After spending over 65% of our nights at anchor over the past year, we've learned that a peaceful night's sleep isn't about luck it's about having an anchoring system you can trust. A midnight rain squall between Singapore and Malaysia pushed our setup to its limits. With winds reaching 40–45 knots, our snubber failed, our anchor started dragging, and we came dangerously close to drifting into Singapore. Myanmar is one of the last true frontiers in Southeast Asian diving, and this is your look at what it's like to dive it. The Mergui Archipelago is over 800 islands scattered across 36,000 square kilometres of the Andaman Sea, most of them uninhabited. On board Thailand Master, a 34m liveaboard accommodating 18 divers, you'll cruise into waters that see a fraction of the traffic of neighbouring Thailand or Indonesia: limited phone signal, few other boats, and genuine frontier diving once you're underway. Thailand Master has 7 cabins across twin, double and quad configurations, a spacious dive deck with plenty of storage for gear, and a covered, shaded outdoor dining area at the stern for taking in the views. Nitrox is available on board, along with a dedicated camera room, and the crew prepare a daily mix of Western dishes and Thai cuisine using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The diving itself is the reason to come this far. Black Rock is a remote granite pinnacle rising from deep water, where strong currents bring manta rays, grey reef sharks and nurse sharks past. Western Rocky's underwater arch and tunnel system, covered in soft corals, is one of the most photogenic sites in the Andaman Sea. Shark Cave offers a calmer contrast: a shallow cave where nurse and bamboo sharks rest during the day, surrounded by healthy hard coral gardens. The Mergui Archipelago season is short, with trips scheduled from mid-January to the end of March when the sea is usually at its calmest, and the visibility at its best. This is also the period when manta ray encounters are most likely, and whale shark sightings are possible, though as with all wildlife, nothing can ever be guaranteed. This trip is suited to Advanced Open Water divers with a minimum of 30 logged dives; Nitrox certification and experience in strong currents are strongly recommended given how exposed several sites are. This is how we repaired our damper plate on our Volvo Penta MD2030. We discovered it was damaged when we removed it to change the rear oil seal during the engine rebuild. It was made by a company called Centaflex and we found the correct spares by referencing the number found on the coupling. It was a straightforward DIY job...
