Alinghi Red Bull Racing gave the America’s Cup world a glimpse toward the future on Saturday as the team debuted their new deck layout and reduced numbers as a result taking the crew down to eight and bringing aero cyclors into the Swiss mix. Word coming out of the Alinghi Red Bull Racing camp is that Arnaud Psarofaghis is absolutely ‘unbeatable’ on the team’s simulator and as skipper he’s wearing the leadership cap well and very much growing into his new status. There’s a lot of pressure on his shoulders but as one of the coolest, and nicest, characters in the America’s Cup, he’s taking it all in his stride, grateful for the opportunity and determined to lead the team to victory. Who’d bet against him? In interview afterwards, Arnaud was his usual affable self, saying: It was a really good day for us after the stop of the boat in the shed and all the modifications that we’ve done so it was a really good commissioning day, and we could even push to try to do as many manoeuvres as we could because we made some changes so just need to set up everything. It was a really good day out sailing, great conditions bit of swell from the east direction but much better than we could expect.” Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024

Underlining their status as arguably the stand-out Challenger for the 37th America’s Cup, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli today completed a masterclass of a double-session and sent out a very clear signal to the rest of the teams, that they mean business. Jimmy Spithill was back onboard with his Kangaroo-decaled helmet in the starboard pod and whenever Jimmy’s in town, the boat looks to have an added dimension. Tacks were slick, gybes were crisp and the bear-aways around the windward marks in the afternoon sea-breeze were rapid and flat. This is demonstration sailing Italian-style and so confident are the team now in their LEQ12 that mistakes are rare, mishaps fewer. The Italian juggernaut looks unstoppable. Speaking afterwards, Jimmy Spithill was his usual open self and clearly very settled with the team, saying: “We got a great session in the morning with the Mistral, then we came back, had lunch European style, little siesta and then we got out there in the afternoon for the sea-breeze direction…It was a pretty unstable funny day, but it just worked out beautifully on that course area where we got our own little private sea-breeze for a couple hours.” Section 41. This is only the beginning of our 10 week journey across New Zealand (Aotearoa) and it has not easy by any means, but we pushed on, taking it day by day - hoping to detour and see as much as we can along the way. The gear used in this video is from @wildearthaustralia and I would like to thank them for their support throughout this journey - our tent, has quickly become our new home and we absolutely love it. Hopefully the legs will keep pushing us on so I can make a second video and turn some more park benches into my living room. It's been tough to edit this on the go, whilst also hoping my laptop is not getting smashed in my pannier (so far so good) so thank you for taking the tine to watch this. K & J

It’s the video that every America’s Cup and nascent AC40 team around the world will be poring over, offering a glimpse into the challenge that the world’s greatest sailors are going to face in Barcelona in September and October 2024. The swell came in today for Alinghi Red Bull Racing aligned with a thermal Garbi afternoon breeze, making the team’s AC40 perform like a bucking bronco at times as the crew worked on co-ordination to try and find the optimum ride height both upwind and down. Ride too low and the bow dug in but fly too high, and the boat was immediately dancing on the knife edge of control. It’s the conundrum that all the teams are going to face and whilst every team has mentioned the swell in Barcelona in recent interviews, for now it’s only Alinghi Red Bull Racing that has the experience at the actual venue. It could be a crucial point of difference when the action starts in earnest. For the Swiss, the week has been a very positive one. Not only did the team celebrate the 20-year anniversary of their fantastic lifting of the America’s Cup in 2003 but also revealed a heavily updated BoatZero with cyclor stations that has been under the technicians spotlight ahead of sailing at the weekend. Looking back on the Cup winning team of 2003 and the synergies with today’s sailors, Pierre-Yves Jorand, the co-General Manager of Sports and Sailing Operations at Alinghi Red Bull Racing and part of the Swiss ‘family’ back in 2003 was the perfect person to interview and he said: “It's very unilateral. We obviously have a very strong Design Team bringing lots of knowledge from AC36, we have a very experienced Shore Team bringing knowledge and giving expertise and we have a very talented Sailing Team not that much on the America’s Cup side, but on foiling. So, it's very unilateral, every team member is invited to speak up, to share ideas and then it's up to the Head of Department in discussion to make the best of it.” Section 41. On November 21st, 1902, the Canadian wheat carrier SS Bannockburn vanished without a trace on Lake Superior. With no clues to help explain the disappearance, the mystery haunted sailors on the Great Lakes for decades. Soon sightings of a