Aerials galore, as the heli footage is in from Cape Horn, and Kevin Escoffier goes up the (broken) mast of Dongfeng Race Team. Plus, the girls fix a problem aboard TeamSCA.

After breaking the upper part of the mast during Day 12 of Leg 5 to Itajaí, Dongfeng Race Team head to land while trying to simultaneously stabilise the precarious situation with their hanging mast.

This week, with Cyclone Pam bearing down on New Zealand, Race Management must make a difficult decision: whether or not to postpone the start of Leg 5. Meanwhile, we visit Team Vestas Wind’s Peter Wibroe who has returned to his PhD project in Cophenaghen, Denmark. And finally, the fleet is heading into the most isolated part of the planet: the Southern Ocean.

This part of the reef is harder to reach than the northern part (which can simply be dived from the jetty) and therefore not dived that often. Brett and Ron decided to explore the whole southern part of the reef, including the gap (where marker number 8 is located) - a dive that took us 86 minutes with a maximum depth of 18.3 metres in the gap (the average depth is only about 4-6 metres). The conditions were great with about 10 metres visibility and a little bit of surge. We dived it on a sunny Autumn day when there was a dodge tide (minimal tidal movement). The water temperature was 20 degrees Celsius. It's not often that you see something so spectacular as a full halo on the moon on a perfectly clear night! This was one such night and I just happened to capture it on our new Sony AX100 video camera on manual low-light settings... at F2.8 and shutter speed down to 8, you can see its a little 'stuttery', but still turned out great and certainly gets the point across of what a cool view it was! The incident happened 240 nautical miles west of Cape Horn at 0315 UTC on Monday, the crew reports that the mast broke above the third spreader (the top section of the mast).
