I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

We'd like your help! We've made some very good friends these past years via the project. A lot of which are doing some very cool things. At the last WoodenBoat Show at Mystic Seaport, we met up with a group of them and hatched a plan. Our friends at SAILCARGO have set up a ship yard in Costa Rica and are building a 147ft (45m) cargo ship from sustainably harvested wood with the plan of sailing cargo up and down the west coast of the Americas. Along with building the boat, they also provide some community events, teaching locals classes, including boat building. While we were chatting at the show we and a few other friends decided to all storm the place in February and teach a course on simple forging and tool making techniques. Before we head down there though, we would like to ship down some tools to help with the class and the boatyard. We're asking anyone who would like to help by donating tools or supplies to send us what they have. We sail from Turkey and arrive in the Greek islands, witness a high speed chase on the sea (possibly a people smuggling operation?) and try to check into Greece. Our journey continues across the Dodecanese and the Cyclades but we don't make it all the way across and instead the wind blows us South to the Island of Astypelea. This Island is beautiful, remote and peaceful. We climb up to the Chora and discover the rich history of invasion and piracy entwined in the winding passageways and houses clinging to the mountainside. We continue our sail West towards the Island of Folegrandos where we struggle to anchor due to the extreme gusts coming from the North side of the Island and making the Southern anchorage untenable. Finally we manage to moor up in a small bay on the end of a fishermans quay. We are a family with 3 children and make our own electricity and water, homeschool the kids and do our own boat maintenance. Our dream of cruising and exploring the world's oceans is matched with a desire to live a more off-grid and sustainable lifestyle. A background as RYA instructors, flotilla skippers and RNLI crew only partly prepared us for the challenges of this live-aboard lifestyle! Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** The Indian Ocean is big. It's daunting. It can throw wicked storms at you out of nowhere. But in order to sail around the world, we had to sail cross it. The first step in that journey was sailing from Phuket, Thailand over to Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. Amazingly enough, at just over 1,000nm this would end up being our longest passage across the entire Indian Ocean. And rather than having to worry about those ferocious storms, we were concerned about a lack of wind. Starry Horizons wasn't phased though and proved to us just how well she could sail in light winds. So well in fact that we arrived a whole day earlier than anticipated! Not bad for a cruising cat! We think these boat cleats on our Bayliner Bowrider 175 are going to hold up! They didn't break when I pulled against them with 230lb, and they worked great at the dock during boat testing. The black nylon isn't going to rust like the old cleats on this Bayliner Bowrider, and they only cost $18. Installing the cleats was a little harder on this boat because the spacing of the holes was only 1 and 5/8 inches versus the 2-inch spacing of the old rusted cleats we removed. The bolts it came with were a little too short for our application, plus the looked a little weaker than what we wanted for this boat. We went to tractor supply and got us some real bolts that would not break under the pressure when we tie up our old boat to the dock. How to repair a bulkhead, and fix the tabbing on the hull of a sailboat before the titanium chain plates rip right out! Often Bulkhead repair is needed even more than replacing the rigging. So many people think to replace the standing rigging with new rigging wire. Before replacing the rigging, take a hard look at what they are attached to.the mats...the tangs...the chainplates, and the bulkhead. And Have you considered titanium chainplates? If you have already gone through the expense of replacing your old stainless steel chain plates with titanium chainplates, you should make sure that the bulkheads they are attached to are really strong too! This video explains how to fix your bulkheads, step by step... Patrick demonstrates how to fix a rotten bulkhead, with failed tabbing, with fiberglass cloth and fiberglass resin, to make any Cruising sailboat, stronger than ever before, and ready to cross oceans..the Atlantic Ocean being next, once we get around Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. He also talks about the pros and cons of titanium on sailboats, and some of the