ghost ship resembling the Bannockburn became frequent on stormy nights. She quickly became known as The Flying Dutchman of Lake Superior. The ability to go on these adventures is a hard won feat, one that takes days and weeks, months, or even years of preparation. Now Atticus II is in great shape. But all boats are constantly in need of some kind of maintenance or repair. UV from the sun, salt water, fresh water, metal corrosion, wood rot, humidity, Long periods of immobility mixed with momentarily gigantic forces all conspire to turn any actively cruising Sailboat into a loose cluster of breaking down systems. I’ve often used the analogy that a cruising sailboat is a bomb with a lit fuse, every now and then we need to splice on a bit more fuse to keep the whole thing from blowing. But this time around we’re going to have Isabella with us, so in addition to boat maintenance I’m going to be working on some improvements that will help me singlehanded the boat with minimal help from Desiree. So now it’s time to stow our snorkel gear and hiking shoes, and to bust out the tools, so we can keep this bomb from exploding just a little bit longer. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli set out from their Cagliari base in the early morning with high hopes of a decent day on the water, even setting the smaller M2 mainsail in the expectation of a fluid north-westerly but it was a fickle wind with vast holes that struggled to bother the anemometer above 7 knots. After three failed tow-ups with the J1 set, the team repaired to just off the beautiful Sella del Diavolo beach where legend has it that Lucifer upon seeing the beauty of Cagliari’s Gulf, decided to try and conquer the land, and was promptly stopped by God, who sent his angels to fight him! A perfect spot for lunch and perhaps one of the most beautiful spots in Sardinia. With the breeze resolutely not playing ball – the team repaired back to base and remained on stand-by, but were stood down at 3pm and called it a day. The recon unit’s Michele Melis manged to catch Philippe Presti, the French ‘supercoach’ to the Italian team for a broad interview afterwards where he talked about the campaign so far, saying: “The campaign to now is very exciting. I think the boats are very exciting especially the little one (LEQ12) we designed and built, and we are super happy with the outcome of this experiment and we believe it's going to translate into good results on the big boat…I think we learned from Auckland quite a bit. In Auckland everyday was an improvement from the next and all the designers reflected for almost two years, and I think now the boats are way more agile and do all the manoeuvres very, very, quickly and the performance are astonishing at times.” Section 41.

A frustrating Thursday for both Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and Alinghi Red Bull Racing as both teams attempted to sail but found conditions conspiring against them. For Alinghi Red Bull Racing, March 2nd is a date etched into the team’s DNA as it marks the moment 20 years ago when Ernesto Bertarelli lifted the America’s Cup having beaten Team New Zealand in Auckland 5-0 in a very one-sided Match that took the Auld Mug back to Europe for the first time since the event’s inception in 1851. The team reportedly celebrated in style at the Alinghi Red Bull Racing base in the evening to mark the occasion. For the Swiss sailors though, a day that promised much with the first outing of the new deck configuration complete with cyclor station (now confirmed) was not to be. BoatZero was craned in to undergo extensive tests on all the new systems, which had the tech team onboard for some four hours, before eventually the call was made not to sail. The chase boat took the boat out of the harbour for one tow run out and back again to run through systems analysis before calling it a day and craning out. Section 41. I'm in the UAE attending the Dubai Boat Show as a guest of Gulf Craft. Having met the team and tested their 100 and 120 Majesty Yachts in Cannes last September I already had a little understanding of the advantages this brand has for those considering running their vessel in charter. But this week I'm going to tour some of the latest models from Gulf Craft and explain in more detail just what that business case really is. A Super Yacht that pays for itself - YES it is possible! A thrilling new chapter for the New York Yacht Club American Magic syndicate began today with the first sail of their AC40 out on a perfect Pensacola Bay that served up billiard table flat conditions and a breeze that steadily built to top out at 12 knots. After the initial tow-testing that is mandatory upon commissioning, the sailors couldn’t wait to get sailing, but it was a good hour as the sails were loaded and set as the technical teams checked through the new set-ups before the boat was signed off and good to go. Paul Goodison was delighted with the first day saying: “I think it's a true testament to all the Shore Team who’ve got the boat together in such a short amount of time. Obviously, it's not been here very long, it’s being put together and all the checks done and obviously the boat comes very well prepared and the stuff you get from (Emirates) Team New Zealand is good and it worked nearly perfectly on the first day… but not quite perfect.” Section 41. Winter