We were so excited to sail across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean! We worked so hard on the boat and planned our provisioning and storage and THEN... 1 hour into our test sail to Cabo Verde, we had to turn back. Three new issues came up. Thanks again to my husband, Brett Pierce, for the outro music. Later, everyone we spoke to said we made the best choice—not just to turn back that day but also to wait for next season. Apparently it’s pretty common as people discover issues with their boat, especially if the boat is new to them. Someone asked me, Did we chicken out? Like was crossing the ocean too scary? I laughed a bit because crossing the ocean felt fine, it felt right, I was excited—but waiting until next season is actually a bit more scary because all my plan are gone. I’m entering the unknown; our financial plans must change, our career plans are askew, seeing our loved ones has to be rescheduled… literally everything about our lives has to be reworked. The one thing I know for sure is I’m not going to stop sailing for sustainability. We’ll of course take advantage of being in the best place in the world to work on the boat, completing some needed projects and maybe some fun ones too. Another friend asked me if I was sad about not crossing the Atlantic and not being in the Caribbean this year. I guess I am a little, but I really can’t complain. I’m excited to be here and engage in some remote work with my Earth Law colleagues and produce meaningful content. This is just a huge change to adapt to and there are so many unknowns I’m still wrapping my head around it. But that’s a good sailing life lesson. We will be confronted with change, with all our plans going to shit, with a huge amount of unknowns, with things outside of our control. All we can do is work with what we have to make the best of it. We must be patient with the situation and gentle with ourselves.

One way is to use a small device with use of a microcontroller to train offline. This video shows the way of implementation and the coding too. It is implemented with an ATtiny85 and an ESP32. Have fun

Diese Folge knüpft an das Safety Briefing unter Deck an (Folge 28) – jetzt geht’s nach oben. Clemens und Claus starten mit einem geführten Deckwalk: Wo halte ich mich sicher, wo sind die Picking Points fürs Einpicken, wie bewege ich mich mit gutem Stand – besonders, wenn Hektik ausbricht (Delfine am Bug!)? Grundregeln: langsam gehen, Schwerpunkt immer „ins Boot“, und bitte nicht barfuß – geschlossene Deckschuhe schlagen Freiheitsgefühl.  Anschließend die Seenotsignalmittel: Lagerung oberhalb der Wasserlinie, ernsthafte Einweisung, Handhabung zeigen lassen. Wichtig: Fallschirmraketen statistisch paarweise zünden; Rot = Not, Grün = Entwarnung, Weiß = Aufmerksamkeit – und alles stets weg vom Gesicht halten. Das Alu der Fackeln wird extrem heiß – Training und Videos helfen, Respekt zu entwickeln.  Winschen & Schoten: Sicherheit vor „Gewohnheitsrecht“. Schot nur aus der Faust führen, kleine Finger zur Winch, nie beide Hände um die laufende Schot – sonst klemmen acht Finger statt einem. Drehrichtung ermitteln (ggf. den Pfeil oben beachten oder Winch einmal drehen).  Rettungsmittel am Heck: Wurfleine (werfen üben!), Rettungsring mit Blinklicht und Treibanker, Dan-Buoy/Markierungsboje (Notfallzeichen – nicht für Übungen), sowie Jonbuoy als Ein-Mann-Bergungshilfe. Dazu die Rettungsinsel für die Crew: „Step up“ – so spät wie möglich vom Boot in die Insel übersteigen; Reihenfolge, Painter-Line, was mitnehmen (Grab-Bag: Medikamente, Wasser, Signalmittel, SOLAS-Card).  Notpinne & Steuern in der Havarie: Position der Notpinne zeigen, Montage erklären (ggf. Griff nach achtern), Kräfte beachten und mit Taljen/Leinen über die Winchen „steuern“ (Backbord fieren, Steuerbord dicht – oder umgekehrt). Wer nur mit Rad fährt, unterschätzt Ruderdruck; Autopilot kaschiert Probleme.  Gefahrenzonen klar ansprechen: Patenthals und Großschot/Traveler im Cockpit sind Unfallschwerpunkte – Kopf runter bei „Baum!“, Wege an Deck definieren (vor den Wanten bleiben) und POB-Manöver demonstrieren, sobald es sicher geht. 🌺 Aventure à Bora Bora – L’ascension de la montagne Ohue ! 🌴 Après plusieurs jours de navigation, nous arrivons enfin à Bora Bora avec nos bateaux copains : Hélia et Te Ava. Le lagon est d’un bleu incroyable,😍 et pour découvrir l’île autrement, nous décidons de nous lancer dans une grande aventure : gravir la montagne Ohue. Pendant 4 heures de montée intense, entre rires, pauses, et quelques glissades, nous grimpons ensemble jusqu’au sommet. Là-haut, le spectacle est juste époustouflant : ❤️ une vue INCROYABLE sur les deux pitons et le lagon de Bora Bora… un moment suspendu dans le temps. La descente sera tout aussi sportive, mais chaque pas valait la peine.
