We're taking on one of the most notorious stretches of water in the United States — Cape Hatteras! After some last-minute maintenance and final preparations in Cape Charles, Virginia, we set off on a 230-mile, 33-hour offshore passage around Cape Hatteras, a place infamous for dangerous seas, unpredictable weather, and countless shipwrecks. But we got lucky! The weather was almost TOO calm. With barely enough wind to fill our sails, we ended up motoring through one of the most feared stretches of coastline on the East Coast. After 33 hours at sea, we finally arrive in Beaufort, North Carolina, where we tie up, stretch our legs, and let the dogs enjoy some much-needed time on land! That's the question Katia Damborsky explores as she steps aboard the brand-new Lazzara UHV 100 in Turkey for an exclusive first look inside. UHV stands for Ultra High Volume, and Lazzara has made particularly good use of the space available on this 30.5-metre yacht. With approximately 400 square metres of usable space, unusually generous head heights and wide passageways, the UHV 100 has proportions that you would normally associate with a much larger vessel. The yacht is built using advanced composite materials, with an emphasis on durability, structural integrity and long-term reliability. Lazzara also manufactures most of its components in-house rather than relying heavily on subcontractors, allowing the shipyard to maintain close control over construction and finishing. Katia begins her tour on the foredeck, where a large lounging area and Jacuzzi take advantage of the yacht's elevated position above the water. The technical equipment is cleverly recessed, keeping the working areas separate from the spaces used by guests. The upper deck offers a particularly generous lounge, complete with a bar, cinema area and games table. Outside, there is another entertainment area with a concealed television, grill and retractable shade. The wheelhouse is equally impressive, with a striking curved staircase and a design that feels more like something you would find aboard a considerably larger yacht. Inside, the attention to detail becomes even more apparent. Different wood finishes distinguish the decks, while large windows, floating floors and carefully selected materials contribute to the feeling of space and quiet throughout the yacht. The full-beam owner's suite is located forward on the main deck, with panoramic views, two walk-in wardrobes and a marble bathroom. Four additional guest cabins are situated on the lower deck, bringing the total to five. She also explores the galley, which has been designed with family use and extended cruising in mind, before visiting the crew accommodation and engine room. And it is in the engine room that some of Lazzara's most interesting engineering decisions become clear. Redundant systems, a centralised seawater intake and extensive use of hard piping demonstrate the shipyard's approach to building yachts intended to remain dependable over many years. Having previously visited the smaller UHV 87, Katia is already familiar with Lazzara's construction philosophy. But the UHV 100 takes that approach further, combining the practicality of a long-range cruising yacht with the space and finish of a much larger superyacht. ► Among the 41 multihulls on display at the 11th edition of the Pre-Owned Multihull and Refit Show in Canet-en-Roussillon, we discovered a bluewater cruising catamaran offered for sale by Catherine Relandeau of CathYacht. Let's take a guided tour! ► Meet Blue Zone, a 2011 Lagoon 620, hull #22, which has the distinction of having always been privately owned and operated. Her current Owners, a couple from Luxembourg, have enjoyed the yacht for the past seven years, mainly in the Mediterranean, with a professional crew employed year-round. But what really sets this catamaran apart is the attention paid to optimizing her equipment. The Owner, who has a particular interest in technical matters, has invested in numerous upgrades with three priorities in mind: safety, self-sufficiency and weight management. ► In terms of safety, Blue Zone features a particularly sophisticated lightning protection system, with devices connected to dedicated grounding plates. Her standing rigging is rod-type, while both the mast and boom are made of carbon fiber. ► For energy autonomy, the catamaran is equipped with a 33 kWh Mastervolt lithium battery bank and 3.7 kWp of solar panels mounted on a custom-built hardtop. Their particularly open installation promotes airflow and therefore improves efficiency. ► Presented at the 11th edition of Les Occasions du Multicoque et du Refit in Canet-en-Roussillon, Macuba is a 1998 Nautitech 395 that's well worth a closer look. This almost 40-foot (12 m) catamaran belongs to the first generation of models from the French builder, retaining its essential characteristics: relatively slender hulls, moderate displacement and a bluewater cruising program. ► Designed by Mortain & Mavrikios and launched in 1996, approximately 80 Nautitech 395s are believed to have been built before the model was replaced by the Nautitech 40 in 2003. Its deck layout, with two helm stations positioned far aft and a cockpit protected by a rigid extension of the coachroof, already anticipated some of the features found on modern Nautitech catamarans. ► Refitted for an Atlantic Crossing What makes Macuba special? She had been prepared for an Atlantic circuit. Her Owner therefore undertook an extensive upgrade program between 2022 and 2026, with the aim of creating a self-sufficient catamaran ready to head offshore. ► The genoa dates from 2022, while the mainsail is brand-new for 2026. The standing rigging was replaced in 2022, and much of the running rigging has been renewed or serviced. The two 30 hp Yanmar engines, installed in 2012 and each showing approximately 1,600 hours, have also undergone a