This is jewellery for your waterfront house! This Chris Craft Calypso 35 adds some serious practical design into an exciting and fun package that could easily replace many 40ft cruisers that occupy many waterfront houses but only get used as day boats. Like all Chris Crafts I have driven in the past this Calypso 35 doesn't disapoint when it comes to the true driver experience and feedback that every Chris Craft provides. This is a boat that you take out if you want to return with a big smile on your face - gauranteed. It was day two on the water in ‘Te Rehutai’ for Emirates Team New Zealand and the elation of yesterday’s re-commissioning was quickly replaced by an air of down-to-business all around the squad. This is no vanity trip or romantic relaunch of an America’s Cup classic, it’s a cold, hard, data-gathering and systems checking exercise platform with much expected from the sailing team and the platform in the coming weeks and months as the Defenders seek to fine-tune their thinking and design ahead of the final sign-off of their new-build AC75 for Barcelona 2024. Blair Tuke, the Flight Controller par excellence and with vast experience across the foiling classes was pleased with how the second day of commissioning panned out saying: “Yeah good day I think we must have had a couple of hours on the water, got through a couple of different jibs and all in all, good day, big steps forward in just two days for us, so real good.” Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024
INEOS Britannia had a stop-start kind of day out in Palma as the on-water re-commissioning of T6, the team’s now much-modified LEQ12 prototype, called for plenty of time from the support teams just outside the harbour as the technicians ironed out a few gremlins before tow-testing of the foil they are calling ‘Wing Three’ could commence. Indeed, Chris Schirmer, the T6 Boat Captain, stayed onboard for the day to be on-hand immediately as the highly technical product of the Mercedes Applied Science approach went through its commissioning protocols. Speaking afterwards, Will Bakewell the Test & Validation lead for INEOS Britannia explained the very nature of T6 and the upgrade programme, saying: “It's been really good to get back out there and start learning stuff again. It's been a bit of a slightly extended delay compared to what we would have planned but yeah pretty good to be back out there…you may have noticed the new wing and there's a lot that you can see there and some that you can't. Good progress and I guess it shows the benefit that T6 as a platform that we can bolt new things onto and then really learn about those new items.” Section 41. We have been treated to some spectacular sailing sessions by Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli over the past few months since the launch of the LEQ12 prototype that they have taken to such a high level of professionalism to be almost peerless in sailing style. The settled senior helms of Francesco Bruni and Jimmy Spithill have been complemented with top-class helms such as Ruggero Tita and Marco Gradoni that finding a difference between them, from the outside looking in, has proven hard. Flight has been solid through the axis of Andrea Tesei, Vittorio Bissaro and Umberto Molineris and they have rarely had an off day in months. After sailing, Andrea Tesei the ace Flight Controller and even more ace 49er sailor who came to Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli via the New Generation project in 2021 gave a refreshing insight and talking about the near capsize he said: “To be honest we still need to debrief what we did but for sure we are turning the marks trying to push the boat and push the manoeuvres everyday more, so it was a bit of a tight round up and we just sank on the foil and stuffed the bow underwater and it was pretty spectacular but nothing, just some basic operational mistakes and a boat handling mistake once we start pushing around the marks. It’s just stuff that happens.” Section 41. World Cat created two new flagship models, one a center console (our 400CC-X test model) and one a dual console (the 400DC-X), to sit at the top of the food chain. At 39’8” (12.09m) these models are quite a leap above the next smaller 32’ (9.75m) models, and the builder spared nothing when equipping these new cats. With a host of modular options, this large catamaran can manage to fit the bill for a host of tasks, be it fishing, entertaining, diving or cruising. To be honest with you the idea of living and traveling on a sailboat with our newborn baby kind of scares me. All of the risks that we’ve accepted as part of our lifestyle are now being transferred to our baby girl. But even beyond the obvious dangers of sailing offshore and living off the grid, I also wonder how we’re going to deal with the simple challenges that all families face but in a much smaller space and without so many modern conveniences and sources of support. So here in Malta, a small island nation in the middle of the Mediterranean, we’re taking some time to get to know our little Isabella, to learn how to be parents on a boat, and to work on boat improvements that will make our life aboard easier and safer once we do start traveling again. It has been a tough week for Alinghi Red Bull Racing with yesterday’s session called off due to a medical emergency caused when raising the mainsail and today some pretty serious rudder damage caused to BoatZero whilst beginning an exit from a fast reach, bearing away in around 12 knots of breeze towards the Barcelonetta beach. Arthur Rozand, a key member of the Swiss design team in the VPP department gave a brief analysis and when asked to expand on the cause he offered: “The rudder let go after the bear-away, now we are looking at it and checking everything that happened basically, but now there’s not an answer I can give you.” Asked if there was much structural damage, Arthur confirmed: “Not much. We were quite lucky so it should not be too hard to fix it.” Section 41. As Drones are banned in the UAE I was not able to get you any good aerial shots