Episode #300 - Sailing Alone Series (no.5) Hello Friends, This is the latest installment of my Sailing Alone Series. On this film I sail 1100 nautical miles to New Zealand from Fiji after a full season in the islands of the South Pacific. This was easily the most challenging passage I have had since leaving Hawaii with conditions being either extremely calm or heavy weather. I was faced with days of being becalmed then days of 30+ knots of wind and rain and then back to being becalmed. This went on for the entire 15 day passage. My engine only lasted long enough to get me outside the reefs of Fiji and after I shut it off it never restarted again. I ended up rebuilding it in Opua, New Zealand. We found one of those spots and were extreemly happy because it was just before we planed to haul out ZERO again. So it was our last anchorage before we would stay in a dirty dusty place full of boatwork and broken dreams.. That we ran out of propane on the passage across the sea of Cortez just added the extra touch of Robinson Crusoe feeling. Beating our brains out sailing into 35 knot winds while getting pounded by BIG waves and never ending squalls.... This video definitely shows the less glamorous part of our lifestyle! It was our last sail on Encore, before we fly back to France and pick up our Catamaran to finally go sailing in the thing. We left beautiful Mays Bay and head back to the mainland, to jump in a helicopter and see the places we had just sailed to from above. The Great Barrier Reef is pretty stunning. Well, Whitehaven Beach has got to be one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen.
