My DIY (Do It Yourself) sailboat restoration is in full swing. In this video, I though briefly on cost. Both the purchase price and what it costs to keep Athena up on the hard here in Denmark. This video is two days early (i usually purplish on Sundays). I took a couple of half days this week because the office was completely empty. The video is from one of those days. NB! Please know that all cursing in this video was purely an attempt at humor. I love my new boat!

Nikki gets a wild hair to change the entire look of our sailboat cockpit by painting the cushions...that's right, I said PAINT! Read the Entire Post on our Website: http://bit.ly/diy-paint-cushion Connect With Us & Get Involved on Patreon: http://bit.ly/patreon-wynn Subscribe to our channel for more videos: http://bit.ly/gwtw-youtube Nikki didn't like the traditional look of the outdoor cushions on our new-to-us catamaran sailboat, so she looked into every option. Pay the pros a whopping $5k+ or buy the fabric and do it yourself for $1k+ Neither sounded like a good option for our budget and timeframe...so she turned to the internet. Impi is a catamaran sailing around the world. We have returned to the water after a refit of Sd 60 saildrives and other minor repairs, anti-fouling etc. Now back in the water we sail to the Bay Of Islands to watch weather for our next departure. With no weather window opening, we delay our departure for other islands and are fortunate to meet our daughter in Auckland, friends we last saw in Cuba visit Impi, and receive some favours from folks who follow our travels on media. It was a beautiful experience to meet a young family who we had never met (in the flesh) and who have followed our travels over the internet now join us for a very memorable day sailing in the Bay Of Islands. We also sneak in some interesting maintenance issues around our Onan generator.

The V™ block is the highest performing, most efficient block Harken has ever offered. Engineers chose extremely strong, extremely lightweight materials to build block components-3D molded carbon sideplates, titanium races, and captive titanium roller bearings. Then they combined the axial and thrust loads into a single bearing set of angled titanium rollers. The result is a 12% decrease in the number of unique components for an incredibly powerful, but simple lightweight block that surpasses any other block we've ever tested in efficiency at high loads, while spinning freely at low loads for smooth easing in light air. "To eliminate lead times for customers, we decided to transform our highest performing Grand-Prix blocks. Where previously they have always been custom products, now they will be production products available on-the-shelf," says Mark Wiss, Director of New Business Development. "We increased the high-load efficiency and greatly improved low-load release responsiveness. We named it the V block because the angled inner races and sheave surfaces are 'V' shaped." V blocks are easy to disassemble for inspection and maintenance. They are available in four (4) sizes dedicated to maximum working loads of 1500 kgf, 3000 kgf, 5000 kgf, 6500 kgf. Sideplates are also available in anodized aluminum. Learn more: https://www.harken.com/en/shop/v-blocks/

In this video, there is a short update on the progress of my osmosis treatment. I get started on removing the old bronze thru hulls. Last but not least I put up a makeshift boom tent. This video didn't turn out the way I had planned. I had to scrap a lot of the footage due to wind noise even though I have a good quality "dead cat" (windsock) on my Røde VideoMic Go. There were very high gusts of wind today! Fear not I've already remedied the situation. There is a very cool wireless lavaliere mic set on its way :) YouTube channels mentioned in this video: SV Seeker: https://www.youtube.com/user/submarineboat/videos

Join me on my longest solo sail so far — a 400-nautical-mile journey from Roatán, Honduras to Isla Mujeres, Mexico. As a woman sailing alone through the Caribbean Sea, I faced some serious challenges and beautiful moments alike. This was a solo sailing adventure I’ll never forget. It was my birthday at sea, and just when I thought I might feel alone, a little bird landed on board and kept me company. But the ocean had other plans too — low on fuel and with my batteries running down, I tried to start the engine and discovered it had pulled air. With no one around, I had to bleed the fuel lines at sea — not exactly how I planned to celebrate! But that’s the real life sailing story of a solo sailor girl. As the wind picked up on the final stretch, I made great speed toward land, eventually reaching Isla Mujeres just before sunrise. From engine troubles to moments of quiet reflection, this solo ocean passage reminded me why I love the cruising life solo, even when it’s tough. If you're into offshore sailing solo, sailing mishaps at sea, or what it's really like to be a female sailor solo on a Reinke Super 10, this one’s for you. Facing the challenges of solo sailing as a female sailor, I navigated the highs and lows of single-handed sailing while tackling DIY boat repair projects, from engine fixes to full boat refits on a budget. My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. If you’re interested in remote sailing adventures, authentic sailing stories, and the realities of living on a sailboat, this channel offers a glimpse into the world of DIY projects, the sailing lifestyle, and life’s transformative moments on the water. Impi is sailing around the world and in this series we share our 'haul out time' in New Zealand. This particular video includes some work done in the boat yard at NORSAND as well as the launch of Impi back into the water and many various chores around the maintenance of our boat, the installation of the SD 60 Yanmar sail drives after removing the SD 50, A complex repair to our dinghy, upgrading our genoa car tracks and much more. After the boat yard we visit Whangarei Town Basin Marina and then set off for the beautiful Bay Of Islands. Installing aluminum toe rails on a 1968 Alberg 30. We used clear anodized slotted toe rails supplied by Crest Aluminum, item #2807CL. They have holes for 1/4" flat head machine screws on 4" centers going through the hull to deck joint. Since the original teak toe rails were missing on this boat, the switch to aluminum saved time over new teak, are more functional, stronger, and will be low maintenance.

