The Southern Ocean is rearing its mighty head, and more than half the fleet have felt its force. Death rolls for three and a wipeout for the fourth, but most importantly, all okay onboard.

Dongfeng Race Team, MAPFRE and Team SCA all did accidental gybes (aka Chinese gybes) from Monday to Tuesday – but Dongfeng’s one happened first, in the pitch-black night, and with two young Chinese rookies onboard.

Chinese gybe, aka death roll, aka crash gybe. Basically, it’s a strong squall violently swinging the boom to the other side. The main sail slams over, the boat ends up in the water with the keel on the wrong side keeping it on its side. It’s dangerous, it’s scary – and it happened to the MAPFRE crew in the Southern Ocean, 2,000 nautical miles away from land.

It was an overcast and pretty miserable day that greeted the competitors for the last two races in the wilsonians warm up series but with again a puffy F3 wind it didnt stop people from competing. Izzy and I were assistant race officers so didn't get to do as much filming as normal and with the wind coming from the north the bits we did film were all happening on the other side of the river so its not great. But hopefully it will give you all an idea of how much fun we all had in our own different ways.

Organised by the Fundació Navegació Oceànica Barcelona (FNOB), the regatta is part of the IMOCA Ocean Masters World Championships. The start of the race is on the 31st of December 2014 at 13h00, with the starting line positioned opposite the W Barcelona hotel at the city's port. The finishes are forecasted for the end of March 2015. The boats cover some 23,000 nautical miles in a circumnavigation from Barcelona to Barcelona, putting the capes of Good Hope (South Africa), Leeuwin (Australia) and Horn (Chile) to port (their left) and the Antarctic to starboard (their right). During the three months of racing the skippers make their way through 12 climate zones and cross 3 oceans, as well as sailing in the Mediterranean Sea. Just two days after leaving Auckland, the teams have reached the Southern Ocean. Surfing the wake of ex-Cyclone Pam, they’ve been doing 20 knots of average speed, trying to get south before the next high-pressure system catches them. It’s fast, it’s wet, it’s wild. Here’s what it looks like from the sky.

The 20th anniversary of the Manly Yacht Club Helly Hansen Women's Challenge was held on March 22 with a record fleet participating.
