Hier in der Karibik bedeutet nahezu jeder etwas längere Törn, dass Ländergrenzen überschritten werden. Die Sicher Reisen APP des Auswärtigen Amtes informiert aktuell über alle Voraussetzungen und Einreisebestimmungen des jeweiligen Landes und verlinkt auf entsprechende nationale Seiten. In Corona-Zeiten ein absolutes Muss. Marine Traffic zeigt nicht nur, wo sich befreundete Yachten aktuell aufhalten, wo viele Yachten und wo wenige Yachten sind. Mit Marine Traffic messen wir die Entfernung zum Ziel, um unter Annahme einer Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit die Reisezeit zu kalkulieren. Da wir gerne bei Tageslicht im Zielgebiet ankommen, kann bei mehrtägigen Törns der Abfahrtszeitpunkt bestimmt werden. Auch über die App Vessel Finder können alle Yachten lokalisiert werden, die ein AIS-Signal aussenden. Marine Traffic sowie Vessel Finder sind kostenlose Apps privater Anbieter. Leider sind sie deshalb lückenhaft, wie z.B. hier im Norden der British Virgin Islands. Windy gibt Auskunft über Windstärken, Böen und Wellenhöhen in dem zu befahrenden Seegebiet. Obwohl dies 9 Tage im Voraus erfolgt, sollte einem immer bewusst sein, dass die zugrunde liegenden Wettermodelle eine einigermaßen seriöse Vorhersage maximal 5 Tage im Voraus errechnen können. The water changes color as we close in and sadly bypass the large city of Rio de Janeiro. Our boat dog, Roxy, finally get's some sniffs of land, but is it just a teaser? Finally, we spot a protected cove and the draw of a full night of sleep no longer offshore changing shifts is so ever tempting, so we launch the drone and inspect. For those wondering about our boat damage from the collision, keep watching our channel to discover the damage exactly the moment we do! So who is this crazy sailing couple making fun videos to share? Well, we are Kate and Curtis. We both sold up and headed out to sea, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope. We brought our mixed rescue dog along with us as she loves sailing and swimming too! Our boat is a year 2000 J Boats J/46. We searched for 3 years for our perfect sailboat for sale, when we found it, we knew it was the one. We spent 6 months re-fitting it in Rhode Island and then went for our shakedown voyage in Maine. We stopped in Annapolis for a bit to do some more refit work and offshore modifications, then we set off to the open sea. We went to the Bahamas, Miami, US Virgin Islands, BVI, Grenada, Carriacou, St. Maarten, where we enjoyed outdoor adventures, scuba diving, and have now did an Atlantic Crossing to the Azores where we had a chance to fly our DJI drone (and learned how to fly a drone from a boat) and one of our favorite past times, mountain biking. After leaving the Azores we sailed to Tenerife. From there we have left on a huge voyage, transatlantic again, this time to South America as we head for our goal of rounding cape horn to enter the pacific ocean. John Heasman is an old friend of RCSSC member Eric Andrew and we all met up recently on a chance sail on a bright and breezy day - you may have seen the recent video on this channel. I asked John if he would like to tell us about his boat and provide a few more photos - these are his words. "My boat, 'Cerafina', is a Swale Pilot, a Gaff Cutter, built ( circa 2003 ) by John Pollitt of JEP Marine, on the Swale in Kent, a tide channel between the Isle of Sheppey and Kent. She is 5m boat length, 6m with bow sprit, with a 1.89m beam. An easy to use trailer sailer. Her hull design is taken from an old rowing lifeboat off a decommissioned Welsh lightship. A mould was made of the lifeboat hull, which John Pollitt bought. He then designed and converted the hull into a beautiful gaff cutter. They are clinker look, grip hulls, with cream internals and mahogany gunwales and seats. Sadly they are no longer manufactured. Quite a few were built in the late 1990’s through to 2008 / 10. In 2020 there were three Swale Pilots based at RSC. Two have since sadly moved with their owners. Cerafina is currently the only one now left at the club. They do come up for sale fairly infrequently, one