for this video and our attempt with the camera boat was not suitable for this channel so I've done my best with mostly the onboard footage we filmed on the day. It is worth noting that the camera boat is riding on the same hulls as this 34CC so this actually gives you a good appreciation for how she rides if you pay attention to it in the background of me talking. Anyway this Silvercat 34CC excites me the most out of all their boats I saw in Dubai as it would be very suitable for a lot of you guys in Aus and USA I believe. She's got loads of deck space, runs good through the chop and she's super practical for a day on the water. Hope this is useful to you and i'll just have to wait till she gets to Australia so I can film it properly in the ocean for you! The Defenders of the America’s Cup on behalf of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, re-launched Te Rehutai, their all-conquering boat from AC36 in a new livery and with huge changes all over whilst welcoming onboard elite cycling athletes that have undergone extensive testing to join the team. For many it was their first time on AC75, but Emirates Team New Zealand is staffed equally with apex sailors of long Cup experience. Nathan Outteridge, the alternate helm with Pete Burling was one of those jumping onboard for the first time and he was enthused saying: “Yeah it was really cool. Obviously, I watched the boat sail around a lot a few years ago and had heaps of sailing on the AC40 lately, but nothing really compares to these beasts. They’re so big and so powerful and…fortunately for me it wasn't very windy, so it was nice to sort of ease into it. The boats are still amazing how fast they go for such little wind and just the power of these boats is something that I haven't experienced for a long time.” Section 41. It’s becoming a very good habit. Luna Rossa had another sublime afternoon out on the Bay of Cagliari charging around in perfect conditions, making the most of a brief breeze that topped out at 16-17 knots before fading and all the while collecting gold-dust data as the A/B testing on the switched foils continued over short courses at a blistering canter. The young guns of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli are seriously impressing. Ruggero Tita and Marco Gradoni are the coming superstars not just of Italian sailing, but the America’s Cup itself and it will be fascinating to see how they progress through AC37 in Barcelona. Untouchable for nearly three years in the Olympic foiling Nacra 17 class, a gold medallist at the Tokyo Games of 2020 (held in 2021), Ruggero Tita is set to be one of the stars of the future in the America’s Cup. For sure, he will have a big say in AC37 and is combining an Olympic campaign to Paris 2024 with the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli America’s Cup campaign. Speaking about the day today he gave a superb interview the day after his 31st birthday, saying: “Yeah it was really nice. I mean the sea breeze today was very strong up to 16-17 knots and we managed to sail pretty well and also the water was flat but with some swell underneath so kind of tricky. We did many jib changes and then the wind dropped so we had to give up.” Section 41. One quality you can firmly associate with Alinghi Red Bull Racing is persistence, and today (Tuesday) patience was added to the list as the team waited all day for the thermal Garbi breeze to filter in along the Barcelona waterfront and were rewarded with beautiful sailing conditions late in the afternoon. This was the longest day on the water for the Swiss by far and with Team Principal Ernesto Bertarelli, wearing the coded helmet #00, in town over the last couple of days, it was the opportunity to show the boss just what the buzz that has been building around the team in recent weeks, is all about. He will have left highly approving of how his team is gelling and advancing in this America’s Cup cycle. The path to glory at the America’s Cup is a hard one. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, the beaten finalists from 2021 know this all too well but there’s a pragmatism in their approach which was superbly exemplified by Gilberto Nobili, the team’s highly experienced and no-nonsense Operations Manager, in interview afterwards. Asked what it will take to win the Cup, he gave a comprehensive and detailed overview saying: “You know that the Defender is always few points ahead of you because they know the stuff better than you and is only racing really a few days so they can narrow down the selection of the boat, how to develop stuff. You have a little bit more practice, and as we saw last time we got to the Cup, to the final, very prepared on the field, on the racing course, they were little bit faster for sure so this time we need to close the gap, keep doing what we were doing and see if there is something there that we didn't experiment with so we need to learn a little bit more and see what the other people come out with, because now we see the other teams are starting to put new wings and new stuff in the water. It’s going to be, in the next 2-3 months, I think it's going to be very interesting to see what all the other teams has done and how we can approach the future.” Section 41. The speed at which New York Yacht Club American Magic went from one-design to LEQ12 mode on their AC40 perhaps gives a clue to just how advanced the American programme is after a brilliant winter of testing in Pensacola Bay. Today called for a mid-morning dock-out to catch a decent early morning breeze that was always set to die off into the afternoon, but these are the days that count. Grabbing even a few hours on a shifty, fading northerly breeze is of the utmost value with the design office keen to validate their thinking and calibrate what they see on the computer with what happens on the water in real-time. It’s an intense period for the Americans who continue to take big steps forward after de-commissioning Patriot, the team’s AC75 from AC36 where systems were honed at full-scale before the foil design race started in earnest with