Boats and planes carry one or several Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, EPIRB, for safety purposes. Batteries should be replaced every 5 years for safety. But all these discarded batteries are still quite charged after 5 year of shelf life, not being used. Why toss these without using them first? I built a simple flashlight that happemned to last 5 years ... until I had to replace my EPIRB battery again. This design is easy to build as well as very inexpensive. One of the failures to most flashlights is internal loss of conductivity within metal conductors used bweteen light bulb, switch and battery. It results in low battery voltage getting to the light bulb, even tho the batteries are full and thus the flashlight goes right in the trash. Use good quality wire to connect the elements of this flashlight. Simple and inexpensive switches and LED lights can be substituted in this DIY project. Make sure that battery voltage (12v in my example) match the rated voltage of your LED light. A more powerfull LED will result in shorter battery life and vice-versa. These long life EPIRB batteries are NOT rechargeable so it is a one time use ... perhaps 5 years like my last flashlight J

Bayliner's design team has out done themselves again! For a 24' boat this boat has space to spare: The cockpit layout is second to none in this size boat and even up to 26' boats. Plus, the space in the upper deck is very comfortable and usable! Below deck you get a very bright, and cleanly finished interior which is purpose built for low maintenance. Alcohol/electric stove and microwave in the galley with sink, and a shower set-up in the head are great amenities. The Mercruiser engine in this boat was rebuilt at the end of last season and is ready to go with only a couple of hours on it! Not often one would find a Bravo 3 leg on a boat like this, but it is a notable upgrade and will give you better cruising economy and much better tight space manoeuvring. It is only possible to walk to the lighthouse at low tide. The space surrounding the Grótta Lighthouse is a bird sanctuary and off limits to tourists between May and July. It is a superb place to watch the Northern Lights. The lighthouse is active. This aerial tour was made using a DJI Phantom 2 Quadcopter with Zenmuse Gimbal and Fatshark FPV goggles. The pace has been maintained and this week we concentrated on the removal of both the mizzen and the main masts. We also had the electrician, the mechanic and the plumber on board to discuss a number of projects. Mast Removal The biggest event this week was the removal of the two masts. We had to pre-book the crane so it was paramount that we disconnected all electrical cables from the base of the masts. The mizzen is deck-stepped (as in it stops at the deck) but the main is through-hull, so getting to those cables involved pulling up floor boards and rummaging through dirty bilges. Un, our project manager, coordinated the removal. He used the two carpenters, Ton and Tui, and Lek, the Burmese lad who has been grinding our hull. The first task was to send Lek up the mizzen to undo the triatic, which is the cable that connects the main to the mizzen. Fortunately Lek is a young whippersnapper so winching him was quite easy! After this the crane was then able to hoist him up again to put a slip around the mizzen, connected to large hooks at the end of the crane. The mizzen was fairly straightforward and easy to drop into a horizontal position on two oil drums. The main was a little more problematic, but only because two rubber wedges, used to hold the mast in position when upright, had to be removed. I don’t think they’d moved for twenty years so getting them out took about 15 minutes. Once removed the crane hoisted the main whilst Ton stayed down below to ensure the cables came out ok. The two masts were then masterfully positioned at the back of the yard by a crane operator who deserves some recognition for his deftness behind the joystick. Moving a 20m metal stick in between parked boats was no mean feat. Mast Removal In Glorious High Def! There is a tiny island in Panama where 3 spider monkeys live that once were part of a research station. They are quite cheeky, walk like humans and if you are not careful, they will take off with your camera. It feels so good to finally explore the beautiful country Panama a little bit and not just be stuck in boat refit projects all of the time. Together with my friend Pierrique I go for a boat ride, we spear fish some fresh lobster that our local friend prepares for us and we ride through the jungle on horseback. This is how I imagined the cruising lifestyle to be like and I am extremely grateful for these happy moments between boat jobs to fill up my energy level! El método empleado fue analógico: Cuenta de golpes rítmicos del motor a lo largo de un minuto. Otros detalles (videos 1 y 2): Video 1: Al levantar el motor se ve que el agua está hirviendo, y sin embargo inmediatamente cesa. Video 2: Se oyen leves petardeos de vapor, por lo que se deduce que el motor forma una ligera estanqueidad con el calentador (la irregularidad del calentador me hacen sospechar que se forma una fina película de agua en la zona de contacto, que haría posible dicho sellado estanco). Si admitimos entonces que el motor y el quemador forman una pequeña olla a presión, la ebullición se vería retrasada hasta por encima de los 100°C. Puesto que se oye un burbujeo, se deduce que hay ebullición, y se deduce que el calentador está a -100ºC. Este hecho coincide con el burbujeo que se aprecia en el video 1 instantes después de levantar el motor. ¿Por qué entonces cesa la ebullición al levantar el motor? Debería incrementarse, puesto que al levantar el motor la presión disminuye (desaparece el efecto olla). Las dos causas posibles son: - un súbito descenso de temperatura causado por el contacto con el aire frío exterior. -un incremento súbito de la ebullición, que desprende insatntáneamente una cantidad de vapor tal, que el agua restante no conserva energía suficiente para evaporarse. Un fenómeno similar se observa tras hervir agua a temperatura ambiente en el vacío: inmediatamente después de la ebullición, el agua restante ha perdido toda energía latente y se congela a temperatura ambiente. Se pueden buscar referencias en youtube, como ésta, en inglés: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOYgdQp4euc En ella se explica cómo la energía de ebullición proviene del agua misma, por lo que finalmente el agua se queda sin energía que la mantenga líquida. Personalmente creo que en este caso se trata de una mezcla de ambos fenómenos.

En este video el motor está acelerando constantemente; aún no ha alcanzado el equilibrio, por lo que se le ve girando a menos de 120rpm, que son las rpm que estaba dando en condiciones normales.

En este video se pretende medir la diferencia de temperatura de trabajo pero el foco caliente muestra un dato erroneo: la lectura es inferior a 100°C pero en los videos 1 y 2 se dedujo que hay al menos 100°C (explicación en video 2) De nuevo se escucha el burbujeo de la ebullición (justo antes de levantar el motor se oye tenuemente; se oye mejor en el video 2 en la segunda mitad); y de nuevo ésta cesa al levantar el motor. Sin embargo esta vez dura un poco más, quizá debido precisamente a que al levantar el motor disminuye la presión superficial en el fluído, disminuyendo el punto de ebullición hasta los característicos 100ºC y aumentando por tanto la intensidad del burbujeo. ________________________________________________________________________ A demanda popular se hará un nuevo video con los aspectos que la mayoría prefiera. El kit es magnífico y contiene todos los materiales, salvo los pegamentos (se requiere pegamento de resina de epoxy, y pegamento universal tipo cola de contacto; no cola blanca). Requiere manos hábiles. Al menos requiere experiencia en algún hobby manual como origami, pintado de soldados de plomo, modelismos de construcción varios, etc.
