it’s known in America’s Cup parlance. Execution got better and better as the day went on, especially through the tacks where a small sheet-on of the jib was observed just as the windward foil arm is lowered and the helmsman wheels over. With these LEQ12s, the smallest adjustment makes the biggest difference, and the Italians are working so effectively as a unit onboard that they actually are starting to make sailing these high-powered weapons, easy. Interesting in interview afterwards with Davide Cannata who for this America’s Cup cycle is in charge of Onboard Communications and Electronics having been a sailor on the team’s AC75 in Auckland, as he gave a perspective of just how tricky the comms are, saying: “First of all electronics, salt water and wind don't work really well together so it's always challenging. It was really challenging last time as well, but this time we face the new question mark that we actually weren't thinking about because this boat is tiny and we are always trying to go in a more Formula One setup, the guys onboard are very covered up by the carbon and the radio frequency is very challenging to pass through all these obstacles.” Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. Not exactly tourist brochure weather today in Palma with leaden skies relentlessly depositing persistent precipitation whilst the mercury barely nudged above 12 degrees all day. The wind thankfully came back in for the INEOS Britannia team who made the very best of Saturday to catch up on their testing programme having sat out Friday after the total becalm on Thursday. After a slow start, the Bay of Palma served up an afternoon of blustery 15-18 knot breezes with at times a short chop and it was clear that the sailors were more than up for the challenge. And talking about what caused the splashdown, Wilson added: “We need to have a little look at the data but you've probably seen, and I'm sure you got it on the video, we ended up with two boards up in the air and so not a lot of righting moment and there was about 18 knots at the time and so it's just a real slow rollover and then we righted the boat from there, no damage to the boat initial inspections are all quite encouraging the boys actually really changed keep sailing but you know it's our first time putting her on a side so we thought it was prudent just come back to the shore and just check the electronics and make sure everything was okay.” Section 41. Alinghi Red Bull Racing’s sailing week concluded on Friday with a thoroughly entertaining and highly productive morning session catching the north-westerly breeze that filtered over the Barcelona city centre producing puffy conditions that topped out at 10 knots with stronger gusts offshore. Nils Theuninck, the former ILCA and Finn ace and part of the Power Group for Alinghi Red Bull Racing, can clearly see the progress the team has made since the start of the year, saying: “I think we've made big improvements on our manoeuvre exits, the jib trim is much better and I think our manoeuvres were much better in the hard conditions we had today.” And when asked about the new jib system, Theuninck commented: “It's working really well, much better than the previous one, so yeah good step forward, still room to learn more …we are still working every time we go out as we try to measure jibs, measure loads and try to get some more speed out of it.” Section 41. Patriot, the soon-to-be de-commissioned warhorse of the New York Yacht Club American Magic syndicate is thoroughly enjoying the autumn of its days, proving to be the perfect test and training platform at full-scale before the syndicate’s next-gen boats arrive in short order. Almost the ‘grand-dame’ of AC75s, Patriot ongoing role may well be to inspire future generations, perhaps ending her days housed in a maritime museum with a back-story worthy of a serial drama. But for now, she’s still got what it takes, and more, to cut it at the top table of the America’s Cup and that scalpel hull form looks oh so relevant and inspiring for the new AC75 designs that are sat on the super-computer desktops of the world’s greatest naval architects awaiting the green-light to build. “We’re just trying to make the most of the sailing we can get in while we're still in Patriot,” said an almost wistful Madison Molitar, a former U23 All American Men’s Eight rowing champion, and a key component of the hugely impressive cyclor unit on American Magic. A performance of epic proportions, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli showed the America’s Cup world once again that they mean business in this tournament. It was power and poetry wrapped in 45 knots of fire and fury on a blustery Cagliari day that saw the Italian LEQ12 being pushed at full race-pace by a team operating at seemingly another level. Flight was so stable to be almost mesmeric