Lost boys at crazy Patong beach - Sailing Thailand We sailed our live aboard sailing catamaran to Thailand's largest island Phuket, famous for it's beaches, vibrant nightlife, seafood and big budda. After checking in and a tasty Pad Thai lunch at the side of the road, we hired scooters, our favourite mode of transport while sailing South East Asia and drove across the island, following google maps to what we hoped would be an elephant sanctuary. Instead, however, google maps had directed us to the notorious Patong Beach, home to the bright lights and seedy bars of crazy Bangla Road. Even our sailing teenagers felt scarred by the whole affair. Maybe it was watching Rob eat a fried scorpion though!? We also remembered Rob's brother Kerry and his girlfriend Gail who visited Patong beach many years ago, before it became a tourist Mecca. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. We leave Port Arthur and head south to explore the massive cliffs of Cape Pillar and Cathedral Rock. Flying the drone with No Regrets at the base of the huge cliffs for a persepctive of size we get some awesome footage.