or two every couple of years, if you watch the usual boat sale websites. Typisch für einen Segelurlaub hier, ist daher das Buchtenhopping. In allen relevanten Buchten sind Mooringbojen ausgebracht. Da wir außerhalb der Saison hier unterwegs sind, sind in den meisten Buchten die Bojen leer, verhindern aber das Ankern. Es ist eine Herausforderung einen Ankerplatz zu finden, der einerseits im Sand liegt und keine Korallen beschädigt und anderseits beim nächtlichen Schwöjen nicht dazu führt, dass die Ankerkette sich um die nächst gelegene Bojenbefestigung wickelt. Nach dem Einklarieren starten wir von Roadtown kommend Richtung Norman Island, wo wir zunächst neben einem Restaurantschiff zu liegen kommen. Wider Erwarten erfreut sich das Schiff reger Besuchsnachfrage, sodass wir noch am selben Tag um die Ecke neben ein ruhigeres Bojenfeld verholen. Von Norman Island kommend kreuzen wir zur Valley Trunk Bay auf der Insel Virgin Gorda. Hier ankern wir direkt neben der Hauptattraktion der BVI der von Riesenhand hingeworfenen Granitfelsen „The Bath“. Soweit kennt ihr unsere Reise aus dem ersten Film über die British Virgin Islands. Von der Valley Trunk Bay verlegen wir nur wenige Meilen zur Long Bay. Eine kleine gut geschützte Bucht, in der wir über einem als künstlichem Riff versenkten Schiff, das Pearl Harbour überstanden hat, schnorcheln. Es geht weiter in den Gordon Sound, der als Hurrican Hole genannt wird. Um sich vor einem Hurrican zu schützen bedarf es einer intensiven Uferbepflanzung mit Mangroven. Diese fehlt jedoch nahezu vollständig. Den Törn nutzen wir, um alle Segelmanöver zu üben. Wir ankern unweit Saba Rock einem Felsen, der vollständig von einem erst kürzlich neu eröffneten sehr exklusiven Restaurant überbaut ist. Habt Ihr konkrete Fragen? OUR SCORING CATEGORIES 1) BUILD QUALITY - This encompasses both the interior and exterior and the overall quality and durability of items like deck hardware, mechanical systems, decking, windows, cabinetry and hardware, flooring, overall surfaces and materials. 2) SAILABILITY - This focuses primarily on the ergonomics of operating the vessel: the location and orientation of sail handling hardware, helm position and visibility, plus overall performance as reported (these are tried and tested boats, so there is plenty of info out there). We believe from our personal experience with many cat owner friends that these boats are capable of sailing quite well when sailed properly, especially on well-planned passages...does this boat make it easy for the crew to do so? 3) TRAMPOLINE! - We approach this with some humor because obviously young kids LOVE the trampolines, and it's Rivers' PRIMARY reason for wanting a cat. That said, the attributes of the foredeck on a cat play heavily into the enjoyment of the boat at anchor. We've been guests on many cats where the kids enjoyed not only bouncing and rolling about on the tramps, but just hanging out and doing their thing, while the adults hang out on the perimeter. This is one of those "extra" spaces on a cat which make it as much a home as a boat, especially if the kids enjoy it. 4) LIVEABILITY - This category encompasses those things that make living on a boat a joy as opposed to a chore. Overall space, intelligent layout, comfort in the lounging areas and the cabins, plentiful storage in numerous areas, a generous galley, easy access to maintenance areas, and simple dinghy lifting for night security and for underway. 5) THE X-FACTORS - This is NOT a typical review category but it should be. This is all about human connection with what is not just a boat, but possibly a home. Do we get the "feels" when we first walk inside? Can we immediately imagine life here and does it makes us smile? A lot of factors play into this and most are not quantifiable. But there are definitely boats that can tick most or even all the boxes, yet still have ZERO X-Factor. If you don't love it, it doesn't matter how perfect it may be on paper. All of these categories will be scored by Loren and I base on 5 thumbs (yeah, it's dumb, but it's also fun) then added together.
