Free Nav Rules Course - https://www.nauticed.org/powerboating-courses/view/navigation-rules-for-powerboats?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=lSg1tKSKTEk New England Propeller - https://neprop.com Prop strike after hitting a rock or the bottom? This guide explains why you should NOT DIY a prop repair and what to do next. The damage you can’t see—pitch shift, blade alignment, balance/runout—can quickly lead to vibration, lower-unit wear (outboard/sterndrive), or cutlass-bearing damage (inboard). Home tools can’t measure pitch/balance accurately; a professional prop shop uses pitch blocks, runout gauges, and balancing equipment and provides before/after reports so you know it’s right. What we cover: - Don’t DIY: Grinding material off a blade makes imbalance and weakens the prop - Hidden damage: Pitch moved, blade alignment off, hub issues—even if it looks “okay” Inspect after a strike: - Outboard/IO: prop, edges, hub, lower unit (leaks, noise, metal in oil) - Inboard: prop, shaft, strut, rudder, cutlass bearing (play/heat) - Aluminum vs stainless: Aluminum with big metal missing is often not cost-effective to repair Stainless is pricier and more repairable—worth professional work - Twin props: If one looks bent, “just check” the other—often both need work - Fix it promptly: Running with vibration accelerates wear and raises costs - What a shop does: Measure pitch, correct alignment, true & balance; provide pre/post reports Quick After-Strike Checklist: Stop DIY ideas—no hammers, torches, or grinding Visual check: nicks, bends, cracks, missing edge, cup/rake distortion Spin test: obvious wobble/runout at blade tips Lower unit / seal check (OB/IO): new drips, milky/metallic oil, noise Inboard gear: shaft straightness, strut alignment, cutlass bearing play Bring it in: ask the prop shop for measurement + balance and a report FAQ Can I repair a bent boat prop at home? No. Without pitch blocks and balancing, you risk worse vibration and drivetrain damage. How do I know if my prop is too damaged to fix? Large metal loss on aluminum is often a replace call. Stainless can usually be repaired by a shop. What symptoms show hidden prop/shaft damage? New vibration bands, loss of WOT RPM, leaks at seals, heat at cutlass bearing, metal in gear oil. Why fix it quickly after a prop strike? Running out of balance stresses the lower unit, bearings, seals, and mounts, increasing repair costs. 00:00 - Intro 00:16 - Fixing it Yourself 00:39 - Vibration Wear 00:57 - After Strike Checklist 01:10 - How Damaged is To Damaged 01:33 - Damage You Can't See 02:09 - Outro #powerboat #boating #boat
Preview of upcoming interview with son of Bill Cook, co-inventor and maker of the legendary Jet Squid lure. This lure from the 1950s is highly sought after by collectors of vintage lures. This interview takes place at Briar Cooks house, the same house that he lives in today where the lure was first created in 1949. Briar Cook now 88 shares the stories of the EB Norris Jet Squid. His father Bill Cook was EB Norris partner when the lures were invented, perfected and sold in the 1950s
This was one of the most incredible whale encounters we’ve ever experienced. While floating in our dinghy near Minerva Reef, a curious juvenile humpback whale swam right up to us — completely unannounced — giving us the closest pass we’ve ever had from a wild whale. I had my Sony camera ready for breaching shots (without the underwater housing!), so I captured the moment from above while Rich grabbed the GoPro for underwater footage. I combined both angles to create this unforgettable clip — the whale gliding past the dinghy, the powerful tail swish, and the crystal-clear underwater view. What makes this encounter even more amazing is that this is the same young whale we swam with later that day. He followed our boat, hung out at the stern, and waited while we geared up to get in the water one at a time. Two other whales stayed deeper in the background, but this little explorer wanted to interact. Fun fact: Juvenile humpback whales are known for being curious and playful. They often approach boats to investigate and can rotate their massive pectoral fins like wings to maneuver gently around humans. This day was easily the best part of our whole season — a rare, magical connection with a wild animal. If you love whales, marine life, diving, or raw ocean encounters, this video is for you. 💙🐋 Don’t forget to LIKE, COMMENT, and SUBSCRIBE for more incredible wildlife moments from the reef! #WhaleCameRIGHTToUs #ClosestWhaleEncounterEver #UnexpectedWhaleVisit #WildWhaleTHISClose #InsaneWhaleInteraction #CuriousHumpbackAtTheDinghy #HeSwamStraightTowardUs #CaughtAboveAndBelow #WhaleFollowedOurBoat #PlayfulWhaleSurprise