First up, we pulled in and enjoyed Carriacou for a few days, meeting some of the "locals" and struggling with a steep, uphill climb. Next, we moved down to Grenada proper in order to do a haul out at Grenada Marine to check on our mini-keel repair and install underwater lights. Final preparations for the trip to bring my new sailboat back home to Denmark. In this video: some more diesel engine maintenance and a quick initial look at the CTEK Battery Sense. NB! This video is 2 weeks delayed. I had no way of uploading it. Sorry guys! I'm already back home in Denmark and will soon start editing the video from the trip back home. The natural beauty of the island was stunning and was topped off with a trip to the Emerald Pool and waterfall. In this video, I change the air filter, and the oil on the Volvo Penta D2-40F aboard my new sailboat Athena. I also hook up my AIS transponder from Digital Yacht (Digital Yacht AIT2000) to the chart plotter (Standard Horizon CP300i). As a small bonus, there is a demonstration of the very advanced fuel gauge system here aboard Athena ;) BHA = Bringing Home Athena ;)

The internet was a fantastic resource which was always there to help with the rebuild process, from sourcing supplies to researching new skills there was almost nothing that could not be solved with a simple search. As with everything there is always an exception to the rule, no matter how hard we searched we could not find any detail on how to replace the rudder bearing on a Mumm 36. So while this post is a simple one it should solve the problem for the next team to take on a Mumm 36 rebuild. So how do you replace the the rudder bearings on a Mumm 36 ? The first part of the process was quite easy, undoing all the tiller mounts gives you easy assess to the top bearing. With a little bit of pressure the top bearing was remove,d as it was above the waterline it was wasn't in bad condition considering how much movement there was in the shaft and that it was 20 years old. Now for the tricky part, how to get at the bottom bearing :- After trying to unscrew the bottom bracket from every angle it became apparent that it was fixed in and would not unscrew. At this point we followed my dads approach to DIY, if a first you don't succeed get a bigger hammer. We started with a small hammer and some wooden blocks tapping away from the top of the shaft. Still no movement. The hammer got bigger until we ended up with a 15 pound sledge hammer with a custom made wood cover to protect the top of the shaft as we swung ever harder. Still no movement ! It was at his point a new approach was needed, with cutting blade in hand an incision was made round the metal brackets under the boat. We were a little worried at first but as we completed the circular cut it became obvious that this was the only way it was ever coming out. The bottom mounts were epoxied into the hull, a neat circle around the bottom bracket and it easily slipped out. Once out we hoped that like the top bearing we could clean it up replace some ball bearing before putting it back in. It soon became obvious that would not be the case, with the bottom bearing under the water line it was heavily corroded, so much so we could not even get it off the shaft. We had to go a little easier with this part of the removal process as we wanted try and reuse it, so the sledge hammer was not an option at this point. As custom jack mount was built and after applying nearly 5 tonnes of pressure per square inch the bearing was finally persuaded to leave the shaft that it had become so attached too. Sadly the bottom bearing became the first item that could not be restored and a new one would have to be purchased. A quick search on the internet created the next issue. Harken no longer produced the bearings, luckily it did not take too long to find out that Jeta had taken over production post Harken stopping. While the bearing was quite different in design it was made to the same specification and would be as good as a like for like replacement. Once the new bearing arrived things went back together relatively easily, with only a few adjustments required to the shaft height to ensure the correct alignment with the new bottom bearing. After all the work trying to get it out it was great to know that when we epoxied it back into place, that the new design allowed for easy removal for future cleaning as only the aluminium holder is now fixed. If we can clean it regularly is should last at at least 30 years before the next replacement is required.

BUMPER EPISODE! Covering summer in the UK and return to Thailand in September where Jamie receives a distress call. A number of maintenance jobs have to be finished before we head off to our first anchorage... We catch up with our families--Jamie's in Saffron Walden and Liz's in Rye. We take in a maritime festival and make new friends at Brighton Marina before heading back to SY Esper in Phuket. ****************************** Be one of the good guys: https://www.patreon.com/followtheboat Be the first to know: http://eepurl.com/B9Ykn Subscribe to our youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_... Blog: http://www.followtheboat.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/followtheboat Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/followtheboat ****************************** We were lucky enough to be invited to Brighton by Lorraine and Marco Hof, who we had connected with on-line. They keep their yacht in the marina, so we went along to say hello. SY Pension Games is an Oyster 406, and since Esper is an Oyster 435 we couldn’t resist a look round. It was a beautiful English summer day, so we made a night of it. Jamie flew back to Thailand first and was greeted by a very fat and contented Millie-the-cat who had been spoilt by her wonderful carers while we were away. The next day he picked up a distress signal on Ch 16...but it seemed that no-one else could hear the man calling for medical assistance. We have a powerful VHF radio on SY Esper, so Jamie offered to help, and after an hour of increasingly desperate conversations medical aid was sent to the unfortunate ship. Keen to get out and sail, we had to go through more than the usual checks and services. The canvas work had been destroyed in the bad storms Jamie encountered on Ko Tarutao, the fuel pipe was leaking...and that watermaker needed some attention. Finally, we got away to our first anchorage, leaving all those stresses and troubles behind us. At least for a while... This is Liz's first attempt at editing a full length followtheboat sailing log! ****************************** This episode features some of the best music so far in our sailing series. Pretty much just what the title says it is. Its not our idea, we have just copied it from others but its a really cheap and simple way of covering your windows that requires no holes to be drilled or fixings of any kind to be installed.

We hauled SV Avalon out of the water for a week in the boatyard, where she will undergo routine inspection and maintenance, including bottom-scrub/anti-fouling... sort of like going to the dentist or something. We'll be back in the water in a week or so, and then do serious planning and provisioning for our passage north to Fiji.

I have always wanted to have a push button electric head on my sailboat. My guests don't like or know how to pump the head no matter how many times I try to explain how. They just don't get it. Prior to doing this project I flushed out the holding tank with freshwater around 5 times.
