On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, we take a road trip across Florida to check out Sailorman’s selection of marine consignment, witness a manatee being released back into the wild at our marina, and of course, boat projects! This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching learning how to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas. There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. We are excited (and a little nervous!) to share this journey with you. We hope that you learn a little from our experiences and maybe inspire you to make changes to live the life you want! —————————————————— Need to fill up your CNG tanks? Video Sponsored by Ridge Wallet: https://www.ridgewallet.com/lines Use Code “lines” for 10% off your order” This boat is simply UNREAL. It's a dream yacht in every respect. The size of this vessel is simply astonishing, boasting four heads and sleeping for 8-10 people. The master stateroom is probably bigger than our current studio apartment! She's got a ton of space on deck, is cutter rigged, dual helmed, and all of the controls are electric making her easy to single or shorthand despite her size. There's also the protected navigation station with good visibility forward and to the sides for long passages. All of these features, along with the pedigree of Oyster Yachts, make her a great go-anywhere boat for the family that can afford her. I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

This week we opened the diesel tank of our sailboat that was full for over 22 years. We spent a week cleaning it and it was a loooot of work. Guess how many liters of diesel our tank supports! If you are new here... we are a Brazilian couple that have just bought a 44ft hot galvanized steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200) and is on the mission of bringing her back to life after 22 years abandoned on the hard. Once we are done, the plan is to sail her to our home town Florianópolis so we can finish building our land base, a Tiny Shipping Container House that we are building ourselves without any prior experience. This week we're visited by the coastguard to check we're complying with Turkey's strict Blue Card Scheme and more enjoyably.. by family from the UK who come sailing in Turkey with us! The kids have their birthday onboard so we visit an adventure play park in Marmaris while we have rigging and sails changed on our sailboat. When the maintenance and upgrades are complete we sail for Bodrum with a few stops on the way. The Turkish coastline in beautiful but still not immune from the curse of plastic pollution. But we don't let that spoil our fun with a hike in the hills (in unsuitable footware!) and onto the beach for nighttime camp fires! Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** Up to this point, most of our time in Thailand had been spent in boatyards. And that's not exactly how we pictured spending our time in SE Asia. So with the boatwork (finally!) finished, we set out to do a more thorough exploration of Phi Phi Island. This time our friend Carlanna joined us to do some hiking, see some monkeys and eat a lot of mango. However, the end of the SE Asia cruising season was upon us, so we had to head back to Phuket, do a bit more exploration, say goodbye to Carlanna and get ready to set sail across the Indian Ocean. Thanks for watching! (Footage from January 2019) Curious for more up to date info on where we are and what we're doing? Make sure to check out our other social media pages! Your Sail boat and life hang on your anchoring system/anchor Tackle when you are sailing around the world, cruising full time on a liveaboard sailboat. Its important to consider and maintain your ground tackle! This includes the deck under your Windlass, Windlass servicing, buying new anchor chain, and then carefully choosing the best anchor swivel, shackles. and anchor/rode (anchor Tackle). Last time, Patrick ripped out the fiberglass deck on our sailboat to find the balsa coring wet and rotten, and he replaced it with solid fiberglass. This week, he re installs the Lofrans Tigres Windlass, after changing the oil, replacing a gasket diy, and mounts the Windlass. Our new anchor chain is a high quality, calibrated hot dip galvanized anchor chain shipped from Maggi Chain USA called Aqua 4, a G40 Chain, (grade 40) which has been tested and certified to the highest standards. It is made in Italy under tight quality control, not in a Chinese factory prone to cost cutting and short-cutting. Our Manson Supreme Anchor, along with our Mantus anchor swivel will be shown in a future episode, also not Chinese made. Patrick shows how he marks the chain with paint every 50 feet so we know how much chain has been let out when we anchor. We wanted NO cheap Chinese Anchor Chain on our offshore sailboat, sailing around the world. We crossed an entire ocean for a year; the Indian Ocean, so that we could buy it from http://maggichainusa.com, and have it shipped to us in Richards Bay, South Africa. We would not buy Chinese anchor chain! We only found anchor chain made in China while in SE Asia. But we have witnessed First world marine products made in overseas factories. Even with European managers, quality control is just not consistent. Anchor chain made in China will never go on SV Brick House. ourLofrans Tigres windlass was also made in Italy and has performed flawlessly with regular oil changes and maintenance, and this year a new gypsy to accommodate 3/8" anchor chain. Maggi Chain USA sent us calibrated windlass anchor chain, made in Italy. There is another brand their sister company offers called LaClede Chains made in the USA...and both are extremely high quality anchor windlass Chains made in first world countries, NOT Made in China! We would simply NOT have anchor chain made in China! If anything were to go wrong, we have a reputable company with a high level of service to work the problem with. Maggi Chain USA stands by their products, and bent over backwards making sure our anchor chain made it safely to us, all the way to South Africa. Later in this great sailboat diy video, Patrick shows how he secures the bitter end of the chain, Marks the lengths so we know how much has been put down on the ocean floor, and how he moves the weight of the chain far aft to