In this video, I spend a second day sailing beautiful Angostura Reservoir near Hot Springs, South Dakota. Angostura is a state recreation area in the southwest corner of the state about 6 hours from Colorado Springs. They have a great group of local Precision sailboat owners with several P-18s, P-21s and a P-23 among the fleet. The reservoir boasts 4,700 surface acres, sandy beaches, a well-protected marina, public restrooms and much steadier sailing winds than where I normally sail in the Rocky Mountains. Confused about mooring pennants? In this guide we break down how to choose the right mooring pennant for your boat size and your harbor conditions—whether you’re in an exposed mooring field with chop or a river mooring with strong current. You’ll learn the three common mooring pennant setups (single, double, and Y pennant), how to size the eye to your deck cleats, where chafe gear should go, and when to add floats so the pickup stays on the surface. We also cover hardware options (thimbles, galvanized vs stainless) and durability upgrades like UV/marine growth protective dips. I caught an 8-pound catfish from Lewisville Lake, TX and brought it straight from the water to the cutting board. In this video, I show how I clean and fillet a big catfish the right way—no waste, no shortcuts. This is Part 1 of a 3-part series where I turn this catch into homemade fish balls from the galley. Part 2 covers prep and seasoning, and Part 3 shows the full recipe. Life afloat, from catch to cook. Sailing Into Nirvana. Cheers!
In this video, Peter Bresnan from OneSails Palma answers all the questions raised during our presentation of our latest development: the IFS Multi Tradewind Sail. When we introduced the IFS Multi Tradewind Sail, many questions came up about sail rigging, handling, ease of use, and the technology behind this re-invented sail system. In this Q&A session, Peter explains how the sail works, how it can be used on both multihulls and monohulls, how it can be rigged depending on the boat, how it is handled, and how it improves efficiency and ease of operation for modern yacht sailing—among many other topics. Whether you are a professional sailor, yacht owner, or simply interested in marine innovation and smart sailing systems, this video will give you clear and practical answers. If you haven’t seen the original video, you can watch it here: https://youtu.be/A7yAXAIRsE4?si=Ty61dymtt14GiLHs 👇 Find the list of questions below 00:00 – Introduction | IFS Multi Tradewind Sail Q&A 00:24 – Is the concept of the sail actually innovative? 01:49 – What improvements justify the attention? 03:39 – How is it compared to a symmetric spinnaker? 05:04 – Does it perform beyond pure DDW? 06:18 – Does the sail stabilize the boat or induce roll? 06:50 – How does the airflow behave between the two wings? 07:37 – How does it behave in light wind? 09:12 – What is the TWA/TWS you can sail with both configurations? 10:24 – Does the design work in the same way for mono- and multihulls? 11:36 – What is its size? 13:20 – How does it work in cats/tris with no backstay? 14:01 – Can the sail overload the mast or stay? 15:40 – Is chafe an issue where the two sails overlap? 17:25 – What happens when the wind comes up? 19:14 – Is the double-thickness weight a concern? 19:44 – Is there a risk of collapse or flogging? 20:52 – Risk of pitchpoling a cat? 22:41 – Is the ‘can’t get it down’ scenario a real risk? 23:52 – Is it an easy solution for short handed crews? 24:38 – Can it be reefed or partially furled? 25:13 – Is it manageable by one person? 25:45 – Does it become dangerous in a squall? 27:06 – Is it only for big cats? 27:40 – Does it occupy too much space? 28:06 – Is it worth deploying for short runs? 28:36 – How does furling work with two wings? 28:53 – Which devices are needed to make it work properly? 29:08 – Is any special fitting on the mast and boat necessary? 29:30 – How difficult is it to trim it? 29:54 – How difficult is it to steer to keep it working when opened in twin setup? 