characteristics of titanium metal instead of stainless steel. Sailing around the world requires constant boat maintenance and boats repairs, to keep the boat seaworthy and floating. This is just one more thing to make sure the boat is strong, and that the standing rigging and mast stays standing! (No Sailboat Dismasting!) How to repair a bulkhead in a sailboat will show you that this diy boat project doesn’t have to be complicated, and can be one of many diy sailboat projects. With a project like this, there are always going to be ups and downs. The key is trying to stay up beat and finding a way around the road bumps. We've been greatly slowed down this summer by the work of figuring out the prop shaft assembly which has required a lot of machining which we needed help with. Now, we are back to the planking and we have run into another issue. The Resorcinol glue we had bought for the planking this summer turned out to have gone bad on us and now we are experiencing glue failures on planks we were hoping to get on the boat this week. It has been frustrating but it just means we need to move ahead with other tasks and just wait for some fresher glue and come up with a system to help them cure properly. But in the mean time, we can bore the stern post to accept the prop shaft assembly. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. This is a big step for us. The first time overnight sailing on Lake Erie. I had a mix of excitement and apprehension as we set sail from Sugarloaf Marina at 11pm. What a night and why do that? So that we could enjoy a weekend at Long Point where Pottahawk Pissup 2019 was being held. Apparently one of the biggest boat meet-up in Canada. We were in for a surprise as we experience fully what was this party about. Alex even getting fined at Pottahawk. It's a video full of sailing and fun! Just yer average life at anchor next to a tropical island: boat work, beach walking, beer drinking... using a hookah (that's hookah, not hooker!) for boat maintenance. White beaches, gin-clear water and thriving coral fringe this green and lush island, while granite rocks straight out of a Henry Moore sculpture park dot the coastline. In this week’s video, we go to Malta!! And the welcome that we get blows our minds, our ears and our hearts. Although we were going to stay in Grand Harbour, a very nice subscriber let us use his mooring buoy all throughout our stay in the capital of Malta! We also just happened to arrive during the feast of Saint Lawrence in Birgu, a festival during which a massive amount of fireworks are launched… and they were launched 200 meters away from our boat :) As we were going to spend a little more time in Malta, we decided to do a couple of maintenance project that in combination with the blazing heat made Ryan slightly loose it. This boat is WEIRD, but in a good way. All of the Dragonfly Trimarans are very unique in that they're extremely fast and portable, albeit a little pricey. The folding floats allow these boats to fit into a normal slip and be trailered. They can also top out at around 25 knots under sail! If you're into an exciting experience in a daysailor/weekender, then a dragonfly might be the boat for you. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sailing Soulianis' Boat Buying Dashboard: http://sailingsoulianis.com/shop/ltl-boat-buying-dashboard/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Link to Dragonfly: https://dragonfly.dk/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. *** NEW WEBSITE - NOW LIVE *** (August 2020) If you'd like to know more about us, our plans, our boat and this adventure, then be sure to check out our new website here: https://www.cluelessyachties.com UK Sailing boat collision, the moment it was caught on camera! Our boat was crashed into by another boat while we were filming some DIY videos on our blue water sailing boat (CADOHA), whilst moored up on the south coast of the United Kingdom. The past couple of weeks on our sailing yacht had been spent completing a long list of essential boat maintenance chores for our 1984 Trident Warrior sail boat. We originally bought our classic old boat up in Scotland and have gradually sailed her down, around the UK, via Ireland, before heading over to England, where we’re currently getting ready before we set sail for the Mediterranean in the spring of next year. It’s been a challenging year so far, with not nearly as much sailing being done as we would of hoped, thanks mostly to one accident that left Dominic with a broken leg. Life on the water certainly isn’t without it’s challenges. We got to a point that we don't know what to do on this step of refitting our abandoned sailboat. We don't really know how to solve this problem. If you are new here... we are a Brazilian