Ahoy, what a great feeling to round Lands End and enter the huge bay of Cabo San Lucas. Of course the commercial circus with tons of jet skies and party boats was swirling around us like flies but Cabo has a few quiet spots as well and we were up to find them. The change of the conditions couldn't be any clearer. The moment we rounded that rock it was summer. The cold wind of the pacific is blocked by the mountains. The water is warmer even though it's only the far entrance of the sea of cortez. All of a sudden we could spend ages in the water and Fay couldn't get enough of it. But because Cabo is Cabo, we only stayed a few days. Enough to explore beaches and city, stock up with fresh veggies and leave before you lose your temper to one of the panga captains or jet skies passing by with full speed just an arms length away from your boat. So many brave people telling us their stories, sharing their footage, and all while they are receiving no outside help for themselves. The mangroves in Carriacou were supposed to be safe. A hurricane hole where those who couldn’t escape the storm by sailing further south, would be able to tie up their boats and sit out the worst of the hurricane. It didn’t work. In the past two weeks cruisers here have been helping each other recover boats. Most boats are badly damaged, others have sunk to the bottom of this shallow lagoon. Nearly all the boats have been looted. Operation Cruisers Aid is a charity that started out as cruisers helping people on land. They have provided much needed emergency aid. However, they have agreed that since the bigger NGOs have arrived, OCA could provide any future funds they receive to help cruisers. They have already provided a crash pump and flotation aids to help get boats out before they are lost. They are now coordinating the relief effort for cruisers here. Its our very own island where we muck around and Margarida goes native and climbs a coconut palm too high and then has trouble get back down again. We are so excited to share a (somewhat haphazard) tour of our live aboard sailing yacht (is it still a sailing yacht if it doesn't have a mast!?) - A 2008 Beneteau 49 - This is our first time seeing our new boat in any depth - and we couldn't be more happy about it. It's quite the tiny house upgrade from our 24 foot Skoolie and more luxury than I think we ever planned on - it has a fridge and a freezer, a water heater...and even air conditioning!! With that said, it's going to be quite the project just getting her seaworthy, let alone ready to circumnavigate...you should see the repairs list forming already! And all that's before upgrades...solar panels, dinghy davits, solar arch, water maker, lithium batteries? washing machine?! We'll see what ends up making it in and what doesn't...only the budget (and our minimalists desire) will tell! This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. Riley, myself, and two other boats drop the pick in southern Barbuda to volunteer in the clean up after the devastation of hurricane Irma. It was a real eye opener having spent time in the town, talking to the locals and seeing how progress on rebuilding the island was coming along. At this stage they say it is going to take them at least another two years to get back to 'normal'. We also run out of cooking gas and have to resort too camp fires for dinner, which is always fun. We sail to Aitutaki in the Cook Islands when disaster strikes. Our buddy boat which is a 54ft Bavaria gets stuck on a reef after we were told that the channel entering the harbour had a depth of 3 meters... SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. It provides a great atmosphere for cruisers and tourist as it boarders a popular anchorage and you can pull your dinghy/power boat right up to the beach and enjoy volleyball, stingrays, and fresh conch salad. Would highly recommend checking this place out! 0:36 Removing the straps that hold the mainsail flaked nicely to the boom. 1:36 I pull the slack out of the main halyard and keep tension while Andre clips the shackle onto the main sail, so that the line doesn't get snagged on the spreaders. 1:51 Our water maker intake is Tee'd off from the same seacock/thru hull valve as our engine raw water cooling system. So we always want to make sure we have the water flowing towards the engine when we are underway. Even though we aren't intending on using the engine today, we switch it over in case we need it in a pinch! 2:32 We have our first reef in the main today (the blue line taut at the clew), the loose black line just above this is our second reef line. 3:02 I raise the main sail and slack the main sheet while Andre starts to pull the anchor. I let the boom swing freely so the sail luffs, preventing wind from catching and starting to sail before we're ready. 3:57 Andre continues to pull our 6 ton vessel towards the anchor. We currently have a 45lb Mantus anchor and chain intended for a 50 foot catamaran (130 feet of 3/8" chain) on our 34 foot monohull :D GO DRE GO 5:56 Dre needs a small assist on the last bit here, to help dislodge the anchor. So, I sheet in the main sail and fall off from the wind slightly to begin sailing upwind and help him tug it out. With no engine to assist, this is a slow and steady process :D. 9:42 With one reef in the main, we don't have quite enough windage power to bring us around. So we set up the pull a small amount of headsail to give us an extra push. 10:15 We've been having issue with our furling line spooling unevenly and over riding. So we pull it out just a pinch to bring us around, until I can get on the bow to guide the furling line through to spool evenly and get the entire sail out. 14:20 I very carefully apply pressure to the line in order to guide it evenly onto the drum. This is to avoid 1.) the line overriding and 2.) the line spooling at one end and filling the drum before the entire sail is unwrapped. 22:33 the harsh realities of a lot of clicker ticking, seaweed and no fish... sometimes it just be like that! 26:00 If you made it this far, cheers to you!
