This is the channel video! Support: Patreon - www.patreon.com/CaptainBarry/ Hi, Barry here! I'm the First Mate on Providence Sail Cargo and Captain of SV Dagon! I want to share my life at sea with everyone. Come find out what happens on a 1903 built Gaff Rigged Tall Ship, and a 1956 built cutter rigged Sailboat! As First Mate aboard Providence, I travel weekly on a 4 day cargo run through the PNWs southern gulf Islands, doing that, I meet amazing people, sail a ton, seeing amazing things and my duties are to do maintenance projects, rigging and do my best to keep the boat ship shape! All of which I will share with you! and on MY boat, Dagon, I just fix broken things, break things and have wild sailing adventures! See what it takes to sail and maintain two wooden boats, a Tall ship from 1903 and a Sail Boat from 1956. Hopefully we all learn something! I love what I do and hope you will follow along as we try to push for greener alternatives for shipping local goods and passengers aboard Providence and have good adventures aboard Dagon, and any other boat I happen to end up on.

In the last episode, we broke a plank. No big deal though, as with everything we've come up on in the project, the key is just finding a way forward. So we cut the broken end off of the plank and figured out a way to rig it so that we could steam the ends in and get them close to what they were going to be bending to before we actually fit the plank. This process, using a pot of water, burner, some tubing and a length of vacuum seal bag worked fantastically well. Once the plank was warm, we just left the bag in place and just started clamping the plank in place. This way, there was no worries about the plank cooling down as we tried to put it in place after taking it out of a steam box. In this episode, Steve and Joe also head out on a road trip to pick up some of the donations we received for our trip to Costa Rica to help out SAILCARGO in February. Thank you again to everyone that donated items and has helped out with this side project. It has been very much appreciated and we can't wait to see how they react to the amount of tools we managed to gather up for them. Finally, as promised, we are rounding out our merchandise for the holiday season. We have insulated travel mugs ready (in Black and Silver) as well as some small pins with our logo for smaller dollar item. These are up on our website along with the shirts and the sweatshirts (https://www.acorntoarabella.com/merchandise). If you would like your items in time for the holidays, please make sure that you order before December 19th, 2019.

We are buying a boat that we haven't seen in 6 years! I mean, we remember it being nice. But who the hell knows?!? It's been in the jungle. We are, however, so excited about it, we want to give you a tour....kinda....from what we remember.

Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. 2019 saw France experience its hottest June since records began. The French media dubbed it "an extreme weather event" a "killer heatwave" & warned people to stay indoors. We however had no choice than to motor through it and try to find some respite from the ever increasing temperatures on our boat. The conditions are insane and with no AC, we are suffering. With no prospect of cooling down, we make a break for the Atlantic ocean and try and cover as many miles as possible. Hope you enjoy the episode! So, crazy as it may seem, I go for a spear and see lots of big fish that are too big to shoot but I get onto one that is just right with a bit of a plan that actually works....a first for the vlog something that I thought up actually worked. I have dinner sorted so I then play hide and seek with the wildlife. I lose track of time in the water, pretty common for me (sometimes I lose 8 hours in the water wooohoooo), but get wiken out of my reverie by a bolt of lightning. I look up and see a storm bearing down on me so it is time to skiddadle and get the flock out of here but it is a bit tricky because the light has gone and I need to get through the reef and then I need to get back into the storm to get back to my boat. These storms can blow up to 60 knots and it is not a good feeling to be outside the reef being blown further out at sea when I should be back at the boat. It's a race and I make it by about 5 minutes - plenty of time. But the show is not over, the cell turns into and electrical storm and I have lightning all around me for hours with a few really close calls. It's all good - until its not and in the end it's all ok. Bloody let down really. If I was lightning, I would hit the tallest thing in the area. Margarida is arriving soon and the boat is a mess, well not really a mess according to guys but to Margarida it's a pig sty so lots of cleaning to be done to make it like the last porridge - just right but another storm threatens to stuff up my washing schedule so I need to get the clothes and cushions in before it hits. A huge thank you to those who help keep our boat afloat by supporting our creative process via Patreon. You can be part of the crew for less than the price of a coffee. https://www.patreon.com/CruisingKiwis The Captains sailing log - we lost our floating home We have just returned from a trip to Mana Island, close to Musket Cove, in The Mamanuca chain of islands, here in the west of Fiji. While we were there we reminisced about an incident that occurred to us, just of the Northern tip of the island back in October of 2015. This incident so nearly ended in disaster for us, Javelot and our two guests, Rachel's sisters, who had just joined us aboard that morning. We weren't making vlogs back then, but we thought we would share this cautionary tale from the Captains log with you now. Music Cricket Farm - Bending Spoons DJ Quads - Running David Mumford - Ball and Chain Who are we? In 1997, after a disastrous Olympic rowing campaign, Rob decided to row a seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014, we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with our three children, Finn 17, Declan 15 and Ivan 12, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world, meet the locals and record our adventures. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill Never stop wandering, never stop wondering. #TheCruisingKiwis