couple that have just bought a 44ft hot galvanized steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200) and is on the mission of bringing her back to life after 22 years abandoned on the hard. Once we are done, the plan is to sail her to our home town Florianópolis so we can finish building our land base, a Tiny Shipping Container House that we are building ourselves without any prior experience. If you follow this boat restore project, the lake testing is probably what you have been waiting on. Does the old Bayliner Bowrider 175 cruise off into the sunset, or does it blow up and sink. In this video we get the boat Mercruiser 3.0 liter timed and ready to hit the water, testing her on the lake for the first time. We discover we have a few issues we have to work out on the water, then we put the boat up and show how we maintain the boat after a lake trip. We return to Bodrum (from our visit to the Gobekli Tepe on the Turkey/Syrian border - see Ep:048) to find our boat dragging.. and we collide with a Turkish gullet which destroys some of our rigging! Undeterred we head off inland yet again to the Roman city of Ephesus (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and on to Izmir to visit some new friends, where we enjoying some kite surfing and a traditional Turkish breakfast - yum! While waiting for another meltemi to pass through, we *enjoy* our noisy Bodrum anchorage, do a final shop, replace our damaged rigging then finally check out of Turkey altogether. Bye bye Turkey - been a blast! PLEASE NOTE: YouTube have disabled comments on family channels because they sometimes feature kids. SUBSCRIBE for WEEKLY SAILING videos! We left you hanging there last week with that water strainer.. but of course Alex managed to install a new one before noon! And we were off before the charter boats started pouring in. We spend 2 days on anchor before heading over to Athens, where we stayed a couple of days in Zea Marina, an ancient port, with a pretty cool layout. We pick up a guest, Alex' dad, do some boat repairs, because boats always need maintenance, and then leave again! Only to break a sail slide on our main sail on our first sail after leaving Athens.. good luck finding a new one.. In the end it all comes down to the day we broke a sail slide on our main sail. Video Sponsored by Ridge Wallet: https://www.ridgewallet.com/lines Use Code “lines” for 10% off your order” This boat is very unique. I'd even go so far as to say weird, but in a good way! In a market saturated with production catamarans that are more "floating condos" than true liveaboard cruising yachts, the Maverick 440 is a breath of fresh air. Personally, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better liveaboard cruising vessel for a couple or a small family than this one. Dollar weeds are at bay, but at what cost? We have the cost of TruGreen, plus now we have Sod that may have to be replaced and broken sprinkler heads. Not happy that TruGreen aerating our new sod even after we called and told them there was new sod. When the tech came out they didn't talk to me just my son who didn't know how to instruct them when here. 2:48 Fixing a sprinkler head. Link for sprinkler heads used. https://amzn.to/33yOYaf 5:43 How to adjust sprinkler head. 1:46 New sod damaged. 0:33 K -Rain Pro-S 4 we used. We have to fix our sprinkler system and choose to use the K-Rain Pro-S 4. 6 of these sprinkler heads only cost $19 and are pretty easy to adjust, and we do just that right after we install the new sprinkler heads. While we take a break from the prop shaft assembly to let Joe finish milling the Delrin liner and the other components, we get back to some planking. As soon as the prop shaft assembly is installed in the stern post, we will be able to hopefully get moving on installing the rest of the planking. In order to get set up for this, we head out to the cedar rack we recently built and sort through the lumber to see what we really have to work with. As we mentioned in the previous video, cedar can have a significant amount of knots and although many of these are not an issue, they are still to be avoided. Therefore, we still need to determine how many boards we have with minimal knots. The other aspect of planking we need to tackle is lining off the hull. There are many ways to plank a wooden boat but it is generally accepted that it should also be done in a way that is aesthetically pleasing. In the manner we are doing it, we need to line off in order to figure out how to diminish each plank to fill the different amount of space at stern, midship and bow. If you are a bit lost, no worries, we were too until we got walked through the process, which we will be relaying in this video. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built.

