Harrisburg romps as William Penn self-destructs York, PA - There was little to dissect after it was over. The scoreboard illuminated a clear picture of the mismatch that had taken place at Small Athletic Field. Harrisburg 39, William Penn 0. You could call it a case of one team imposing its will, and you'd probably be right. The Cougars were bigger, faster and -- after a two-loss start to the season -- hungrier. Then again, William Penn never gave itself much of a chance. One week after a thrilling -- and seemingly momentum-building -- win at J.P. McCaskey, the Bearcats (1-2) bumbled through four self-destructive quarters. They threw interceptions, fumbled footballs and missed tackles. Something as simple as a snap to the quarterback became a chore. William Penn committed seven turnovers in all, a number that could have been even higher if not for some dropped interceptions and a few of their own fumbles the Bearcats jumped on. Meanwhile, Harrisburg's offense gashed William Penn for 312 yards and several long scoring plays. "I said it's going to come down to who can make plays and who can defend them," Bearcats coach Shawn Heinold said. "We couldn't defend them or make them." The miscues started almost immediately. On its first drive of the game, William Penn darted down to the Cougars 4-yard line. But a low pitch by quarterback Tavon Parker squirted onto the turf and into the arms of a Harrisburg defender. It set the tone for the rest of the night, both for Parker and his teammates. The junior, who led the YAIAA in passing through two weeks, completed 6-of-14 passes for 97 yards and a pair of picks. "He's trying to put it on him, but it's not true," Heinold said. "We got a whole lot of issues." Issues that were promptly exposed. The Bearcats couldn't keep stride with a speedy Harrisburg attack that finally showcased its big-play potential. (The Cougars managed a combined 19 points in their first two games.) Kyle Cook, making his first start at quarterback for Harrisburg (1-2), began the barrage. He fired a deep cross to Marcel Brown Jr., who raced 57 yards to open the scoring in the first quarter. But the real dagger came right before halftime. On a fourth-and-15 from the Bearcats 27-yard line, Cook zipped a slant pass to running back Vidal Little. A missed tackle later, Little trotted into the end zone with just 13.2 seconds left in the half. That pumped Harrisburg's lead to 20-0. Little added an 84-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. All five of Harrisburg's offensive scores came on plays of 19 yards or more. "We have a talented team," said Cook, who wrapped up his night with 177 passing yards and three touchdown throws. Meanwhile, William Penn's offense crumbled. The Bearcats had minus-13 total yards after the first quarter. They finished with 81 yards for the game. "It's a long season," Heinold said. "I told them, 'They're 0-2. We're going to have to come in here and match their intensity.' And we didn't. "We just got to be positive and move forward and continue to get better."
