Guess how many people can we fitin our small sailboat? This is the most people who have ever slept and eaten aboard. Right after finishing work we met up with Cory's family. We got wet on the Lady of the Mist under the Horseshoe Falls and explored the Bird Kingdom in Niagara Falls which is the World's Largest free-flying indoor aviary. You could get so close to all the tropical birds. We even went sailing on Lake Erie with them and our good friends from Newfoundland Will and Katie. What a fun filled week. If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! #wildlyintrepidsailing #smallsailboat #sailinglife ***************************************** Help the videos stay alive by becoming a patron or donating. Following Simon Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/finding_simon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/findingsimon Website: http://simonstiles.com/ Asking Simon - Who are you? I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.
We made our own 1/4 inch square copper rivets to hang Arabella's planks and we are now to the point where we actually get to use them! This is such an exciting time for us as we have planned and worked so hard to make these. We finally get to see the fruits of our labor in their final place. We initially were looking at buying rivets for the task but couldn't find anything that was a quite the right size (according to information from Dave Gerr's The Elements of Boat Strength). We searched all over the place, even overseas but could find anything to our satisfaction, not to mention it was going to come with a steep price tag. So, we decided to make our own out of copper bar stock and with a 32 ton press with a die. It worked perfectly and now we have the beefy rivets we were looking for! It took a little bit of practice to get them just right and figure out what the heads needed to look like and we are still improving, but overall, they look great and we are very happy with the final product. We also finally got the rest of the prop shaft assembly installed. The Delrin liner got two flats cut into it for grip and was pressed into the bored stern post. Everything fit like a charm. Now, we can focus on getting more planks on Arabella and figuring out our trip to Costa Rica to help SAILCARGO in February or 2020. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

And YOU could be sailing SY Esper. : http://followtheboat.com/ftbmates/ Waterspouts are scary things and you really don't want to head into an anchorage with one streaming over the top of it. But that wasn't the worst of our worries. With unknown reefs and rocks scattering the seabed running aground was a distinct possibility, and in an isolated part of Indonesia with no-one around to come to our aid we would have been in a precarious position. A 6kt counter current through the channel towards our planned anchorage meant cranking up the engine to 1500rpm. That's when all the maintenance pays off. If we hadn't kept our Beta engine in full working order we would still be stuck in a deserted bay somewhere in the Java Sea! And while all this was going on, Jamie shows you how we hoist our dinghy and secure it to the davits. Don't forget to follow the boat! On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, we have yet another boat project fail as we attempt to complete the installation of our solar panels and try to finish some of our final projects before heading off to go cruising! This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching learning how to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas. There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. We are excited (and a little nervous!) to share this journey with you. We're finally back with a new video! We finish up our refit for the Carribean having re-built our rudder, replaced our keel bolt washers, replaced a bulkhead, installed lazy jacks, bought 2 new anchors, and serviced our standing rigging. Lots and lots of big jobs, but it all needed to be done in order to prepare the boat for the next year of crusing the tropics! In this video we visit Sailing Uma, get some free water shoes, take the boat out for the frist time all year, test out our hydrostatic release, and service the keel bolts. Lightning Storms at Sea,Family Fun in Greece then Sailing Italy, Sicily & up the Messina Strait Ep52
