Our adventure continues as our mast falls into the Atlantic during the final leg of our journey: A brisk 140 mile beam reach from Sal Island to Mindelo. Aboard the mighty Quetzal, disabled and adrift, John Kretchmer lives up to his legendary seafaring status as he safely leads us back to harbor. Part three of this offshore series demonstrates the real world difficulties encountered when a relatively new Selden rig is lost on a 47 foot sailing yacht in Africa.

In this short episode, we will look at the best Seawind Catamarans currently in production. We’ll talk about their technical specifications and market prices while giving you a peak at their beautifully modern exteriors and interiors, so stay tuned to see our choice for the number one spot! Thanks to their remarkably effective and top-notch sailing offerings, Seawind Catamarans built a fantastic reputation for over three decades as a fabricator of reliable sailing catamarans designed to handle the toughest of offshore conditions. One of its most remarkable feats is the Seawind 1260’s clinching of the sailor’s choice award and the best option under 50 feet at Cruising World in 2019. The Australian-designed and owned Seawind Catamarans are known to put sailing performance above sheer volume, which means they have narrower hulls that can cut through the water more efficiently. With offshore standards in mind, these cats bring much-needed peace of mind to all their owner-sailors, and we will cover all these exciting features and more in this episode. ⛵️ Leave a LIKE, write a COMMENT, and SHARE this video if you enjoyed it! ⛵️ SUBSCRIBE and click the notification BELL to be updated with new episodes! After the master-blasting, almost demonstration-sailing, that we saw earlier in the week from Emirates Team New Zealand, Friday’s session was one for the tweakers and wind whisperers but once again the sailing team showed the range of their abilities with some fascinating sail control on display. With so much concentration on sail design, it was a coup for the Recon Unit to grab the legendary Burns Fallow, a stalwart of the North Sails Auckland loft and Global Superyacht Manager who is ETNZ’s Chief Sail Designer, for an interview with a key team member widely regarded in the America’s Cup as the finest sailmaker. Looking at the LEQ12 development he set the scene saying: “These boats have massive ranges of power requirement from 8 knots of apparent wind speed to 60 knots so trying to get something with a lot of controls there and just how we do that is, well…top secret.” When asked about the mainsail inversion we’ve seen, Fallow offered: “Well, going back to the big boats, the 72s, that was definitely the game but of course they are much taller rigs so that was a necessity but when your apparent wind is getting right up there even on these short little stubby rigs, that also comes into play.” Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli put on a demonstration of foiling monohull excellence today out on a gusty, shifty Bay of Angels in front of Poetto Beach proving beyond any question from the very first flight the need for dynamic, rapid mainsail sheeting and traveller control. Indeed, today on a relatively short training session that lasted just under two hours, the Italians debuted a new, smaller-aloft mainsail which the recon unit recorded as having: “reduced square head girth and missing clew patch being sewed on the main itself.” Clearly the thinking being that in the higher bracket wind-ranges, inverting the top – impressive as that is - is actually detrimental to speed so the sail area has been shifted to the lower third. Fine margins being played with here and a very clever solution at the clew. Speaking afterwards, Marco Donati, from the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Electronics Department goes into the key differences between an AC75 and their LEQ12 Prototype. Section 41. INEOS Britannia, Britain's challenger for the 37th America 's Cup, has suffered damage to their T6 Test Boat after a capsize incident during a test day on Palma Bay, Mallorca in Spain. INEOS Britannia Skipper and Team Principal Sir Ben Ainslie said, “It was a tough situation for the team once T6 fully inverted. Everyone came together well to resolve what could have been a much more serious issue in salvaging the yacht. Thankfully everyone is safe, and we can now focus on repairing the damage as part of a pre-scheduled upgrade window at the end of this week.” Section 41. With the eyes of the America’s Cup world on them, Emirates Team New Zealand are setting the benchmark and announcing the level, seemingly on a daily basis, that every other team will have to strive for in order to prise the Auld Mug from upstairs at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. Speaking about the sail programme, Nathan Outteridge gave a fascinating insight and when asked about the inversion he responded: That’s the beauty of development sails, isn't it? And doing multiple iterations of sails you try and work out what wind range you want the sails in and what you want them to do up and down the wind range. It’s no secret that you want them flatter when it’s windier and deeper when it’s lighter and a lot of our sailing so far has been middle to upper end and we’re really looking to try and get the two boats in the water in the lighter breeze to see how our sail design programme is going. And also, there’s benefits of having an auto pilot keeping the boat really nicely locked in versus manual flight and having two boats that are identical etc and how you sail them. It’s fascinating for us, we learn lots from that and it's pretty insightful to go back and review the data and try work out how you can improve.” Section 41. It was a dull start to what turned out to be a highly productive data gathering day for INEOS Britannia with leaden, dull skies greeting the ever-cheery early morning shore team who are doing wonders with keeping T6 operational and the sailors firmly in their drysuits and on the water. Asked if the boat was up at 100% operational capacity