Back lion aux Chesterfields! Cette fois, nous nous engageons pour quarante-huit heures de navigation. Un peu plus avertis, Black Lion a su modérer les inquiétudes de mon capitaine. Je le sens serein et sa prudence à un effet lénifiant sur moi. Crédulement, nous espérions qu’à la sortie de l’atoll la houle mollisse ; nous lui en aurions témoigné toute notre gratitude mais nous nous apercevons bien que ses intentions ne sont pas de nous contenter. Les hauts plateaux doivent certainement provoquer des perturbations dont les courants se réjouissent, associés au vent, la mer pourtant pondérée déferle en se brisant écumante. Rebutante, quand on la croit adoucit, elle s’empresse d’ébranler le bateau d’un coup fourbe. Les ilots sont à vue, un monocoque va emprunter la même passe que nous, lui, quitte les Chesterfields. D’après les lectures que nous avons faites, la fréquentation de cet atoll est faible, nous ne devrions pas voire énormément de plaisanciers par ici et hormis celui-ci, seul le catamaran où se trouve notre fils fait face aux ilots du mouillage. Les cartes sont fausses, la limpidité de l’eau trompeuse et les patates nombreuses. Nous nous écartons un maximum des masses qui nous semble être moins profondes, prudemment nous nous approchons. Nous espérions les voir en navigation et elles sont là, juste pour nous ! Les baleines ! Subjugués par ces géantes des mers venues mettre bas, leurs appels est bien trop tentant pour ne pas nous en approcher encore un peu. Depuis l’annexe, Jonathan plonge avec son attirail photo, le moment est tellement excitant qu’il en oubli le shark que nous venons de voir. Cyril est plus réticent mais tel un rémora collé à son dinghy, il finit par suivre sa progéniture pendant que mon courage me dicte de surveiller la surface de l’eau ! Ils sont tout près des deux belles quand un coup de caudale les en éloignent de plusieurs mètres ; leurs palmes ne peuvent rivaliser avec l’appendice puissant des colosses et en un instant, ils sont largués dans le bleu profond. Sans cibles à vue, l’ardeur est différente et je vois dans la précipitation de mes hommes à revenir à la petite embarcation, qu’un scenario dents de la mer leur traverse probablement l’esprit. De jour en jour, nos rapports avec les cétacés paraissent s’intimiser. Quand aucune ridule vient bouleverser la platitude de l’atoll, le meilleur est à venir ; les éclaboussures se voient alors de loin et les dorsales noires se distingues très nettement. La plénitude est totale. Dans nos kayacs, nous avançons tranquillement, sans bruit. Elles nous ont vu, nous nous observons mutuellement. Elles sont au nombre de quatre, paradent maintenant autours de nous. Elles sont si proches que Cyril peut les filmer depuis son mono-place à pédales. Plus loin, une mère et son petit ; les marques sur le corps du nouveau-né nous font penser que ce sont les mêmes individus que nous avons déjà photographiés. Si c’est bien le cas, chaque groupe évolue dans une zone bien délimité. Les jeunes avec leurs mamans sont au plus près des bancs de sable. Dans peu d’eau, il semble que les génitrices apprennent à leur bébé à nager et à remonter à la surface pour rejeter l’air de leur évent. Et les autres, futures mamans attendent dans des profondeurs plus im-portantes de vingt mètres. Quand ce n’est pas les baleines, ce sont les dauphins, curieusement plus craintifs, eux aussi mettent bas ;

During the 2019 Baltimore TrawlerFest, Jeff was the moderator Friday for “Cruisers Perspectives: A Town Hall Meeting.” The panel was full of experienced boaters many who also have careers in the marine industry telling stories and offering advice. Opening the discussion was Erik Kunz who grew up sailing in New Jersey and now works as the senior product manager for Furuno. John Clayman also grew up sailing in New England, has done multiple Bermuda races and is the president of Seaton yachts. Steve Zimmerman, owner of Zimmerman marine, told us about turning down law school to remain in the yachting industry which has led to the creation of five boat yards. Chris Parker also sat on the panel as our resident weather guru and gave us insights into his forecasts. Rudy Sechez, of Trawler Training and Anchoring Consultants, told us about his journey which started out by making his own boat and eventually building several others. Finally, the man who inspires all of us and shared some of his sage wisdom, we were privileged to have Bruce Kessler, who with his wife Joan, became the first trawler circumnavigators. This short film includes introductions from our panelists and a couple questions asked during the Q & A. After the Friday panel, we have clips from Jeff’s Saturday classes: Dialing-In Your Trawler and Offshore Essentials. Trawler Fest is such a well-rounded experience; you can walk the docks, talk the talk, step aboard and sit in on class to improve your knowledge. We would like to thank Erik Kunz, John Clayman, Steve Zimmerman, Chris Parker, Rudy Sechez, Donna Aschheim and Bruce Kessler, for their participation in this video. Benedikt Clauberg's Swiss First 47.7 Kali finished the RORC Transatlantic Race on 11 December, completing the 3,000nm race in 18 days 08 hours 28 mins and 18 secs. Kali was competing for the second year in a row and beat their finish time for 2018 by nearly 18 hours. “It feels great to beat our time from last year as we have been working hard on the performance of the boat,” commented Kali's Benedikt Clauberg. “This year was much harder due to a lot of squalls, but we have a very enthusiastic team who wanted to change sails even when they were tired, and that made a difference. It feels like coming home when we arrived in Grenada because we know Charlotte (Fairhead) and all the C&N Port Louis Marina staff.”