On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, we spring a leak while we are away from the boat and the Coast Guard stops by to tell us what we are doing right and what we are doing WRONG on our boat. This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching learning how to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas. There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. We are excited (and a little nervous!) to share this journey with you. Size really does matter for your boat propeller, to small and you blow your engine up, to big and you never reach your engines recommended RPM range. In this video, we remove our small propeller off the boat we boat and install the factory propeller on our Alpha One Gen 2 SternDrive. we cover the tools needed to do the job, and what to expect while you work on your boat propeller. With Turkey's incursion into Northern Syria, the Turkish/Syrian border is headline news at the moment for all the wrong reasons, but when we visited in July 2019, it was relatively peaceful and safe. We sincerely hope the recent conflict finds a speedy and peaceful outcome because it is a fantastic part of the world with great people - an internationally important cultural and historical area that deserves protection and peace. Known as 'Zero Point in Time' Göbekli Tepe' is the oldest known monument in the world and changes everything we thought we knew about the evolution of civilisation. Only recently unearthed and shrouded in mystery this 'Temple' site has archaeologists baffled. The visitor centre opened only this year but with the conflict in Syria still raging, there were very few western visitors here - in fact we almost had the place to ourselves! We found the Turks friendly, warm and welcoming and enjoyed genuine Turkish hospitality unburdened by the usual trappings associated with western tourist hotspot. The 24 hour bus journey took us form Bodrum to Sanliurfa, one of Turkey's great pilgrimage cities and we dove headlong into Turkish culture and heritage by checking out the local Bazaar, the Sacred Fish Ponds (Gölbasi area) and the new museum complex. It was definitely one of the highlights of our adventures so far that will be difficult to top! Hi Everyone! Today is the day to get to cleaning that engine! What a job... Since the transmission was so much work, I thought I'd try a few more products to see if they are any help. Welcome back to our video series detailing our 2 month circumnavigation of Vancouver Island on our 37' sailboat, Maya. In this episode we continue our adventure as we stop in Campbell River and traverse Seymour Narrows, which was once called the most treacherous stretch of water in North America. We also stop and do some engine maintenance and discover a neglected maintenance item that we tackle at anchor. Thanks for stopping by and please let us know if you have questions. While I can't say installing Exhaust Bellow is Easy on your Alpha One Sterndrive, this method made it a one-man job. Without trying to film all this we could have replace the sterndrive exhaust below in under 30 mins. We didn't have to remove the sterndrive, we did have to stand on our head to get it done. We have left all the parts used for this below, and all you need is the exhaust bellow, socket to tighten the hose clamps, and zip ties. Things I would have like to have was a swivel socket to more easily tighten the hose clamp closest to the boat. Installing the v-belt on your sterndrive can look like a daunting task, but it is easier than you may think. Here we go over the tools we used to install our v-belt on our Mercruiser 3.0 in a Bayliner Bowrider 175. The safest place to support your engine with a jack to take one side off the engine mount. A way you can get leverage to take out them stubborn bolts. Finally, we cover how you put everything back together and tight the v-belt. As a sailor, I live on and of the ocean. This vast body of water has always fascinated me, I have always felt magically drawn to it since early childhood. During the last years, I have seen the drastic effects that plastic pollution has on our oceans. Shorelines covered in pastic trash, animals getting stuck in trash or dying from digesting it. One way to help fight this problem as an individual is to change the way I consume. I stopped using single use plastic like plastic shopping bags, plastic cups, plastic straws, plastic cuttlery, plastic bottles and I try to keep my bathroom plastic free by using soap bars and bamboo toothbrushes. It may not be the world, but a good step in the right direction IMO. Another way, more effective way, to tackle the problem is to adress governments and companies to reduce the amount of plastic that is being produced. One way to do this is to help to provide data about the extends of the plastic pollution of our word which can be used to show why it is so important to change something. That's why I decided to build a microplastic trawler to takes samples in the ocean during my onward journey. As sailors, we are out there doing our thing anyway. So why not take the time to occasionally launch the microplastic trawler and take a sample. I am sure that if we all did a little bit, we could gather quite the impressive data base. If you also care about our precious oceans and want to help taking samles, you can DOWNLOAD THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL here https://www.5gyres.org/diy-trawl. ORDER THE 335 MICRON NET here https://www.halltechaquatic.com/ The rest of the supplies can be found in any DIY market. Good luck and I hope to see you IN MOCEAN soon :). Sometimes, boatbuilding is all about big showy pieces coming together. But much of the time it is also working with small details. This week, we focus on some of these details that we are going to have to figure out before we move on from the prop shaft assembly that is still coming together. Joe returns to bore out the Delrin on the lathe for out prop shaft liner. While he is working on that, we test out our homemade rivets and the backing iron that Joe made for us. We also talk about another very important aspect of wooden boat building. Plugging knots. We are going to have to work with the cedar that we have and this means finding and plugging dead knots before the planks go on Arabella. Figuring out all these seemingly small details, will save us a lot of time in the long run! Special Youtube thanks this week to Stu from Dangar Marine who came out to interview us for his channel and to Kaitlin McCall from Ouroboros Armory for making our rove set and a small backing iron.
