Leaving Gibraltar and sailing into the Med. The rock had one last trick though a 50 knot katabatic blast that put our man overboard system into action, don't worry it was just to retrieve the oars! Our misfortune continues though with a rope around the prop requiring a dive, at least the water's warm! Feels like the start of a new chapter. With the children leaving home we decided to sell our house in the UK and buy a boat in Holland. After two years refitting our Hans Christian 48T we have now set off a world voyage. We are retiring early because we want to attempt this voyage in good health and while we're fit and strong enough to really enjoy it. We will have to work a bit as we go until we can draw our pensions and we honestly don't know how well that will work. In our real lives we are journalists and filmmakers so it was only natural for use to document our travels by filming the journey. We aim to produce a professional standard vlog of the whole trip and try to give the viewer a real insight into what it's like to live and travel on a 48 foot sailboat. Our first aim is to sail South. After a winter getting iced in on the Markermeer in the Netherlands Judy insisted on warmer weather! So if you start from Episode 1 you will see us setting off from Eastbourne in the UK and travelling along the South Coast to Plymouth to enter a rally called ARC Portugal. Our first goal is to reach the Mediterranean and that means sailing across the infamous Bay of Biscay. This was a very good test for our boat as the bay lived up to it's fearsome reputation and split the whole fleet with a force 10 storm. Storm Miguel cut through our path and meant we had to run to mainland Spain to escape the massive seas and fearsome winds. Six boats couldn't make it in time and spent several very uncomfortable days at sea. The fleet had several broken boats, but thankfully no injured people. And this was just Episode 2! The excitement continued for the rest of our trip to the Med. Dolphins played in our bow wave, we sampled fantastic local foods and wines, great port in Porto! We found some beautiful anchorages and visit some wonderful historic places like Lisbon in Portugal, Cadiz in Spain and the fascinating port of Gibraltar. We will show you what it's like to winter in the Mediterranean, how much it all costs and give hints and tips on where to go how to save money with your boat and the places you stay. We are also talking to other sailors. After years of broadcasting journalism we know how to get peoples stories and we regularly film other sailors to show their boats and lifestyle as well as ours. We can always learn from others. Our long term plan is to spend a few years in the Mediterranean, on our list of place we want to visit are; Mallorca, Malta, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Italy, Tunisia, to name but a few! Voici la première portion d'une modeste présentation de nos 50 jours consécutifs passés à naviguer sur le Lac Champlain en 2019. Nous répétons le même scénario depuis plusieurs années, mais nous n'avions jamais pris le temps de documenter et surtout, de présenter nos expériences. Nous naviguons à 4 (2 adultes, 2 enfants en bas âge) sur un Hunter 30 Cherubini 1980 que nous avons remis à notre goût et à notre main ces dernières années. Nous tenons habituellement de 8 à 9 jours avec notre réservoir d'eau potable et le réservoir d'eaux noires. Cette année, nous avons fait de la voile chaque jour pour lesquels nous avons navigué. Nous avons parcouru une distance totale de 610 miles nautiques sur le fond et consommé 32 litres de diesel en 7 semaines. la plus grande distance parcourue sur le fond fut de 35,2 miles nautiques en près de 7 hrs 30. Il n'y a eu qu'une seule journée complète de pluie... et 5 jours de canicule. Notre vitesse de croisière se situe aux alentours de 5 noeuds. Telles ont été les conditions de notre séjour sur le lac en juillet et août 2019. Nous espérons inspirer ceux qui doutent du plaisir que l'on peut avoir à naviguer sur le Lac Champlain avec une jeune famille et partager quelques'uns de nos mouillages et des quelques moments de bonheurs passés sur l'eau. Soyez indulgents avec la qualité du montage, nous sommes plus que néophytes dans ce domaine. N'hésitez pas à poser des questions ou laisser un petit commentaire! With a father who went to 5 olympics as Flying Dutchman competitor initially and then as coach, Jon Bilger spent his early years around sailing. He bought is first boat after saving $250 and asking his dad to build him an optimist. In a P Class he then won New Zealand’s Tauranga Cup twice amongst a fleet of 120 dinghies that included young sailors such as Craig Monk. Then the move to the 470 and the Olympics followed along with competing in various European sailing regattas before the days of professional coaches. Jon was thrust into the Tag Heuer 1995 Americas Cup Team as navigator and it opened the door to his newly found passion for weather analysis. From there a decade with the Swiss based, Russell Coutts led, Alinghi Americas Cup syndicate, Jon was responsible for weather modelling for the 2003 and 2007 winning Americas Cup team before the loss in 2010 to Oracle. The weather technology developed for this team led to the model that Predict Wind is based upon today and is now used all over the world by everyday sailors.