now after several days of near perfect sailing time, Giles Scott was fairly candid when he said: “It's getting closer. We’ve still got some reasonably big-ticket items that we know we've got to iron out and will be looking to do that over the over the coming weeks. It's a bit of a balancing act getting good time on the water collecting that key information that the design team need for decisions for RB3 (Race Boat Three) so that's really the juggling act we're playing at the moment.” Section 41. It’s very hard to think of a more exhilarating sight in world sailing right now than two AC40’s short-course racing in 18 knots of breeze. That was the scene in Auckland this afternoon (Tuesday) with Emirates Team New Zealand hitting the water hard for a thoroughly entertaining two-boat session, lining up the LEQ12 against the one-design AC40-3 in auto-pilot mode over short 1-mile courses and letting the best in the world off the leash. On the run home, set up on port tack with boats flying on the one-design foil it was nip and tuck, and Sam Meech, one of the new breed of sailors in Emirates Team New Zealand and a bronze medallist in the 2016 Olympics in the Laser Class spoke about the speed differences saying: “Yeah at times they seem pretty similar, we’re still getting used to the boats, we’re quite far behind on days but we’re getting better as a team and yeah the boats are reasonably similar on port.” Section 41. With the gloom of Saturday thankfully passing, the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team had an early start on Sunday for a three-hour session out on the Bay of Cagliari that again saw the test team putting the LEQ12 through her paces before the wind died off at midday. With a 7am roll-out, it was a very early start for the Italian shore team and for the sailors it was clearly another day for foil testing with long flight seeing one run last some 48 minutes in total. The recon unit observed that: “The monitoring of flow around the foil arm stocks and the inboard wing seems to continue as both boards were armed with the usual GoPro cases on pressure and suction sides while a new port side flap version has been declared with minor geometry changes.” Section 41.
Sir Ben Ainslie was back onboard the ‘Silver Bullet’ T6 today on a chilly and breezy Palma Bay for a testing session that, similar to the other teams right now sailing in the LEQ12 mode, concentrated firmly on foil testing, pitch sweeps and cant angles. The British prototype was pushed to its limit with a new, and undisclosed, top speed thought to be into the mid 40 knot bracket but what was noticeable with the programme today was the concentration on modes of the boat. Speaking afterwards, a rather chilly Ben offered: “We were just trying different pitch sweeps with different board angles and so on to really give the design engineers the best idea of how those foils are performing and then that relates into how you go and design your race foils.” The variable, shifty conditions today called for the biggest J1 jib to be used throughout the afternoon and didn’t faze the testing programme as Ben continued: “It's hard when you’re trying to test and the wind’s changing around quite a lot, fortunately for us we were doing a kind of testing where actually the accuracy of the wind didn’t matter too much, it was more to do with how the foils were reacting to different speeds and pitches.” Section 41. It’s a fond farewell to Patriot, with the New York Yacht Club American Magic team concluding the weekend offshore before sailing her back to Pensacola to be greeted by patriotic red, white and blue flares to mark the end of her time as an America’s Cup workhorse. A graceful retirement awaits but it was one thoroughly entertaining final hurrah with the recon unit estimating that over 100 nautical miles was covered at blistering pace, so fast that in the seaway the recon RIB couldn’t keep up at times. Patriot was up and foiling for some 104 minutes, proving that there’s a lot of life still left in the tank and as a training and testing platform, she’s been sublime for the team at full scale. Paul Goodison, skipper alongside Riley Gibbs today, had a tinge of sadness about the de-commissioning of Patriot saying: “Yesterday we had some full on noise with up to 25 knots (of wind) and over 50 knots in every bear-away to then going outside and having a seaway - probably the biggest we’ve sailed Patriot in today - so a lot of challenging conditions and it's been great to experience that with the team from top to bottom and just see how everybody in the team has pretty much risen to the challenge. We've had two fantastic days sailing to finish Patriot here in Pensacola.” Section 41. With the wind Gods not playing ball for most of the week in Cagliari, the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailors were keen to make up for lost time and hit the water on Saturday for a full-on day of foil and cant testing onboard their lavishly adorned LEQ12. The interaction with the foils is something clearly on the Italian design team’s mind and there were some interesting take-aways in the recon interview with naval architect Andres Suar who clearly has one eye on the conditions in Barcelona saying: “Basically in your design process you give quite a bit more weight to any event that is related to any crash down or hull touching so you need to take that into account and also how the boat will behave once (off the foils), the chances of dropping on a pre start and things like that you need for sure to take that into account as it will be a big difference, and also the interaction with the foils will be quite different.” Section 41. Part 2 is the second half of our run to Cape Verde with world famous sailor, John Kretchmer aboard the mighty Quetzal. Watch as we sail the spinnaker for the last 200 miles into Sal. You will see why John's offshore sailing programs are in such high demand, providing a real sailing experience with practical knowledge given throughout. His tutorial on celestial navigation and the fast bowline knot is the best I've seen.
