Many dared to go on a little hike with me in Bahía Rincon and of course we got a little lost. Unfortunately, it was already time to say goodbye again to Manny... My Kayak got stolen in Golfito and after some dull and angry days of trying to get it back, I decided to take up anchor and head to the surfspot Pavones for some days of relaxation and fun. Enjoy & Ahoy, Nike & Karl
Our new Southerly 480 sailboat is ready for the water! Distant Shores III is transported from the shipyard to Saxon Wharf to splash creating havoc with the traffic in downtown Southampton. Then it snows! The mast is stepped on the boat and Paul carries out a traditional Coin Ceremony for good luck on upcoming voyages. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Principal photography by Paul Shard. Our last morning at Ascension Island has us reminiscing about all of our incredible memories that were made in the middle of the ocean. But as we sail off the morning, our attention turns towards BRASIL and what this wild and unknown country has in store for us! With a swift sail off the mooring, we begin the last leg of our Atlantic Crossing- a 2,300 nautical mile sail to Ilhabela, just south of Rio. But I think Neptune wanted us to earn this one a bit more, and so our auto pilot malfunctioned at the last moment which meant we would have over 2 weeks straight of hand steering. But hand steering to Southern Cross didn't end up being quite so bad ;) We tried a bit of a different approach to the filming and editing of these four passage videos for you guys, so we hope you enjoy the themes you'll find in each one! Mad Love from the CREW! Subscribe at http://youtube.com/svdelos This is our story, a story of three souls sailing around the world. It is a story about sailing and travel and adventure. But it's also a story about meeting amazing people and making life long friends. It's a story of people living their lives in an alternate way, in close connection with the beautiful people and amazing planet that we call home. Our experience has affected us so profoundly we want to share it, hoping that others may find inspiration to follow their dreams and do what they love. For more sailing around the World Action! There are differing ideas out there on what time of year is best to harvest trees for lumber. In our case, winter was ideal. Due to the cold and the lack of heating in the boathouse, we aren't able to work with certain materials such as paint, epoxy, fairing and bedding compounds, etc. All of which we need now in order to fair and shape the keels in preparation to bolting them together. We therefore harvested a whole new load of trees! Event information: - 2018 Maine Boatbuilder's Show: March 23rd to 25th in Portland Maine, USA at the Portland Sports Complex (512 Warren Ave, Portland, ME 04103). Fri & Sat 10am to 6pm, Sun 10am to 4pm. We will be speaking from 2:45pm to 3:30pm right before closing. - The 8th annual Jamestown Distributors Spring Tent Sale! This one-day-only event will be held rain or shine from 8 AM to 3 PM on Saturday April 14th, at 17 Peckham Drive, Bristol RI. - Acorn to Arabella Open House and Birthday Extravaganza! Same as last year, we will be hosting an open house to show off our progress (keels should be bolted together by then!) and meet some of our fans. Plenty of good food and good people! The event will be from 12noon to 7pm on Saturday May 5th. See website for more information and address http://www.acorntoarabella.com --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Q. How do you plan a passage through pirates and typhoons? A. Carefully! Liz rolls up her sleeves and gets down to some serious research while passage planning through pirates, monsoons and typhoons across 7000 miles... CONSIDERATIONS FOR WORLD PASSAGE PLANNING: 1. Weather and currents 2. Political situation 3. Security threats WHY ARE WE HEADING EASTBOUND ACROSS THE PACIFIC? Most vessels travel east to west, and you may have seen other sailing channels doing exactly that. This is because the trade winds, currents and weather patterns make it the natural and more comfortable choice for a circumnavigation. Heading east is more difficult because all of these things are against you. With detailed planning, it is possible, and a number of boats do it every year. WEATHER The most important aspect when planning a passage of this length is to work with known weather systems. Not taking into consideration all the local cruising we will have, the total miles for a direct passage is: From Tioman to Alaska approximately 6,500 miles. From Tioman to BC, it's around 7,500 miles. FOUR CRUCIAL STAGES WHERE WEATHER WINDOWS DICTATE OUR TIMINGS: 1. Tioman to Borneo 2. Borneo to Philippines 3. Philippines to Japan 4. Japan to PNW IN A NUTSHELL: 1. Tioman to Borneo via Anambas – Depart June/August 2. Remain in Borneo, cruising Sarawak and Sabah for around seven months 3. Borneo to Philippines – Depart March 4. Remain in Philippines for two months 5. Philippines to Japan – Depart May 6. Remain in Japan, cruising for around two months 7. Japan to PNW – Depart July/August SO WHAT COULD CHANGE? Anything and everything! Keep following us to find out what happens next... Don't forget to follow the boat! After almost 2 years in the Atlantic we will arrive to a new ocean. The biggest ocean in the world, the Pacific! Together with our linehandlers we transit one of the wonders of the modern world, the Panama Canal. Our friends on SY Carpe Mare have written a guide with all the information about the canal transit (find the document in the bottom of the post): http://www.carpe-mare.se/2018/01/12/panama-canal/ This is the guide book we use: http://amzn.to/2HvilA9 We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us. WANT MORE? I get the old school beer cooler to work, abandon my 2nd attempt at leaving the San Blas and eat a cool chilli, give water to the local indians, have a good moan and bitch about this and that and then fight for control in a violent squall. #sailing#cruising#singlehanded sailor Thank you for watching this episode, please give us a thumbs up and subscribe. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. We finally set sail for Florida. We drop our lines and head out of Charleston and into the open Ocean. Our planned, calm shake down cruise starts off perfectly. At the second round of the SuperFoiler Grand Prix held on the waters of Corio Bay off Geelong we took the opportunity to chat with Bill Macartney, the CEO of the SuperFoiler Grand Prix about the development of the machine, the marketing and broadcast of the concept and the possible production of a simpler version of the boat for the recreational sailor.