cut down on weight in the bow. We also dump our old rusty CQR anchor with no replacement anywhere in sight! We like having two anchors on the bow, for emergencies, but until we find the right anchor, we will simply survive with our reliable Manson Supreme anchor. We are getting farther up the hull with the planking and as we do so, we are nearing the point at the stern where the propeller shaft will go through. We need to get this hole bored before we plank past it because we are going to need to be able to align our bore perfectly level (our shaft is level to the water line). Before we start to bore though, we want to make sure that we have all the pieces made and ready to be installed so that everything can go right in after the hole is ready and nothing will move before we get a chance to instal. We will be reusing Victoria's exterior fitting for the cutless bearing but also need to make a fixture on the internal portion of the stern post to accept the stuffing box. There are no fittings that enter and lay on the stern post at the correct angle we have, so, we are going to be making our own with our Bridgeport milling machine, metal lather and help from our good friend Joe! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. The Big REFRIGERATOR SWAP! 4th of July Fireworks AT OUR DOCK! MORE Fireworks from our SHORE POWER!! You can count on any "new" boat to curse you with a multitude of expenses, especially if you plan to voyage long term and REALLY need everything to work - and recently this phenomenon has been in full force aboard Cecilia! This time it's the refrigerator (which conveniently died while we were away for a couple weeks, developing its own ecosystem by the time we returned). So out goes the old and in goes the new. We also get a treat of some awesome fireworks for the 4th right from our dock and then it's back to repairs as JELLYFISH stage and all out assault on our air conditioning system!! Enjoy!! And be sure to SUBSCRIBE for WEEKLY CONTENT EVERY FRIDAY! Cheers!! Thanks for watching SailAway, the travel documentary of an adventurous sailing couple, plus toddler and dog, sailing the world! We love our teak interior, but with such beauty comes a certain level of care. Finally, after many other projects, it was time to start varnishing our interior, starting with our Stateroom. This project video is 3 in 1: we were not only revarnishing but also creating a new locker to hold our water heater and auxiliary diesel tank, and resealing our portlights. --- Follow us on Social Media! We've had a lot of you guys requesting more affordable project boat tours, and this one definitely qualifies. The Bayfield 36 is a great boat model for a couple to own, refit, and cruise aboard. It's a cutter-rigged, full-keeled, go-anywhere bluewater cruiser at a realistic price point, and it has a bath tub! We love the design, but our two biggest complaints are engine access and the location of the chart table. No boat is perfect though, so we still believe the positives outweigh the negatives and it's a great boat for the money. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sailing Soulianis' Boat Buying Dashboard: http://sailingsoulianis.com/shop/ltl-boat-buying-dashboard/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Asking price: $24,500 You can find more information along with the broker's contact info here: https://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1988/bayfield-36-3468170/?refSource=enhanced%20listing ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.

Turtle Bay is a famous nesting beach near Dalyan in Turkey, visited by rare species of turtles who come to lay their eggs (check out Darry's information film!). So we drop by for a visit ourselves before moving to a quiet anchorage for a snorkel (after some shoreline problems!) But it doesn't stay quiet for long A weird looking boat sails into the bay, turning our quiet stop into a frenzy of activity as we find ourselves doing a supermarket challenge at sea on a floating Migros Supermarket, before it leaves! Next we sail into Gocek to have our rigging replaced and end up in D-Marin, a posh marina where we find ourselves accidentally moored alongside superyachts (again!) but make full use of the facilities for the day, including chauffeur driven golf buggies and a man-made beach! Thanks To D-Marin, Emek Marin and M2 Yacht Services for all the work done while we were there. Between a morning of engine maintenance and an afternoon of kiteboarding we lost one of our most important tools, ugh. Ponce actually had a really nice beach to launch a kite from and as long as I didn't fall on the shallow, hard, coraly, rocky bottom then kiteboarding was absolutely amazing in Ponce! In it's heyday this boat was beautiful. Unfortunately, she's not in such great shape today. This boat needs a complete refit, and totally refitting a 56 foot yacht is a HUGE undertaking that will cost an unimaginable amount of time and money. It's not something to be taken lightly. The biggest question is... is she worth it? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sailing Soulianis' Boat Buying Dashboard: http://sailingsoulianis.com/shop/ltl-boat-buying-dashboard/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The asking price for this vessel is currently $98,900. Completing Arabella's hull is something we are eagerly striving for. With this installment we cross a milestone in that goal. All of Arabella's frames that can currently go in, are finally installed. Once we have completed the planking process, the last seven sets of frames (currently blocked by the molds) will go in. Making these sawn frames was an interesting exercise in learning a new construction technique and Alix got the opportunity to tackle the process with these frames in the stern. While working on these, Steve and Ahmed worked on building a rack to store our cedar, which has up until now been taking up the majority of the space in our garage. With this lumber out of the garage we are able to put the Bridgeport and metal lathe to proper use. Both of which will be crucial for one of our upcoming tasks! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

