Our adventure continues as we continue to learn how to sail by crewing on races, take the helm for the first time, and overcome our nerves to take a boat out on a windy day on beautiful Lake Pepin. We still have no idea what we are going but we are having a lot of fun trying to figure it out! This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching how to learn to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas! There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. We are excited (and a little nervous!) to share this journey with you. We hope that you learn a little from our experiences and maybe inspire you to make changes to live the life you want! —————————————————— SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW https://www.sailingonawhim https://www.youtube.com/sailingonawhim https://www.facebook.com/sailingonawhim https://www.instagram.com/sailing_on_a_whim https://www.twitter.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— CONSIDERING BECOMING A PATRON https://www.patreon.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— GEAR: Cannon EOS Rebel SL2 - https://amzn.to/2y2Hty1 Cannon Powershot G7x Mark II - https://amzn.to/2S6rOVu DJI Mavic Air - https://amzn.to/2W2OYgz GoPro Hero5 - https://amzn.to/2S8FizU Fantasea Line FG7X II - https://amzn.to/2xSuY8q Rode DDG-GO Deadcat - https://amzn.to/2Y4AT4G DJI Mavic Pro Plantinum - https://amzn.to/3eU5tUT —————————————————— RECOMMENDED READING: Learn to Sail – https://sailingonawhim.com/learn-to-sail Cruising Life – https://sailingonawhim.com/cruising-life Maintenance & Repair – https://sailingonawhim.com/maintenance-%26-repair Inspiration & Adventure – https://sailingonawhim.com/inspiration-%26-adventure —————————————————— MUSIC FROM EPIDEMIC SOUND —————————————————— The Abacos area of the Bahamas was devastated by Hurricane Dorian in September 2019. I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

This is a tease for the full video of Eagle Point Park, if you like this we know you will love the full video below. Also, check out other Explore Floridas on our channel and all the great content on our blog. Full Video: https://youtu.be/cj_ug3VH3uw This park is a hidden jewel, great place to fish, workout, or just relax. With covered picnic tables and charcoal grills, it is a wonderful place to take the family. There is also plenty for kids, with a well-maintained playground and great trails with a workout path. If you have love rocks this is a great place to leave your mark by exchanging with other lover rocks you may find. Danielle and I were going to go explore a more beachy location, but with spring break in full swing, plans change. There were 2 million more people in Tampa for spring break than last year, but there was plenty of room and parking at this park. We even tried to work out, we're not as young as we where in our Army days. We've been going for three years straight now. At first we were working full time jobs and building on nights and weekends to support ourselves and pay for the build. Recently the support has been strong enough for us to be able to work full time on the project but we were still held back on how much time we could work due to the amount of energy that goes into editing the videos we put out. This meant we were only working when both of us could be in the boathouse. Considering the videos took a good chunk of a week to edit (for a novice video editor... not bad) that meant we only got to work about two weeks a month. We've been wanting to change this for a long time and we are finally pulling the trigger. We hired on a video editor who will now be part of the team, editing all of our footage. This will free us both to be able to work whenever we choose, which means getting a lot more work done. AND that also means we are going to try to ramp up to doing weekly videos so that you can all see more progress, more often! However, we are really jumping the gun on this one. We are really tightening up the belt for this and dipping into funds (Ben our editor as well). So we need your help. A lot of work goes into sharing these videos (build work, but also planning, shooting, producing, editing, etc) but we never want to put them behind a pay wall so that only those able to pay for it can see them. If you find any enjoyment or benefit in the videos we create and share, please consider donating to help keep them coming. And if you can't support monetarily, consider telling people you think would enjoy these videos so we can grow our presence. Every little bit helps! If you would like to help via continued support, you can do so per video on Patreon ( http://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella ). You have control over how much you donate per video and can set a cap on how much you donate per month (can be as little as $1). OR If you would prefer to make one time donations, you can do so through our website http://www.acorntoarabella.com You can donate via card or Paypal. We've already got an amazing community and we are sure that we can grow this into something much bigger than it already is. So, thank you very much for all the support! Alix + Steve Acorn to Arabella Journey of a Wooden Boat --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The main focus this year has been our Alaska and British Columbia cruise and with all the traveling we’ve done, boat projects and maintenance have had to wait. But we’re going to tackle all that now when we’ll be in Seattle for a while. First up is our chain locker! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter, January 2016, and started sailing south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us. Moist Carrot Banana Cake Smothered in Butter Cream Cheese Frosting is a Perfect and Simple Dessert, snack or Breakfast! Our moist and delicious Carrot Banana Cake was inspired by our Banana Bread Cake! It's the perfect combination of Ripe Sweet Bananas with Shredded Carrots than Smothered with our Creamy Butter Cream Cheese Frosting with NO POWDERED Sugar! Because the Bananas and Carrots are sweet enough, this Cake only has 1/2 Cup of Cane Sugar for a Sheet Cake Pan and 1 Cup of Cane Sugar in our Creamy Delicious Frosting, that's a total of 1 1/2 Cups for a whole Sheet of Cake!

Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** One of the things we loved about Indonesia was the pristine water and the beautiful coral and aquatic life. And Hoga Island in Wakatobi National Park had all three of those things in abundance. Between going snorkeling and diving, it felt like we spent more time under the water here than above it! During those few moments we were above the water, we were productive: trying new foods, getting dive tanks filled and separating for a guys and girls night. We filmed guys night and our friends over at 22 South filmed girls night. You can check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4U9UAZECGI Thanks for watching! Replacing the valve cover gasket on a Lincoln LS with the Jaguar V6. The driver's side is very easy to do, the passager side not so much cause you have to take the intake off. This project took us about 2 hours minus adult beverage breaks, then the video took 6 hours to create. I guess with innovation they just don't want people to be able to fix there own car, hints the cost to repair a car has gone up so much. The annual process of antifouling is upon us and we need to make some decisions about what to use, where to antifoul and what is going to suit us as we cruise the Mediterranean. It's not a simple decision as there are so many products on the market, and this stuff doesn't come cheap. La Rochelle-based builder Neel presented their brand-new 47 at the 2019 International Multihull Show at La Grande Motte. On board this trimaran designed by Marc Lombard, there’s the generous central space, which merges saloon and cockpit - the in-house name is the Cockloon. The main innovation: the owner's cabin is located on the same level as the rest of the platform, and offers a direct view of the route ahead or the anchorage. The floats fitted out as guest cabins allow the owner and crew to receive friends for short or medium stays or to offer some independence to the children. An intelligent and convincing layout in use. All the technical equipment is grouped in the central hull, below floor level. This means bonuses for space saving, ease of maintenance, reduced and centered weight. Cream Cheese Frosting So Creamy made with Real Cane Sugar and Real Butter! Our Butter Cream Cheese Frosting was an experiment that took a few tries before getting the creamy consistency with real Cane Sugar! Full Recipe on Blog: https://www.chrisdoeswhat.com/creamy-butter-cream-cheese-frosting/ Sugar is grainy and can be hard to make smooth that is why most cream cheese frostings are made with powdered sugar.

