Support us at https://www.patreon.com/sailingintofreedom I am an Australian guy trying to live on a small footprint. I take in crew wherever I go and go where the wind takes me. I catch and gather food wherever I can. I have no fridge or freezer, no oven, no aircon, no generator, no water heater, no watermaker ... ( and some may say no idea) So if you want to see some interesting places and some interesting crew then follow me. In this episode I make my way out of Wyoming and the snow and down into Utah to visit an amazing outdoor piece of earthen artwork, the Spiral Jetty and camp by the Great Salt Lake. Really changing the pace and vibe of the last few days. Music by Ambalance (https://soundcloud.com/ambalance) Really appreciate the support, check out the Patreon for more access and perks: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel to world. I make travel vlogs about my Vanlife, sharing vanlife ideas, vanlife tips, and travel diaries. Instagram: @Finding_Simon Snapchat: Finding_Simon Twitter: @FindingSimon Donations: paypal.me/ShelbyandSimon Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon Merchandise: http://simonstiles.com/finding-simon/ :::::::FAQ::::::: - How do you afford to travel constantly? A: I live in a van, which certainly cuts costs down but still I need to make some money in order to afford to continue, currently I make 90% of my income through working as a photographer/videographer. I regularly work for Airbnb as a real estate photographer and I also take on bigger commercial contracts whenever I get the chance. - How much does it cost? I spend on average $2000 travelling, most of which is gas, some repairs, food, and on average less than $200 on any eating out, shopping or extra curricular expenditures. I make $200 a month from YouTube and $400 from Patreon. The rest I make from my work. - What camera do you use? Sony A7ii, Nikon D810, Sony RX100 iii, DJI Phantom 3 Advanced, Rode Videomic with Deadcat, Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, Underwater Housing, tripods and lights. - What is your van? 1992 Dodge B350 Travelhome with the 5.9L TBI gas engine. I spent $3500 buying it and so far another $9000 in repairs upgrades and maintenance. - What're your plans? Travel forever. The Arctic this summer, Asia next winter, Sailboat the world after. I want to see this whole world, and I'm playing it all by ear. - How do you find all these cool places? To gain access to my complete research you need to hit me up on Patreon, but here's a few sites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/ https://www.campendium.com/ http://www.atlasobscura.com/ https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - What do you do for Internet? I use coffeeshops and libraries to upload episodes a few at a time, I also use my wifi antenna (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5T9lNM8Mukk&t=2s) and a data package on my phone (10GB) - How do you live in a van with a dog? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with my dog anyways, especially if it's warm out in the middle of the day. If I have to leave him inside the van I cover the front seats so he can't climb up and stare out the window and bark. I cover all the windows with reflectix panels I made for insulation, I turn my fantastic sucking air out on max (replaces all the air in the van every 90 seconds). I crack one window in a shaddy lower part of the van to create a consistent airflow. Other than that the fiberglass roof and insulation do a fantastic job of keeping the heat out. In colder climates I set the furnace on at minimum and close down all the windows same as for heat minus venting. - What happened to the girl? We decided to go seperate ways (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPgxDIXxCjY&t=4s) - Are you rich or something? definitely not. I've spent some quality time homeless, I've struggled financially most of my life, and although I'm blessed with great friends and family as well as being able bodied white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to travel the world. You need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, time with family, and often your career but it is possible. - Why don't you have 10x more subscribers? My channel isn't that old, many of the bigger channels you can compare mine to started putting out videos a couple years before I began. I could always use your help sharring my videos, spreading the word, and connecting with cross promotional opportunities. Editing and travelling tend to take up all my time.

Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** Now that we were sans guests, we had a little bit more exploring of Fiji to do. We found the beautiful Navadra island, complete with the only inhabitants: rogue goats. We were completely mystified as to how they ended up there, and the goats themselves weren't in a mood to answer our questions. After Navadra, the time had finally come to prepare to leave Fiji. When you're travelling full time you often don't have the budget to splurge on a sweet new boosted board, so just leash up your pup and get out your old beatup board and ride downtown Boise, Idaho in the rain. Music by Magic Sword (https://soundcloud.com/magic-sword) Really appreciate the support, check out the Patreon for more access and perks: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel to world. I make travel vlogs about my Vanlife, sharing vanlife ideas, vanlife tips, and travel diaries. Instagram: @Finding_Simon Snapchat: Finding_Simon Twitter: @FindingSimon :::::::FAQ::::::: - How do you afford to travel constantly?