One step at a time we are getting closer to sailing. Firsts things first hoisting the sails. Actually we had to first crimp our headsail halyard. And as usual we get a few other projects completed such as installing dinghy davits on a sailboat. Thanks Danny. ***** We'd been having a pretty rough time lately, with a bad haul-out, followed by hitting a reef which necessitated another haul-out only a few weeks later. So when my sister wanted to plan a trip to Thailand, we were absolutely thrilled to have a good excuse to leave the boatyard and explore Phuket. Phuket is a vibrant city with lots to see and our highlights on this trip had to be the Night Market in Old Town Phuket and a visit to the Phuket Elephant Sanctuary. The street food at the night market was delicious and one of the major highlights of Thailand for us. An elephant experience is also a popular tourist attraction, and the sanctuary allowed us to get up close and personal with these amazing creatures in a fun and humane way. After exploring the city, it was time to head back to the boat yard, launch Starry Horizons and do a quick shake down sail to Phi Phi Island. Thanks for watching! As part of our refit of Vida (a 42-year-old Rival 38 centre cockpit) as preparation for cruising, we have become rather obsessed with the number of holes in the bottom and the seacocks protecting them. Also shows some of the other features of Vida. See our blog at https://sustainablesailing.net/ See blog post on seacocks at https://sustainablesailing.net/2019/09/13/refurbish-or-replace-seacocks/ Also our update that shows the inside of the aft heads with the seacock that we are halfway through removing https://sustainablesailing.net/2019/09/19/aft-head-update/ Sustainable Sailing clothing at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ If you would like to encourage us you can support us on Ko-Fi! https://ko-fi.com/sustainablesailing

We sail all the way from Spain to Turkey to have some major upgrades completed including new standing rigging, new cockpit canopy, new sails and a double Racor filter fitted on the engine. The last time we had major works done was in Tunisia last year but we still had a lot left to do. This video shows how we prepare for the work to be done, how we had to import the rigging into Turkey and it shows a lot of the work being done. Woody also takes off on a tour of workshops and new boats in the Gocek area on the back of a motorbike. We are a family with 3 children and make our own electricity and water, homeschool the kids and do our own boat maintenance. Our dream of cruising and exploring the world's oceans is matched with a desire to live a more off-grid and sustainable lifestyle. A background as RYA instructors, flotilla skippers and RNLI crew only partly prepared us for the challenges of this live-aboard lifestyle! Getting close to starting, have to primp the oil pump and install the distributor at top dead center number one. In this video, we show how we prime the oil pump on the cheap, and then how to find top dead center on the number one cylinder using a compression gauge and a screwdriver. With then put the plug wires on showing the firing order. When we got our boat back from the mechanic, not only did we have a lot of missing pieces, there was an oil pump in the box. This had us a bit worried because we already had to buy the missing pieces, but to put in an oil pump would require us to pull the engine. Luckily after doing all the test in this video, our minds were put at ease as we saw the oil pressure rise on our oil pressure test gauge. Boat Deck Repair: HOW TO Repair a sailboat deck that is rotten to the balsa core! We recommend fixing s sail boat deck BEFORE The anchor windlass just rips right out of the fiberglass sailboat decking! ! Patrick Childress Sailing Patrick spends a weekend with some DIY repairs on the bow deck and decides how to repair the deck of a sailboat this time! ...he felt that the deck was a bit soft around the windlass, probably signifying some rotten balsa coring, so he decided to rip up the fiberglass deck, and explore what was under the Lofrans anchor windlass, and start some boat deck repair to be sure our windlass stays attached in all anchoring conditions. So he removed the Lofrans windlass, tears in to ripping up the deck, only to find wet balsa core, and has to decide how to Repair the deck of a sailboat . . He cut back a rather large area of the deck and removed all the wet balsa coring material. He shows step by step, how he removes it, and cleans it up, and then how he makes all the fiberglass deck repairs, and then fairs it out, primes the deck, and then paints the deck. Fiberglass deck repairs, shown step by step. He will remount the windlass in a future sailing diy video. This old sailboat Brick House is stronger than ever! One more sailboat restoration project out of the way, One more surprise behind us, on the hard in South Africa. In last week's episode, we went into detail about how we are fabricating the forward sawn floors. From how we are taking measurements using tick sticks and a template to how we are cutting our rolling bevel down the frames without a ship's saw. In this episode we get into more of that work and also show how we fabricate the Bronze Floors for these frames. The floors look very different than our floors for the steamed frames and require a little figuring out for the angles. During that time we also get a lot of help from Dominique who came all the way from Belgium to come help on the project. Finally we roll out a long awaited idea of ours. We have been asked many times if we could provide something on our site for people to buy, that is made out of the wood from the project as well as Victoria's Mahogany pieces that wouldn't be used in the build. We finally got these done and we are happy to say that we have custom handmade pens now available on our site with plenty of time for shipping as Christmas gifts! LOREN GEARS UP and GOES IN THE CAVE!! We FINISH the INSTALL of our new STERN ARCH! It was a somewhat complicated process, but in a day and a half, we finish the install of our Atlantic Towers Stern/Dignhy/Solar arch. It doesn't all go smoothly of course (it is a boat after all), so what's the solution? Cutting MORE holes in the boat, this time with a jigsaw! It's okay because we know it'll be worth it when our dinghy is hanging proud and our solar is juicing our batteries with all that glorious energy. :-) Enjoy!!