30:14 – Is it useful also for normal cruising, not long passages? With safety and ease of handling in mind, we walk through the hardware and layout that make this system work: a hard point at the foot of the mast with a triple block, a deck organizer, a coach-roof winch to port, a double clutch, and a cam cleat. Our single reef line for the mainsail runs aft to the clutch alongside the main halyard, while the control line for the hydraulic boom vang is led back to a dedicated cam cleat. Combined with our already-installed roller furler for the genoa, this setup allows us to manage sail shape, reefing, and sail handling entirely from the cockpit. No trips forward, no scrambling on deck—just controlled, deliberate sail handling where it’s safest. We’re well aware that single-line reefing comes with compromises in sail trim, but for our sailing style and conditions, the trade-off is worth it. The goal is simple: reduce risk, simplify operations, and make the boat easier to handle short-handed. If you’re curious about practical, old-school boats adapted for modern sailing realities, this one’s for you. Fair winds, The Sailing Good Old Boats Crew
Many older sailboats still run wire halyards, and converting to modern rope is absolutely doable—but there’s a common mistake that destroys new line fast: old wire sheaves get scored over time and can chew through rope in weeks. In this video, we explain the right way to upgrade: inspect/replace the masthead sheaves first, then choose the correct halyard—whether that’s Dyneema for high performance or a simpler double braid for cruising. We also cover why wire-to-rope splices are no longer typical, and why modern rope halyards are often easier to manage and repair than wire. A glimpse from our latest Dreamtime Sail Episode but cruising’s not always blue skies, calm seas and fair winds and that’s certainly not what we got on Our Dreamtime in Sulawesi for this episode. Try sunshine and wind followed by squalls, followed by blue skies and no wind followed by squalls. Welcome to the reality of cruising. Fortunately when we got there, Pulau Labengke once again proved a beautiful, calm and very safe anchorage for us to kick back and relax for a couple of days before pushing further south. What makes a great sailing or boating instructor.....certifications, or real competence? In this NauticEd video, we break down what we look for in instructors: people who genuinely care about student outcomes, teach real-world judgment, and raise the standard on the water. In this video, you’ll learn: How to think about certifying bodies (RYA, ASA, US Sailing, IYT, etc.) beyond the logo The difference between handing out certifications and building true competence The mindset NauticEd expects: instructors who take responsibility for real-life readiness and safety Become a NauticEd Instructor (Sail or Power): Apply here 👇 https://www.nauticed.org/instructor/signup #sailingschool #sailing #boating #captain

We cover: Eligibility basics (including the common 5 net tons threshold) Why documentation can help create a clearer federal record of ownership/mortgages What you file (forms + bill of sale), timeline, and using a documentation agency Dinghy + trailer registration and why state rules still matter What documents must be kept on board ⚠️ State requirements vary—always verify your local rules during closing. 00:00 - State Registration vs USCG Documentation 00:11 - US Coast Guard Documentation 00:25 - Why Document? CURRENTLY CRUISING IN THE BAHAMAS In the southern hemisphere, where the winds roar and the waters are deep and unforgiving, you’ll find Cape Town, South Africa. This location has a high demand for capable BlueWater vessels. Robertson & Caine met this demand with their Leopard 58: Sea Dog. Sea Dog was built in 2020 as a BlueWater sailing catamaran and, through multiple upgrades in 2023 and 2025, is equipped for both long and short voyages. Designed for space and livability, she’ll comfortably house family and friends without compromising storage or cruising efficiency. Sea Dog is a capable sailing yacht seeking a captain to put her to use. Whether you aim to spend time cruising in the Caribbean, enjoying easier, shorter sailing days and a friendly community, or you want to stretch beyond into the South Pacific, finding undiscovered islands, sailing across oceans, and immersing yourself in new cultures, Sea Dog will get you there. And once aboard, that intention becomes immediately clear. If you are interested, click on this link: https://bluewatercruisingboats.com/boat-listing/2020-leopard-58/