and the 54 tacks and gybes were just effortless demonstrations in foil-to-foil gliding. For good measure the chase boat team threw in some marks and challenged the crew, with the helms rotated through the session, to show razor sharp bear-aways, G-Force inducing round-ups and even a ‘JK’ move (so named after John Kostecki), for good measure. And it was a day for load as a wintery 15 knots whipped up chop on the Bay, sending the Italian LEQ12 at breath-taking speeds. Marco Capitani, the well-known North Sails grand-prix sail designer from the Carasco loft in Italy and an integral part of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sail team gave a fascinating insight into his role when asked by Michele Francesco Melis, a yacht designer himself and now on the Recon Unit, about the tools that they use, the membranes, the panel codes and the RANS software that feeds into the overall design calculations, offsets and response offices that feed into the VPPs, saying: “The North Design suite software is all linked…we use the entire North Sails design suite and so every software programme like Membrain, Flow, Spiral, Desman they are all linked together and they are great tools to monitor or predict what will be the flying shape what will be the loads and…we use this boat to validate our tools.” Section 41. In stark contrast to weather across the pond in America or down under in New Zealand, Europe is proving to be a somewhat tricky winter training venue for the America’s Cup teams. The Bay of Palma today was millpond still, a shimmering mirrored seascape that promised a little but delivered precisely nothing in terms of breeze for the INEOS Britannia team whose shore team and sailors took full marks for effort. Iain Jensen summed it up beautifully saying: “We knew that it was going to be a light day but we were hoping to get a couple of hours in, with these boats they're so new and so complicated that even when you don't get to go sailing there's things you can look at so it wasn't a day that was completely wasted but for sure it would have been nicer to be able to sheet on and go for a yacht.” Section 41. Emirates Team New Zealand’s senior sailing team were both testing and tested today, venturing out onto a worsening weather forecast in maximum top-end conditions that saw gusts of 26 knots filtering down over the highest tide of the year. Ray Davies, the Head Coach at Emirates Team New Zealand, offered his usual outstanding insight and thoughts on the day saying: “Definitely a top end day and we made sure the tide was with the wind today so yeah huge tides at the moment in Auckland, we were seeing up 26 knots at times so proper top end but a lot of the time 18 to 26 range. It was a good real shakedown; we want to see the boat right back up the range and flicking around between manual or auto control as we wish but the boat was going really good up range. We made a few subtle changes, but you probably won't know what they were, and we’ve got a horrendous forecast for the next week, so we wanted to push into today and get a good day and then we’ll be ashore for a while now until the breeze settles.” Section 41. For the record, Patriot glided foil-to-foil through some 48 tacks and 31 gybes and didn’t splash down once – yes a full 100% success rate in 16-19 knots of breeze. Not only that, downwind they hit speeds above 50 knots – the first time we’ve seen the ‘big 5-0’ recorded in this America’s Cup cycle. And the distance covered, well it was three short of the ton mark, but 97 nautical miles is an astonishing day’s run with 186 minutes of pure flight time. Incredible performance from the sailing team. With brilliance showing through, out in Pensacola Bay on a daily basis and a relentless programme that will have the team out training all the way through February, there’s still a remarkable humility and willingness to push further, faster and harder that was exemplified by a wonderfully open and honest interview with Tom Slingsby afterwards. Looking at the team with fresh eyes, this former World Sailor of the Year 2021, commented: “I think Terry (Hutchinson) and Tyson (Lamond) have done a great job from an overall of planning things…things that were done maybe a year ago just to get us here, sailing the AC75 consistently with the full squad, sailing day in day out all this whole winter, that's been an amazing move.” Section 41. Just when we thought we were about to see the America’s Cup burst into two-boat testing life, alas it was a tease from Emirates Team New Zealand who launched AC40-3, the one-design version, and the LEQ12 adjacent to each other but only the AC40 ventured out on a blustery Auckland summer day. Apparently according to the recon team onsite it was to check that the two boats could “talk to each other” – but quite what they were saying is anyone’s guess? world will be sitting