Sailing the North West coast of Greece from Lefkada to Sivota Mourtos on the Albanian border, we pick up friends and visit our favourite spots along the way - 2 Rocks Bay and Parga. While still beautiful, some anchorages have become over crowded, dirty and even dangerous. We cross the Ionian Sea, avoiding thunder and lightning storms along the way and travel up the Messina Strait between Southern Italy and Northern Sicily, encountering Italian ferries, sword fish boats (Passerelles) and the first significant tides in the Mediterranean Sea! Stormy weather, medical problems and mechanical breakdowns aside (!) we still find time for adventure and boatlife, family fun along the way. Review Cast Iron Fire Pit from CobraCo, but first, we take you on some Florida trails in our jeep on the hunt for firewood. During our unboxing we see our neighborhood eagle at the edge of our pond and we get some really cool video of it. The assembly of this CobraCo cast iron fire pit was pretty easy even though the instructions weren't the best. Our favorite part of this pit was the fire bowl, really heavy cast iron construction. It should last for years to come with proper maintenance and care. Jump To: 1:26 Talk to Ryobi to get a new battery for the chainsaw. 1:50 Hit the trail in the jeep to find wood for our CobraCo fire pit. 4:31 Talk about why we chose the CobraCo fire pit. 6:05 We video a Bald Eagle near our pond. 6:32 Unbox the CobraCo fire pit. 9:04 Put the CobraCo fire pit together. 10:10 We build a fire in the CobraCo fire pit then give you our thoughts on this pit, we also go over what works well to light this fire pit. 12:34 Closing the video and advertizing things to come. It was an insane celebration because it's exactly what our country needed. What's left on our list you may ask?? 1. Water-maker Installation 2.Install the engines 3.Name goes on 4.Epoxy hull before anti fouling 5. Anti fouling goes on See ya next week!! After our glue failure on the scarf joints for the planks, we also had some glue failure on the graving pieces. This time though, it was with a new and good batch of Resorcinol. So, we were not quite sure what the problem was at first. We later realized that the clamping pressure was being lost due to shrinking in the heat boxes. Since Resorcinol needs, high clamping pressure, this was resulting in a poor glue joint which would then fail. We had to figure out a good solution to this problem so we reached out to Jamestown Distributors, who promptly sent us a couple batches of Epoxies to test (including some one that was not their own!). We ended up doing a test of all the epoxies and these resulted in some very strong glue bonds for our graving pieces! We will move forward using epoxy for the graving pieces but still use Resorcinol for the scarf joints on the oak planks. Fresh Resorcinol has a good track record with oak, unlike epoxy. As all the scarf joints overlap frames and get rivets through them anyways, and all the graving pieces mate up to the next plank, this system should work very well! Very big thank you to Jamestown Distributor for sending us the epoxy samples on the house! And no, this is not a sponsored video! They are just happy to help out. 960 WATTS of BLAZING SOLAR POWER! DIY INSTALL on our 46' LIVEABOARD SAILBOAT! and . ERIC ROCKS TIPSY McSWAY'S!! Well, we've been building up to this one for a while...so many projects and so many preparations for our departure from the US in less than 6 weeks as we head to the Bahamas, the Caribbean and beyond. But few projects will have as big of a day to day impact as adding solar to our sailboat. 960 watts of solar to be exact. We don't plan on spending much time at all in marinas and want to sip fuel as conservatively as possible, which means we need some way to keep those batteries topped off. You may have seen Episodes 75 and 76 where we installed our stern arch to support both dinghy and solar...now it's finally time to install the panels. It some planning and added structure to squeeze all three up there, but we made it work. As a bonus, we give you a little peek at Eric's short term regular gig and the local favorite bar/restaurant, Tipsy McSway's. It became a Sunday haunt for all our marina friends!! Enjoy!! And be sure to SUBSCRIBE for WEEKLY CONTENT EVERY FRIDAY! Cheers!! Thanks for watching SailAway, the travel documentary of an adventurous sailing couple, plus toddler and dog, sailing the world! The Turkish coast is one of the most beautiful areas in the Mediterranean. Especially for sailors. There are dozens of lovely anchor spots. Here are seven of them, all located between Kaş and Kekova, filmed with a drone. Gökkaya Koyu, Karaloz Koyu, Hamidiye Koyu, Üçağız, Polemos Bükü, Limanağzı and Kaş. All located within the range of a few miles.

The Miserable Mile is a stretch of super busy waterway near Ft Myers with an incredibly narrow channel. Powerboats fly this way and that, wakes churn the water, and straying from the channel even a few feet means running hard aground. In short, it’s quite aptly named! We have a grand time sailing regardless, with the sun out and lovely wind. After pulling into a slip in Ft Myers Beach, we start fixing up our engine, Mr. Beke, who’s in need of some maintenance and repairs. Getting prepped for our next overnight sail — to Key West!