thorough overhaul. The saildrive seals were replaced, and the engines were removed to allow work including repainting the engine compartments. A particularly welcome improvement on a catamaran of this age. ► Greater Self-Sufficiency Preparations for extended cruising went well beyond the propulsion systems. Macuba is equipped with 700 Wp of solar panels connected to a lithium battery. An additional refrigerator has also been installed to increase fresh food storage capacity, while the navigation electronics have been upgraded. ► Inside, we find a four-double-cabin layout, well suited to family cruising or sailing with friends. Andiamo' is a 2006 Hanse 370e, listed exclusively for sale with YOTI on Pittwater. https://www.yoti.com.au/listing/hanse-370e-andiamo-1 Hanse has become one of the world's largest and most successful production yacht builders, and the 370e is a Judel/Vrolijk design that blends easy handling with genuine sailing performance. It is a very popular model, thanks to its epoxy hull construction, which creates a strong hull with a reduced chance of osmosis. 'Andiamo' has had significant work in recent years. The standing rigging and most of the running rigging were replaced in 2021, and she carries a fully battened tri-radial mainsail (2022), a self-tacking tri-radial jib, a No. 2 genoa (2012) and a Rolly Tasker Code 0 in a sock (2024). Sail handling is made easy with six winches in the cockpit, one of which is electric and used to hoist the mainsail. A really nice sailing feature on this particular Hanse is that she was specified with additional genoa tracks as well as the self-tacking track. To protect the cockpit from the elements, there is a beautiful bimini and dodger with a linksheet in between, and side clears that were new in 2023. Electronics include a Garmin GPSMAP chartplotter down below and Garmin instrument displays at the helm (2018), a Simrad AP16 autopilot, and AIS transmit and receive, fitted in 2022. You can link a tablet wirelessly to the Garmin down below and use it at the helm while sailing. The boat is powered by three 120Ah deep cycle house batteries and an additional engine start battery, which can be linked in an emergency. The bimini has a 100W solar panel on top, and the boat comes with a small 300W portable inverter. Below, the layout is two double cabins plus a double berth in the saloon. The galley has a gimballed two-burner stove and oven, a large 12v fridge and twin sinks. The head has an electric toilet (new macerator 2022) and a hot and cold shower, and there is another shower on the transom. New saloon upholstery was fitted in 2018 and a new Isotherm hot water service in 2024. A drop-down stern access stair makes boarding from the dinghy or dock simple, and a Truekit Navigator 2.5m inflatable with a Tohatsu 6hp outboard is included. The Yanmar 3YM30 has approximately 1,300 hours, and both the engine service and antifoul are dated October 2026. 'Andiamo' would suit those looking for a well-equipped, easy-to-sail cruiser for Pittwater and the coast. Rather than concentrating primarily on new European production yachts or large custom superyachts, Fort Lauderdale brings together almost every part of the American boating market, from serious offshore fishing boats to some of the largest yachts in the world. Following our previews of the Cannes Yachting Festival and Monaco Yacht Show, I wanted to look at what makes Fort Lauderdale different and which yachts I would particularly recommend seeing this year. The show runs from 28 October to 1 November, with displays spread across several locations, including Bahia Mar, Hall of Fame Marina, Las Olas Marina, Pier Sixty-Six and Superyacht Village. We start with American builders, including Westport and its new 41-metre Westport 135, before looking at Ocean Alexander's new 40P and 30P models, both making their world debuts. Azimut is bringing 13 yachts to the show, ranging from the high-performance Verve 48 to the Grande 36M. Princess also has two interesting debuts, including the X90 and the new C48 Open, the British builder's first outboard-powered centre console. But Fort Lauderdale is also where you find yachts that are particularly important to the American market. We look at the Viking 70 Convertible, designed for serious offshore fishing while still offering the accommodation expected of a luxury motor yacht. At the larger end of the show, Oceanco is bringing the 92.9-metre DRA, formerly known as EQUANIMITY and TRANQUILITY. Following an extensive rebuild, she has been transformed into a vessel equipped for diving, scientific research and marine exploration. I also look at some of the brokerage yachts worth visiting, including the 64-metre Royal Hakvoort SCOUT, offered for sale through Fraser, and the Trinity-built SUMMER DANCE, available through Northrop & Johnson. There is also a look at the enormous range of smaller boats, power catamarans, tenders, outboard-powered centre consoles and marine equipment that make Fort Lauderdale so different from the European shows. After discovering that Salloo’s windlass was seized, we made the decision to pivot our plans. Originally, we intended to move Salloo 400 nautical miles north from the Gold Coast to Gladstone, where we planned to complete the refit. Instead, we decided to bring our sailing catamaran, SV Emma James, 400 nautical miles south from Gladstone to the Gold Coast, and now we are headed back to Gladstone to bring the sailboat south to the Gold Coast. Before we leave Salloo, we spend some time measuring the accommodation level and starting to work out the new interior layout. The current layout has five cabins, three showers and two toilets. Our plan is to transform this into three larger cabins, two showers, two toilets, a dedicated office and laundry, and plenty of storage, including a much larger master cabin and space for guests, making the space usable for us.