Ep 38 WE HEAR THE BABY’S HEART BEAT! At long last we’ve reached the 12 week point in Hayley’s pregnancy and head to a great Doc in St Martin and see and hear our little angel. You’ll have to watch thru to the end to see how it goes. We start this episode in Anguilla doing all the regular maintenance jobs that yachts deserve and then head for Saint Martin in what we expected to be 35kts + so we got there pretty fast! That’s nothing that Susan Ann II hasn’t sailed before or can easily handle… it’s just the crew (us) would prefer to avoid if possible but we had a hospital appointment to make. Cheers to those of you who took the time to help out with our water heater issue. It’s a small problem but a real PITA changing that anode every 6 months when I know other Lagoon 450’s that have never changed it! I’m typing this 12 months after this episode was filmed and I’m still having the issue regardless of where the water comes from. In Lagoon’s defence they have been great with all other issues to date but the most important consideration is the lack of issues that we have had. We’ve been very lucky compared to many other yacht manufacturers we know. Thanks for following our adventure, we make these vids for you guys so please don’t forget to leave us a comment and a thumbs up. All of our sailboat repair and maintenance blogs are now hosted on our dedicated maintenance channel, MOTHERSHIP MAINTENANCE Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/c/mothershipmaintenance An edited version of this video is now hosted there. Our boat's #Mastervolt #Chargemaster 24/100 #batterycharger is one of the most important pieces of electrical equipment on our sailboat.. and normally one of the most reliable. So when it goes wrong, it's a big problem. We couldn't charge batteries from either shore power or our #Cumminsonan generator but luckily we could still charge from our #volvopenta engine alternator and prop-shaft generator. So while we waited the six weeks for it to be repaired, we had to move constantly to re-charge the batteries and had to live as energy efficiently as possible! Special thanks to #FischerPanda UK Ltd and #Aquafax for their help and advice and #UPS couriers for for being so reliable with the delivery. We spend the summer sailing around the English channel, the Scilly Isles and the Channel Islands as a shake down cruise to prepare Fair Isle for long term cruising. Living aboard a sailboat long term is very different from weekend sailing so we are dealing with all the changes we need to make for a voyaging sailboat. We will be adding lots of tips on anything to do with sailing on our new website. There's a 'Tips and Tricks' page and a technical page for all the geeky stuff. In this Episode; WARNING: Footage at the end of the video might be DISTURBING to some. In this Episode; Amazing Drone aerial footage of some of the gorgeous Islets and Cays near the Belizean barrier reef. Exploring mangrove estuaries in the Sittee River where some say Crocodiles lurk and amazing underwater footage of the coral reefs and tropical fish at the Belizean barrier reef. WARNING: Footage at the end of the video might be DISTURBING to some. I felt compelled to share (at the end of the video) some of the frustration we feel with regards to the amounts of plastic trash we come across while out exploring remote areas of the Caribbean. The footage might be disturbing to some. Every windward beach in Belize on the islands we visited were in a similar situation, but it's a problem throughout the Caribbean. I've shared the Caribbean's plastic problem in the past in smaller doses, but the Barrier reef of Belize is a World Heritage site and the World needs to know what is happening to it. I think the reasons it's so prevalent in Belize is because of the prevailing Trade Winds. Trade Winds push West and Belize is the final stopping point. Plastic trash out here is a sad problem. It's more than just unpleasant to see, small pieces of plastic bags are seen as jelly fish to Turtles, many fish are filter feeders including the giant Whale Shark and as plastic breaks down into smaller pieces fish are ingesting it... Plastic. It's becoming a bigger problem for Belize. Because of the constant push West from the Trade Winds the windward sides of the islands we visited were covered in plastic trash. Please SUBSCRIBE and tap on the NOTIFICATION BELL so that you never miss an episode! We welcome Bruce and Brenda, John and Cory aboard Saltair3 to share the experience of learning to sail a Big Cat and what it's really like living a life on the Sea. A week long adventure of learning to sail, getting a taste of what it’s like living on a catamaran in the Caribbean, how we make our power and our water, and how we provision, cook, diesel maintenance and more… all while exploring the amazing Belizean Barrier Reef! We had a great time, made some great friends and shared our lives a step past our videos... They came as strangers to us and left as great friends, although they had a pretty good idea of who we are before the came Lol! Said Bruce; "that was the most amazing sailing trip of my life..." This video shares some of the highlights of their trip… I hope it doesn’t feel like an advertisement, it wasn’t made