For good reason the 78 is an immensely popular model of the West Bay Sonship line of yachts. She shows exceedingly well in all areas. Bruno Belmont, who heads up their product development, confirmed that the new Lagoon generation will be abandoning the idea of the aft-set rig and the self-tacking jib. This choice is far from an obvious one: in terms of outright performance, the “old” configuration is better. But when it comes to propelling a relatively heavy catamaran in cruising mode, this translates into a very tall rig, XXL-dimensioned coachroof reinforcement, and a jib that is a challenge to trim properly... The Lagoon 51, despite the mast being 4¼ feet (1.3 m) shorter, will have a sail area that is barely any smaller compared to that of the 50 - whose hulls and part of the deck layout it assumes. Also, the new model will come in at almost a ton less in displacement. The flybridge of the 51 becomes a real living area, featuring reversible helm rests. Numerous solar panels are in evidence, and these are custom cut to reconcile aesthetics and efficiency (3,400 Wp). The hulls have been lengthened to offer wide sugarscoops, that can be extended by the hydraulic platform. Access from the dock is now much easier. Inside, the disappearance of the Lagoon 50's imposing mast support strut benefits the new nacelle, which is finished in Alpi sand oak. Customer feedback on the 50 (of which 300 units have been built and sold!) has allowed Lagoon to rework 70 points, such as the holding tanks, which are now gravitational (and not under the floors). The standard layout retains one owner's cabin, to starboard, and three guest cabins to port - other layouts are available. We also notice that the price offer is simpler and clearer, with 80 HP motors proposed as standard. Well, we are Kate and Curtis. We both sold up and headed out to sea, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope. We brought our mixed rescue dog along with us as she loves sailing and swimming too! Our boat is a year 2000 J Boats J/46. We searched for 3 years for our perfect sailboat for sale, when we found it, we knew it was the one. We spent 6 months re-fitting it in Rhode Island and then went for our shakedown voyage in Maine. We stopped in Annapolis for a bit to do some more refit work and offshore modifications, then we set off to the open sea. We went to the Bahamas, Miami, US Virgin Islands, BVI, Grenada, Carriacou, St. Maarten, where we enjoyed outdoor adventures, scuba diving, and have now did an Atlantic Crossing to the Azores where we had a chance to fly our DJI drone (and learned how to fly a drone from a boat) and one of our favorite past times, mountain biking. After leaving the Azores we sailed to Tenerife. From there we have left on a huge voyage, transatlantic again, this time to South America as we head for our goal of rounding cape horn to enter the pacific ocean. We have sailed over 10,000 bluewater miles to date. We watched other sailing channels before we left as well. We even considered van life, a tiny home, or a motorhome / rv. Some of the channels we enjoyed were Gone with the Wynns, Project Atticus, and MJ Sailing. We didn't really set out to be influencers, but we wanted to return the good karma and pass our inspiration and knowledge along. Wir sind gespannt auf euer feedback. ▬ Über diesen Film ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Der Besuch beginnt mit einer ordentlichen Verspätung des Flugzeuges aus Paris und dem Verlust des Reisegepäckes. Irgendwann ist es so spät, dass trotz Covid19 keiner uns mehr aufhält ins verwaiste Flughafengebäude vorzudringen. Caro und Kaja sind mit Abstand die letzten, die den Airport verlassen. Anlässlich des Besuches liegt MariaNoa in der Marina Bas-de-Fort und wir haben ein Auto gemietet. So fahren wir am nächsten Vormittag in den Süden von La Basse Terre und besuchen im dortigen Regenwald das Naturschutzgebiet und den Wasserfall Chutes du Carbet. Auf dem Weg fahren wir bei Capesterre belle Eau durch eine faszinierende Palmenallee mit riesigen Palmen. Eigentlich lieben wir die unbefestigten Trampelpfade durch den Regenwald. Hier aber sind die Wege hervorragend präpariert und das Naturschutzgebiet erläutert. So holen wir uns ausnahmsweise keine dreckigen Schuhe und drohen nicht im Matsch auszurutschen. Der Weg zum Wasserfall führt durch eine faszinierende Pflanzenwelt. Alles ist so satt und üppig. Die Pflanzen sowie jedes einzelne Blatt so riesig, dass wir uns dahinter verstecken können. Wir wähnen uns im Dschungel von Yurassic Park und erwarten jeden Moment, dass die Raptoren um die Ecke kommen. Der Chutes du Carbet hat eine gewaltige Fallhöhe. Leider kann man ihn nur aus gewisser Entfernung bewundern. Da wir noch etwas Zeit haben, fahren wir an den Plage de la Caravelle. Er gilt als einer der schönsten Strände von Guadeloupe. Am nächsten Morgen verholen wir nach Le Gosier. Da die kleine vorgelagerte Insel gleich um die Ecke liegt, lohnt es sich nicht, die Segel zu setzen. Außerdem geht es nach Osten also gegenan. Hinter ausgedehnten Flachs ankert man hier zwar nicht windgeschützt, Schwell gibt es aber nahezu keinen. Zeit um die Sicherheitseinweisung nachzuholen. Habt Ihr konkrete Fragen? Brigitta war natürlich erst einmal vollkommen überrascht, obwohl eine Weltumsegelung wesentlich besser in Ihr berufliches Leben als Vorruheständlerin passte als in meins. In den letzten 6 Monaten hat Sie aber eine erstaunliche Entwicklung hinter sich gebracht und freut sich auf unser großes Abenteuer genau wie ich. Well, it’s taken us nearly 3 years to get this boat refit complete!! Saoirse is now a fully refitted 38’ Island Spirit Catamaran. Her hull dates back to 1999 but because she was entirely stripped, even the original bulkheads were removed and replaced she is now registered as a 2020 model. Absolutely everything on her was brand new at the time of the build. The sugar scoops were beautifully extended before we purchased her, giving us awesome platforms for fish/diving/ swimming off of. And even the mast and rigging is all brand new. Getting back to the refit, I now realize why people had such a rye smile on their faces in the beginning, when they asked how long we expected it to take? We very confidently told everyone - 8 months!!🤦🏼‍♀️. We figured we had built houses in less time than that, how long could it possibly take to refit a yacht??? Little did we know - and how much have we learnt since then⛵️ So, here she is, in all her 99,9%-completed-state glory. We are thrilled with how she turned out and it’s made all the hard work so worth it. When we look back at the ‘before’ state of Saoirse in our old pics and videos, we wonder WHAT would have possessed us to go into this project with the confidence that we did?? If we knew then what we know now, would we do it again? The jury is still out but probably not. Although, it’s hard to say because we really have enjoyed this process, and are thrilled that we know her from the very bottom up, but I think we also feel now - ‘been there, don’t that’ and wouldn’t take on a project like it again🤣 So welcome to Saoirse - we hope you find the tour interesting.