How to choose a windlass. Or, what windlass should we buy to replace our mangled mess at the front of the boat? There's some technical boat maintenance stuff in this episode but there's also some rather splendid drone footage of the beautiful tropical island that is Langakwi. In this DIY, we install a Starter Switch Relay in our 1958 Porsche 356 A Cabriolet. The reason for this modification is to reduce the current that flows through the ignition switch when starting the car. The relay is from a Joe Leoni kit that includes the relay, all wiring, and instructions. The install is pretty straight forward, but I did run unto a small snag in that my car had a different connector (a ring) on the Solenoid than what was supplied in the kit (spade). Instead of chopping up the original wiring harness, I opted to build an additional bridge wire that I outline in the video. I did this for two reasons: I don’t want to alter the original wiring, and also, if the relay ever fails, I can quickly return it to the original state on the road if need be. If you wish to purchase the relay kit, you can contact Joe at joe356electrics@gmail.com. Also, feel free to contact me with any questions and I’ll try to get you going. We hope you enjoyed the video. In this episode we head north into Oregon for a hot second and check out the pillars of Rome. Music by Random Temple (https://soundcloud.com/randomtemple) Really appreciate the support, check out the Patreon for more access and perks: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel to world.
Before hauling our sailboat out and putting it on the hard, we decided to try to do some scuba diving in the Gulf of Mexico, but ended up with food poisoning at sea. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. This episode is when David's brother Thomas came for a stay aboard! The Yasawa Group of Fiji was beckoning and we were glad to answer the call. We all had a blast exploring Malolo Island (technically part of the Mamanucas), playing lots of cards, getting out for a few snorkels and even a dinner out on shore. Fiji was an absolute gem and we really enjoyed getting to share the experience! These headphones ensure superb clarity with clear sound separation from deep bass to crisp trebles. Plus they adopt low-volume air chambers and airtight stitching to improve sound insulation and deliver the pristine sound needed for monitoring in the loudest clubs. Sound Isolation: The ear pads' low-volume air chambers provide maximum insulation, reducing external noise in the mid to low frequencies. Plus their damper and airtight stitching ensure clarity for ease-of-monitoring without needing to crank up the volume in loud clubs. Maximum Comfort: Designed for maximum comfort and durability, these headphones have lightweight bindings on the headband and hanger to reduce the pressure on your head. Their soft, leather-like ear pads with memory foam ensure a snug fit – whether you're performing in a packed club or producing in the studio. Rotatable Housing: Each ear cup swivels a full 90 degrees, while the auto-return feature makes them ideal for on-the-shoulder monitoring. Plus the rugged swivel/fold mechanism and hard carry case means they’re easy to transport between gigs. In this episode Champ and I hit up the King's Canyon for an epic trail run, then we take a much deserved nap and finally fix the black tank or the RV. In the end we turn up at Moon Rocks for some BLM camping. Music by HHSweater (https://soundcloud.com/hhsweater) Really appreciate the support, check out the Patreon for more access and perks: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel to world. Oil Change! Carrera (Porsche 911 3.2 Liter) That time of year again and Shamoo (our 1986 Porsche 3.2 Carrera Cabriolet) get an oil change. I run you through all the steps and, as usual, I have a few DIY tips/tricks/hacks to make the job a little easier and help you get better results. Oil changes are an easy way to bond with your car and give you an opportunity to poke around and look for things that may need attention. What you’ll need: • Oil Filter: MAHLE OC54 (https://goo.gl/26HMfh) • Aluminum crush washer (https://goo.gl/MxXus1) • 10-12 Qts/L oil • At least a 4 gal oil collection pan/bucket. Two are best. • 15mm socket • Torque Wrench • Optional: Silicone grease, oil filler cap gasket, quick drain, magnetic drain plug (if you don’t have one already) So, I got a question about the drain plug... Do a search on Amazon: Fumoto FG7BN Engine Oil Drain Valve (22mm-1.5) https://goo.gl/zWGxzH Just be careful about clearance... They do make valves without the extension. I even saw a right angle version: Fumoto F309L Engine Oil Drain Valve (22mm-1.5) https://goo.gl/TFLQAE Drain Plug torque specs: 70nM (51.63 ft lbs) & 42nM (30.98 ft lbs) per Porsche Technical Specifications 84-87 (1st edition 12/86) page 63 If you don’t have access to a lift be super careful if you jack up the car. Use good and strong jack stands. Be safe! Please dispose of your oil responsibly. Auto parts stores and most oil change places will take it for free. In the episode of our Mumm 36 rebuild we go to work on the boats spreaders. We explain how we cut out the tired ends replacing them with new custom machined ones. The aluminium is then clean up and repainted to slow down future wear and damage. As with many task in the rebuild be needed to take the custom approach as it was not possible to buy new items which would fit. The mast and spreader mounts were original from when the boat was built in the mid 90's so there is little to no chance for finding something new. If you enjoyed the latest boat restoration episode make sure to like and subscribe so you are notified of future videos, we have many more boat DIY lessons to share as we rebuild our Mumm 36. #boatrestoration

Here we show you the simple setup we use for bathing and getting on and off our boat - both when we're swimming at anchor and we are 'Med Moored'. 🔔 SUBSCRIBE ➜ http://bit.ly/SBYouTube⛵ Some boats have very complicated systems to do this job - even going as far as having hydraulically-actuated platforms... (😲 The maintenance!...) We use a length of bungee chord (a.k.a. shock cord) with two carabiners whipped onto the ends to raise the gangplank and stop it rubbing on the dock. We find it simple but effective, so we thought we'd share it with you in this 'Sailing Tips' video. Do you know someone who has trouble to board their boat? An older person, someone with mobility issues, someone sailing with a baby or kids or even someone who sails with a dog? Share this video with them and they might love you forever! ⛵ Sailing Britaly ⛵ brings you the sailing shenanigans of Chris (British) and Rossella (Italian), as we sail our 30ft sloop. Considering a CDI Flexible Furling System. See what's inside the box before you buy. Which head sail furling system should you choose for your sailboat? That's a difficult question to answer. Every boat is different and is sailed in different areas. Every sailor is different, has a broad range of needs, budgets and expectations. CDI - Cruising Design International has been in the sailing industry for over two decades. They create a solid product backed by a very good warranty. Simplicity. Often, the simplest product is the best product. The Flexible Furler has one-eighth the number of parts of competitive systems and is the easiest to install, operate and maintain. Plus, the Flexible Furler is backed by an unequaled warranty. A patented, one-piece, UV stabilized PVC luff extrusion. This luff extrusion is as stiff in torsion as a metal system, and yet can bend without kinking, unlike metal systems. There are no joints to fail and it is designed to be winched. A built-in halyard. This eliminates troublesome halyard swivels and halyard wrap, maximizing reliability whether offshore or close to home. Reliable Furling. CDI's durable one-piece urethane furling drum and stainless steel drum cover keeps the furling line in place. You can accidentally drop your anchor onto the Flexible Furler drum and expect it to keep working! Fail Safe Bearings. Because of the built-in halyard, CDI's rugged bearings see only a fraction of the load carried by other systems. Smaller Flexible Furlers typically use a one-piece solid plastic bearing, though some sailors prefer ball bearings as a convenience option (like having power steering in a small car). The FF7.0 and 9.0 come with ball bearings standard.CDI uses ½" Torlon balls which roll over dirt easier and need less maintenance than the ¼" balls you find in less rugged systems. Easy Installation. Designed to be installed over your existing stay, cutting in half the installation time. Low Maintenance. It's recommended that you rinse your bearing with a hose every 5 years (a 5 minute procedure). That's it! And you don't have to drop your sail to rinse the bearing.

Music by SpaceCrime (https://soundcloud.com/spacecrime-official) In this episode I start off by watching the sunrise over San Francisco on Twin Peaks, then hang out on Crissy Fields, and motorbike the piers, get beat in an arm wrestling match with turn of the century tech and eat some tasty food with Van Dwellers in the bay area. All in all a great day. Really appreciate the support, check out the Patreon for more access and perks: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel to world. Instagram: @Finding_Simon Snapchat: Finding_Simon Twitter: @FindingSimon :::::::FAQ::::::: - How do you afford to travel constantly?