training in the northern hemisphere this year has been very much a hit or miss affair. Unseasonal breezes, rain squalls, snowfalls even have been reported from Cagliari, Palma and Barcelona making it tough on the America’s Cup programmes that are noticeably ramping up as the countdown to the start of competition ticks on. Time is the greatest enemy in any America’s Cup campaign – you simply never have enough - and after completing a short morning session on Monday to catch a weather window, the INEOS Britannia sailors have had to wait until Wednesday to get back on the water with snow-covered Mallorca hills as a backdrop. Iain Jensen chose his words carefully in the interview afterwards but came away with a good first impression, saying: “It's a great boat, everything is reasonably simple on it and it all works pretty well so yeah impressed with the boat and I’m sure it’ll be a good tool for us…I guess the characteristic of these type of boats is the righting moment changes so much with your heel and so I guess in these boats you've really got to be on it and you can't get out of whack otherwise it's hard to recover it.” Section 41. This brings a whole new meaning to "riding in style", especially on an express cruiser where jacuzzis are typically non-existent. A simply beautiful day in Auckland greeted Emirates Team New Zealand’s LEQ12 and AC40 for a full-on afternoon of rapid-fire practice starts and short one-lappers once the breeze filled in. The biggest take-away has to be that in these foiling machines, in semi-marginal conditions the likes of which we could well see in Barcelona on any given race days, the pre-start is all about staying on the foils and nailing time-on-distance. Perhaps better to be late, but staying in flight is crucial and although the AC40’s have huge manoeuvrability, large duck-aways or rounding-ups on the final approach are fatal to the outcome. As Josh Junior and Liv Mackay proved, once ahead in the AC40, passing lanes are almost non-existent and even with a boat that’s certainly a smidge faster in the LEQ12, it’s still a tall order to make the move and get past. Blair Tuke, the senior Flight Controller for ETNZ, gave a glimpse of the difficulty in the pre-start when boat-on-boat saying: “Today was a bit easier and it’s quite fun at the bottom end just trying to control the boats. It’s quite difficult to keep them foiling and then in the pre-start with the other team there you’ve got to manage them but also stay on the foil so yeah really good challenge and you know the team’s taken a lot out of it.” Section 41. After a weekend off for the sailing team, INEOS Britannia called for a mega-early start on Monday morning to catch a brief weather window before the unusually cold winter closed in again and yet another Mediterranean storm blew in at midday. The shore crew, so often the hardest working people in the America’s Cup, had the team’s AC40 out on the apron just after 7am getting ready for launch. The mercury was struggling above freezing and rain clouds sat resolutely but the AC40 was out of the harbour at 9am for a session that showed just how strong a challenge the British are mounting. Rob Wilson, the ‘supercoach’ to INEOS Britannia gave a terrific interview after sailing on the dockside saying: “…with the AC40 for us we're still learning it and so it’s kind of taking it up to the next step, taking it up to 20 knots wind speed and just seeing how she behaved so that that was the main plan for today… it's super well-behaved, the guys have got to grips with it pretty quickly and it is being a really useful platform and actually we’re really looking forward to racing it later on this year.” Section 41. They had to wait for the breeze but when it came, Emirates Team New Zealand put on another terrific display of boat-to-boat combat between the One Design AC40 and what the recon unit describe as the “fast and twitchy” LEQ12 in full development mode. New tech is being tested on the LEQ12 at a steady pace – gone was the underside winglet today on the port anhedral foil whilst up aloft the sailors were still playing with the batten arrangement, using a grinder on the Chase Boat to lop a bit off before Pete Burling could be seen wrapping tape around the fresh cut end before re-inserting. Micro adjustments but crucial to delivering a very responsive mainsail all the way to the head. In the very close pre-starts, the Kiwis were both using effectively the double-board down move which gives the boats greater stability and enables fast positional changes. Nathan Outteridge, always superb in interview, gave the following explanation: “I think it’s just trying to get the balance between the two boards. The boat’s quite tricky to turn and high turn rates with just one foil in the water so knowing how to be able to really spin the boat hard in the pre-start with both boards down to make a smooth transition to get the thing out the water. It’s quite a tippy little boat when you’re living on the edge…that’s what it comes down to in these pre-starts, knowing how your equipment works and that’s the beauty of two boats racing, you can sail around for the last few months and everything’s sweet and then you’re like ‘gotta turn right now’ and you find the limits of what the boat can do and that’s what’s been really cool to have the two boats in the water.” Section 41.