the AC40 at the weekend. Today, the team were in full test mode, keen to examine take-offs, cant sweeps, pitch and speed through a whole host of manoeuvres and straight-lines. The new starboard foil was very much the focus and the recon unit recorded that at times: “America seemed to struggle to self-foil on port tack in particular.” Michael Menninger, always brilliant in interview and one of the first names on the crew-list for the team as Flight Controller, summed up the noted issue saying: “Honestly, I don't think it’s a foil thing at all. I think it was just the way the breeze was, it was really up and down, and we had a J3 on for a lot of the morning and for the dying breeze, so it was just hard to get up.” Section 41. It was exactly two years and two days ago since Te Rehutai, the winner of the 36th America’s Cup last sailed. Back then she was the most efficient AC75 ever built with design nuances that were ahead of their time and the Emirates Team New Zealand team lifted the America’s Cup high and proud on behalf of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. Heady days. Since then, Te Rehutai has stayed sealed inside at the back of the Kiwi team’s shed, far away from prying eyes, unwilling to give up even an ounce of intellectual property until the call was made to bring full-scale testing back into the AC37 cycle. I Pete Burling, the Cup winning helmsman from 2021 was buzzing to see ‘Te Rehutai’ back in the water saying: “It's incredibly exciting to see it going back in the water today, it's a pretty cool milestone for our programme here as a team to get back into some full scale testing and obviously there's some pretty big changes in the rule from the last edition of the America’s Cup through to this time with no runners on the boat and strengthening up the rig and today's really been about making sure all those parts go back together and we're ready to get back into some tuning.” Section 41. From flat calm to full-on. It seems to be the story of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli’s winter training camp in Cagliari and today was no different. Dawn broke and the Sella del Diavolo looked inviting, calm, serene even with spring sunshine breaking over the horizon but it was fool’s gold and pretty soon it was snorting at 14-17 knots with an angry sea that looked set to stay all afternoon. On the flat starboard foil things looked harder, pitch was hit and miss, but a case could equally be made that on port tack they were punching into the waves. Vittorio Bissaro, one of the key Flight Controllers for the programme gave a superb insight saying: “Well let's say that waves give us some feedback in terms of how the two foils behave, so probably I would say that we have a better feeling with one foil compared to the other in waves but I will not say which one of course.” Yes of course Vito, but the recon video offers a few hints. As training sessions go, today (Friday) in Barcelona was about as valuable as it can get for any team aspiring to win the America’s Cup. Alinghi Red Bull Racing launched their AC40 into a heady Catalonian swell and put on a performance in light airs that will have every other Cup team analyst poring over the footage. It was classic Barcelona chop, the kind that gives Flight Controllers sleepless nights, with a confused swell beneath an onshore breeze that rose and faded around the 6-9 knots mark all afternoon. Lucien Cujean, a double Olympian in the 49er class and one of the new breed of coming Cup superstars was sublime in interview afterwards comparing the AC75, AC40 and his own experience in the 49er dinghy class, saying: “I think the most different thing is the load, definitely the loads you have to manage and to have a look on your screen and also the shape of the sails…and that's why it's so interesting to sail on the AC40 because you can have a quick look on the data and then sailing with your feeling. It’s still a 40-foot boat so you can really sail and turn it around in Barcelona.” Section 41. It’s no secret in the America’s Cup community that New York Yacht Club American Magic has had a very good winter period. Training out of beautiful Pensacola, first in the team’s AC75 ‘Patriot’ and latterly in the all-new AC40 rocket-ship, they have impressed all round. The recon unit noted that “America looked a little faster” on the starboard foils and quizzed uber coach Tom Burnham who is a three-time sailor in the America’s Cup - once with Young America and twice with Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, as well as being a coach to the Swedish team at AC35, after sailing (and in the rain!). No better person to interview, Tom was pleased with the first commissioning of the new foil saying: “It was basically a first testing day, first day of sailing with the new foil and just easing into it. We waited for the breeze to get a little bit lower and made sure we were careful with how we were sailing on that foil, but we just put it through its paces today and didn't have too long a day and got in at a reasonable hour to be able to be ready to go sailing on Monday.” Section 41. For the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailors, the mission is very clear in Cagliari at the moment. The design team are now into the final stretch before signing off on the AC75 and going into build in the next few months so the crucial calibration of the now switched foils to validate the direction of travel for the big boat is absolutely key. In interview afterwards, Round the World race winner and four-time Cup campaigner, Haracio Carabelli, gave his usual insightful interview as Design Co-Ordinator for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and he seemed more than pleased with where the team are at and the levels they’re hitting, saying: “I think we’re pretty happy. Just in time, the big boat is coming along in terms of design and all the teams will be closing up final decisions on it so we're pretty happy with what we’ve achieved so far and looking forward for the next month when we will also be coming with new stuff.” Section 41.