in that fashion. Simply an opportunity to share with the world, more of the adventure, and that’s what we are all about… You too can spend an all inclusive week with us aboard our catamaran Saltair3 learning how to live a life on the sea and leave a small environmental foot print, how to prepare, repair, provision, catch fish and lobster, how to safely check into foreign countries and learn to sail a Big Cat, or just sit back, relax and enjoy being aboard Saltair3 in the warm and beautiful Caribbean Sea. In this video I start the process of re-bedding and servicing our anchor windlass by isolating the deck core where the windlass is mounted. I then turn to dissasembling the windlass and take care of some nasty rust issues! If you like these videos, please SUBSCRIBE to see more, and be sure to give this video a like! In August of 2017 I sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is our YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and the occasional crewmembers(s) as we navigate the east coast of North America and beyond. We also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard in a cold climate. We hate to replace Sprinkler Heads and it seems like you have to do it almost every spring. There is a way to unclog them after the dirt has filled them over the winter and we are going to show you how to do it. If you need to buy more Sprinkler Heads: https://amzn.to/2FcV2vy First, you turn on the Sprinkler System. Next, you put a clamp on to hold the Sprinkler Head up. Then turn of the Sprinklers and take off the head. You will see a screen mesh in in the Sprinkler Tube the Sprinkler Head come off. Simply wash it out with water and then reassemble everything. A lot goes into this project behind the scenes that we don't talk about. Most of that is the mental game of figuring out how to do what we need to do. That also includes learning as much of the ins and outs of the process and why it is done that way. When it came to planking, we researched a myriad of different options at our disposal to come up with the most appropriate way for us. In the end, that meant learning about the local use of our Northern White Cedar and how to deal with its quirks (mainly bunging knots). As for the floor timbers, it was learning about wood, metal and composite floors, along with the pros and cons of each. Once we decided that Bronze Floors were likely one of the better options, we had to decide between casting them and welding them and what would be most convenient and affordable. So! We hope you appreciate us sharing that learning journey and that it may help some of you along on your own project! As always, thank you for watching and for your support! Stay tuned for some great things to come! Rewiring an Amp and Subwoofer to the proper gauge wire and then setting the crossover to clean up the sound. Amazon 1/0 to 8 AWG Wiring Kit: https://amzn.to/2T6JRbs I really liked helping this young man out to get more sound from the system he has. He really liked the way our son's Jeep sounds but could not afford to go to a super stereo shop and get charged hourly for them to fix the mess. The sound of the system was night and day just doing this change with the proper wire and setting the amp crossover. Now the only thing he may have to do is replace the subwoofer, the very next day he blew the dust cover off it. Here Danielle shows you haw to cut an avocado that in perfect slices for serving. This avocado is the larger Florida one, but the same applies to the smaller ones. When doing this be sure to not to apply to much pressure, you can easily go through the skin of the avocado and cut your fingers. If you are not sure you can do this without cutting through the skin grab a hot pad to hold the avocado as you slice it.If you are looking for dices avocado simple cut from the other direction across your slices. Once you have the avocado sliced simple take a spoon and scrape between the skin and the meat of the avocado. This tip will save you tons of time working with avocados in the kitchen and we hope it helps. There is a lot to maintaining a small motor yacht. Marina costs, maintenance, operating costs, etc. People always ask if it is worth the money and expense to participate in small motor yacht cruises. The video shows the benefits that are derived from small yacht ownership.

We need a new dinghy / tender for our sailing boat, it needs to be lightweight and a good price because we are getting cracking in our gelcoat. Apart from Highfield, I also discovered 3D Tenders, Quicksilver and AB / Lamima rigid inflatable boats. How do they compare in weight and price ? Right now we're living in clutter. The goal of these next couple months is to fix that, and that starts with adding useful storage areas in our boat. Having a place to store things isn't enough on a cruising boat. Those storage places have to also be secure and have to prevent anything inside from flying all over the boat when underway. We're going to add more storage and cabinet doors soon. We also plan to finish the headliner/hull liner in the salon in the next month. We hope to have a comfy and cozy home that we can be proud of sometime in the near future. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's.
