Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. That way the sun will help to show up shallow reef systems that are incorrectly or unbelievably missing from the Navionics charts. This evening we are breaking that rule. Sailing blind in the pitch black, unfamiliar territory. We are putting 100% trust in our GPS, and the electronic charts (mainly the Ovital, google maps setting which are more accurate). Not an ideal situation and not one we recommend. We wouldn't be in this mess if not for the fact that we left Makongai behind schedule. It's never good to have time pressures when sailing as it leads to choosing poor weather windows or pressing on when it's time to stop. But we are on a mission. Finn is flying in from NZ and we need to be there to welcome him home. On that note a huge thank you goes to Richard and Kylie Fulton who took Finn in to their home and their heart so that he could continue his schooling and rowing while in New Zealand. You guys rock! In 1997, after a disastrous Olympic rowing campaign, Rob decided to row a seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014, we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with our three children, Finn 17, Declan 15 and Ivan 12, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world, meet the locals and record our adventures. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Seconde étape de notre trip aux Açores : l'île de Faïal Célèbre pour sa cité de Horta dont le port accueille le départ et l'arrivée de nombreuses courses à la voile. Tous les grands navigateurs y sont passés. On retrouve notamment sur le port le Peter Café Sport : haut lieu de vie, animé nuit et jour avec son musée, sa boutique, son restaurant et surtout son bar et les fameux gins maison ! Plonger depuis Faïal, c'est s'assurer de voir des spécimens incroyables de requins et raies mantas. Il est possible d'observer des dauphins, baleines et cachalots qui trouvent en ces eaux un refuge dans leur migration ou simplement de quoi se nourrir. Faïal est un concentré de sensation ! In this video, we show you how simple it is to service our Eberspacher D4 Airtronic heater. Eberspachers are great until they stop working. Most of the time the issue is soot, particulates and the fuel/air mix being wrong. This is easily resolved by simply changing one or two bits and giving the unit a really good clean. A big thanks to Mark Hind who got us started on this. IF YOUR HEATER IS NOT A D2 OR D4 then look at this website for guidance before taking anything to bits. Older models are harder to service than the D4 shown. Also some Eberspachers exist that were made specifically for vans and these are sold on ebay. When SAILING LIFE Becomes A SLEEP DEPRIVED LIFE Due To HIGH WIND WARNINGS - Ep. 35 In this episode of Sailing Zephyr we are met with the decision of what to do with Zephyr as another storm is set to hit the island of Mallorca. We had been riding out storm after storm with not much rest and to see a MEDICANE (Mediterranean Hurricane) appear on our weather applications sent a shiver through our spines. A spot became available in the Public Marina and we decided to take it! However, who knew what was in store for us EVEN at the marina. With gusts well over 50 knots and the high winds hitting the marina sideways it was some of the scariest nights we have had on our boat. Two boats down from us gets struck by lightning and both their stern lines snap in the storm at 2am in the morning! It is absolute chaos. High winds continue for 2 days straight with no rest for the wicked. Eventually, it calms down enough for us to get off the boat and to have visitors aboard. James gets back to work on sorting and re fitting a new alternator and I get ready to leave Palma de Mallorca and fly to Cyprus. How could I forget.....HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL OUR AMERICAN FRIENDS! Take a Sight of the sun with your sextant. 2. Get your Geographical Position from the Air Almanac. 3. Select an Apparent Position along a line of latitude. 4. About 6000 cruisers cross the Atlantic Ocean each year. And many of them stop in Cape Verde before the long passage across the ocean.