up at numbers like that. Pietro Sibello, Sailing Team Adviser to Alinghi Red Bull Racing, spoke yesterday about how the team could perhaps get a jump on the competition in sheer sailing terms as they acclimatise to the swell in Barcelona. It’s going to be a huge factor in the 37th America’s Cup and today BoatZero was again battling that Barca swell as it reverberated relentlessly off the port walls with the crew dancing on the fine line between flight and splash down. With a first generation AC75, it’s a tough ask but the learnings from the day were captured by long-time sail designer for the North Sails loft in France, Gautier Sergent, who was onboard today, as he said: “Any sailing day is intense otherwise you don't learn, so the good thing today was that we learned stuff we can't simulate on the computer, its dynamic, what we call ‘off-design-case’ which is great learning for us.” Section 41. It’s a huge week for Emirates Team New Zealand but an even bigger one for the very future of the America’s Cup as the Kiwis bring in the new, fresh talent that will define the event for decades to come. Today, with their LEQ12 parked in the shed after yesterday’s overly-dramatic corkscrew capsize, the team brough their one-design AC40-3 out to give Liv Mackay, Sam Meech, Leonard Takanashi and Marcus Hansen time both on the boat and on the helm in pretty epic 15-20 knot top-end conditions. Speaking afterwards, Liv Mackay, who is a key member of the New Zealand SailGP Team, gave possibly the stand-out interview of the recon programme so far, full of enthusiasm and gratitude for the opportunity, summing up the day saying: “It was awesome, it was my first time helming onboard the AC40, so it was an amazing day for me, and I’m so stoked to have been out there. There was plenty of breeze, there was 15-20 knots for the whole session, had a really good session out in the Back Paddock and Motuhei so yeah really good we had a few different crew rotations between Sam Meech, Marcus Hansen and Josh Junior, we swapped around a bit getting ready for some two-boat testing so hopefully it will be good fun.” Section 41. New York Yacht Club American Magic went big time offshore today in search of swell that mimicked the likely conditions in Barcelona, testing out cant angles and ride height on long runs of up to half an hour at a time that covered some 61 nautical miles. It wasn’t a day for throwing Patriot around, but 16 manoeuvres were completed with 100% foil-to-foil accuracy in a near-perfect 8-12 knot breeze – a statistic that shows just where this team is at right now. Terry Hutchinson, President of Sailing Operations and Skipper gave a deep-dive insight into the team’s performance and the overall programme in a wide ranging interview afterwards. Asked about the day he offered: “Obviously as we see the Recon coming out of Barcelona and we’re pretty keen to go out sailing in a sea state and some swell and I think early on we got out there in the in the ebb tide but it was a little bit more conducive to what we were after a little bit further offshore so we got aways away and when you can't see the skyline that much in Pensacola anymore then you know you're pretty far out there. It was a good day to sail in the sea state and a good day too to try the different settings and different cant positions that we were after.” Section 41. “It’s the first day I have ever been sailing in Sardinia with snow on the mountains, it was very cold,” was how a rather chilly Jimmy Spithill described a stunning session put in by the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team out on the Bay of Angels in Cagliari. With snow-capped mountains as the backdrop, it was a day for the full thermals and drysuits as the team docked out at 10.30am before absolutely putting the pedal to the floor on their beautiful LEQ12 prototype. And with the wind approaching the upper ranges of 19 knot gusts but a mean of around 13 knots, the premium was on mainsail control as the Italians went in to some 55 manoeuvres throughout a thoroughly entertaining demonstration of high-speed sailing at near race pace. INEOS Britannia broke out their new, smaller mainsail - the one that they first displayed last week on a sail-fit just outside the harbour - for a demonstration of high-speed data gathering aboard the ‘Silver Bullet’ T6 in gusty, blustery conditions that deteriorated through the afternoon. Two baffling initial tows across the Bay of Palma at speeds just below 20 knots were explained by Bleddyn Mon, one of the team’s key cross-over links between the design and sailing teams, as: “still trying to gather some data for the designers and there's some quite specific tests that they want to do under tow.” But with the tests done, the team went for a ‘fruity’ side tow, one of the trickiest and diciest states for these boats, to get the new mainsail onboard