So I decided to step out of my comfort zone and service our 9.9 Yamaha High Thrust Engines. No easy task with zero experience but with the help of google and Youtube I give it a go. Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** Cruising as we're used to isn't really allowed in Sri Lanka as there are very limited ports you can stop at. Instead, we decided to use Trincomalee as a base to explore inland, something we rarely get to do! With our friends Kimi and Trevor from s/v Slow Flight, we set off on an incredible tour of this beautiful country. Our first day was spent in the ancient city of Anuradhapura, seeing a sacred Buddhist temple and our first Stupa. That by itself would have been a lot, but Kimi REALLY wanted to see elephants, and with Minneriya National Park close by, we hired a Jeep and went off on a mini-safari. Thanks for watching! As far as I know this is the first Outremer model ever built. She is a very simple, fast, ocean going catamaran. Although she's in ROUGH shape and she'll never be as nice as a new catamaran, she does have potential to be a great racer/cruiser if someone is willing to put the time, money, and effort into restoring her. It's unfortunate that this project was abandoned by the previous owner, but it could be the perfect opportunity for someone to pick this boat up dirt cheap. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Make sure you make an informed decision on your next boat with this tool: http://sailingsoulianis.com/shop/ltl-boat-buying-dashboard/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Current asking price: $89,000 Contact info for Derek Escher: 954-589-2343 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. After 10 days of sailing from SC to Fl, we finally make it to our destination in Riviera Beach, FL but not before both of our engines stop working and we get caught in a 30 knot squall. Once we arrive to the boatyard we get ready to bottom paint the catamaran ourselves, we remove the boot stripe and change the seals and oil of the sail drives. ☺ Support our production and help our channel grow by giving this video a THUMBS UP and SUBSCRIBING to our channel! ☺ Join our Patreon crew to get on board with us! ☞ https://www.patreon.com/livinghakuna Find our gear here: ☞ https://livinghakuna.com/our-gear/ ⇩ SUBSCRIBE ⇩ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrlbNFmD2FNK9srrkjTnIPA?sub_confirmation=1 ☞ Instagram: https://instagram.com/LivingHakuna/ ☞ Facebook: https://facebook.com/LivingHakuna ☞ Website: https://www.livinghakuna.com ☞ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/livinghakuna

In our last travel blog we sailed through a storm into Folegandros so we decided to stay a while - to let the storm pass! - and travel inland to visit the main town... and what a gem! But having spent too long in Turkey we needed to get through Greece and across the Mediterranean before winter so we did a whistle stop sail through the Dodecanese, Cyclades, Peloponnese and onto the Ionian Islands, meeting up with friends along the way. Yewan did his first night watch and the kids decide to set up their own business selling homemade lemonade and banana cake on the beach! We replace our Oil Sending Unit, added a Fuel Filter, replace our alternator, and rig up a PVC pipe on our 2004 Bayliner Bowrider 175. We know we have good oil pressure because we have an oil pressure test kit that verified it on this boat. We did take the boat out using only the oil pressure test kit out on the water but found it leaked a little oil after running for a while. While our old oil pressure sending unit on our boat was very rusty this did not worry me. What did worry me was that at idle it would not tell us we had pressure, at RPM it would bounce between 0 and 40 psi. After installing the new oil pressure sending unit we did return oil pressure to our gauge. While we were looking over the Mercruiser 3.0 engine and making sure things were all tight we saw we didn't have a fuel filter. We have not rebuilt the carburetor on this engine and really don't want to if not needed. May have to get a larger fuel filter later, this one was a little small for our fuel line, and when we install a metal fuel line we will move the fuel filter closer to the gas tank on our boat. Replaced or alternator on this old boat, and the new one fit perfectly supplied us with 13 volts on the dash and was half the cost of the OEM alternator. Not really that much else to say about our new boat alternator on our Bayliner Bowrider 175 except it worked. Lastly, we put on PVC hose running to our breather, yes we know the hose we use isn't ideal, but we will replace it. This will keep oil from leaking on top of our valve cover until we get the proper hose. Need to drill a big hole?... BORING! That's right, we are final to the point of boring out the stern post for our prop shaft. We were very much looking forward to this set up and seeing how this works. We put together a setup that included a long boring bar with multiple different cutter attachments we could switch in and out then mounted that bar through the drilled hole in the stern post, sandwiched between two bearings to guide it. Once that was set up we built a sled to carry the Hole Hawg drill we used to power the boring bar. The whole setup worked like a charm! With that done, we were able to get back to working on scarfing up the next plank as well as shaping the stern post to accept the cutless bearing housing. Rowan was so excited to finally arrive in Spain to pick up her new Gaston Luga backpack from Sweden. This collaboration is her first unboxing and who knows, could kickstart a new career as a YouTube influencer!.. but only if she can persuade SOMEONE to buy one ;) We've turned down many collaborations before now because they don't really fit with our lifestyle (costume jewellery anyone?!) but we think these backpacks are pretty practical and cool for a fashion conscious traveller like Rowan. So what'ya think? ;).. if comments are disabled here on YouTube (not by us!) please visit our Facebook page to leave feedback: https://www.facebook.com/mothershipadrift Get 15% off by visiting https://gastonluga.com and using the discount code: MOTHERSHIP15 Who are Gaston Luga?
We were really excited to take a look at this catamaran. At an estimated new MSRP of between $300,000 - $350,000, the Seawind 1160 Lite is one of the most affordable new catamarans out there. We wish that more catamaran companies would make smaller and more affordable ocean-going catamarans. The general theme of the Annapolis boat show was the "bigger is better" mentality which we certainly don't agree with, naturally so seeing a catamaran of this size was a nice breath of fresh air. Head to https://squarespace.com/learningthelines to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code "learningthelines.” This boat is awesome, although in our personal opinions it begs the question... "why?" It has a lot of great features, but we see it as a monohull trying too hard to be a catamaran, and for the cost of this boat, you can get a really nice cat. What do YOU think?