and hoisted, complemented by the J3 sensibly as the clouds amassed ominously on the hills around them. A moment’s respect for the Alinghi Red Bull Racing shore team who were at the base well before dawn – perhaps even well before some locals had actually finished their evening – for an early morning splash of BoatZero as the mercury touched zero. But whilst the shore team shivered and the sailors dug out their warmest thermals beneath their drysuits, it was a demand of a different kind that the team would have wished for on this crisp Barcelona morning. Speaking afterwards, one of the more fascinating interviews was conducted with an Alinghi Red Bull Racing team member as Pietro Sibello took to the microphone. Remember, Sibello was an integral part of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli set-up and although ineligible to race with the team is one of the key Sailing Team Advisers, alongside Dean Barker. When asked about what he and Dean talk about off the water, Sibello offered: “We are talking about all the areas. You know this is a new team, we know that we have a good capacity, and very good people here, but we are starting from scratch, all working together, and we have to improve as quick as we can in all the areas.” Section 41. They’re the gold standard, the Blue Riband, the benchmark by which everyone else measures themselves against, so when Emirates Team New Zealand capsize an AC40 in LEQ12 mode, the analysis and the spotlight is intense. In truth, what we saw today was what can happen even in fairly benign conditions when trim goes out of kilter and the team are caught at the crucial moment by a gust. A bear-away just as the breeze filtered in at 14 knots and in the blink of an eye, the ETNZ LEQ12 was into a dramatic nosedive and corkscrew just off the Royal Akarana Yacht Club with the rudder elevator out of the water in echoes of their previous capsize that caused extensive bow damage before Christmas 2022. This time however, with the bow beefed up, there were no catastrophic results, just red faces, but down the mine and over on its side the LEQ12 went, offering a soaking to the leeward port pod crew as the boat corkscrewed round and elicited more than likely a groan of concern from the boss, Grant Dalton, watching on in the chase boat. Blair Tuke was one of those in the wet leeward pods and summed it up saying: “The wind was sort of going anywhere between 6 and maybe 14 knots…and just hit us just as we were bearing away, and we didn’t quite adjust on the controls but yeah it reminds you that the boat’s pretty hard to sail but nice to get back up and carry on sailing after that and get a couple more laps in.” Section 41. The question most posed around the British yachting scene invariably goes: “How’s INEOS doing?” Well for the fans, after today’s performance out at the team’s winter training base in Palma, they can be pretty assured that the most comprehensive British challenge ever for the America’s Cup, is right on the money. In some respects, yes this is a sailing programme, but step back from that and right now it’s a data validation exercise. T6 is fully loaded with sensors from the bow to the stern, underwater, on the foils, on the hull to most noticeably up aloft at the mast tip with cameras capturing everything. High-tech science is the name of the game but refreshingly, Giles Scott, Head of Sailing Operations, isn’t getting too bogged down in the shinier tech being utilised and gave an insight into the sailor’s mind-set when asked just what the GPS aerial crane ‘crown’ at the masthead was: “You know what? Honestly your guess is as good as mine. Yeah, I think it's some kind of telemetry device what exactly it is, like, I don't know.” Section 41. Breeze on and Emirates Team New Zealand did what they do best – put the frighteners up the rest of the America’s Cup world. It was a magnificent display of sailing in the upper ranges today as the ‘Back Paddock’ delivered wind against tide and choppy water but for the Kiwis they pressed on “offshore as far as we could” according to helmsman Nathan Outteridge, in search of even more. They found it and then pushed to the outer limits, with Blair Tuke and Andy Maloney plying their flight control trade on the ragged edge of possibility. And as Outteridge, always immense in interview, said afterwards: “When you get to those bits where there is wind against tide you do get some good chop and we were just testing the limits on how high we can fly, how well the foil behaves at those high ride heights and like I think anybody who knows foiling knows, the less foil immersion is generally quicker. But you get a bit too high, you get too much air on the foil and the boat drops down. We’ve got a test foil on, and the one design foil, so just trying to learn a bit about those and it was a pretty good day for us.” Section 41.
