Bahamas in the wake, Med on the horizon @yachtbold

What started as a normal sail from Georgetown to Long Island, quickly turned into one of the scariest moments of our journey. Just after we arrived and dropped anchor, Brent fell from the boom—nearly a 10-foot drop. His dad saw the fall from the flybridge and thought he might land on his feet, but he didn’t. I ran upstairs to find Brent laid out on his back, pale and in pain. He couldn’t move without hurting, and we feared the worst: a broken back. Thankfully, he was able to move a little, but he couldn’t put weight on his foot. With no urgent care option, we consulted with our doctor back home, who guided us until we could find help. The next morning, the island clinic informed us there was no x-ray machine anywhere nearby and suggested flying to Nassau. Instead, we sailed back to Georgetown where we knew x-rays were available. The results: multiple fractures in Brent’s foot. The orthopedic specialist later confirmed most were old injuries, with just one serious new break. No surgery needed—thankfully—but he’ll be in a walking cast for six weeks before easing back onto his feet. While Brent flew to Gainesville for treatment, I stayed in Georgetown with the kids and their grandparents aboard SeaDog. We spent a few extra days there, said our goodbyes to Brent's parents, and then set sail with friends toward the remote Ragged Islands in the southwestern Bahamas. With 16–20 knots of wind pushing us along at 7–8 knots (even hitting 8.8!), we made the trip in great conditions. Brent was on crutches, Wes was happy with his Nintendo Switch, and the rest of us enjoyed the ride. The next couple days, we explored Flamingo Cay, swimming through the salt pond and its famous dinghy cave—an unforgettable adventure after such a stressful week. Dunk Island was once a thriving resort destination before Cyclone Yasi struck in 2011, leaving much of it in ruins. Today, the island is slowly coming back to life. There’s a beautiful new glamping area, a fantastic amenities block, a relaxed café serving cold beers and great food, and a stunning beach perfect for unwinding. While the old resort buildings still bear the scars of the storm – with trees even growing through some of the rooves – it’s heartening to see signs of renewal. Dunk Island remains a magical spot, and it’s well worth the visit to experience both its natural beauty and its story of resilience. Thanks for watching. In this episode, I sail close to shore and squeeze a narrow area between rocks. I like sailing close to shore when the wind is light. Being able to sail in constricted areas is an essential boat-handling skill and worthwhile to practice when the right conditions present themselves. In this case, the winds were light and coming from my stern, so I felt comfortable slowly passing through these narrow areas. Would you feel comfortable sailing between these rocks? We depart Taormina, Sicily after one night and sail to Marina di Reposto Porto D'Etna for a couple days of work from the marina. From he marina we have a stunning view of Mt Etna. While there we tour the beautiful city on the hill of Taormina and Nicole and her friends spend the day at a beach club while I repair the swim platform. An incredibly powerful gas spring came loose. I manage to re-extend this spring with dyneema and a winch and safely reattach it. We leave from the marina and head for mainland Italy in favorable winds and find that the new Hallberg Rassy hull form loves speed through a choppy seaway with an angle off the waves. Admittedly, I first discovered this in the Baltic but needed a bit of a reminder.

49er and FX Fleets Sweden’s Vilma Bobeck & Ebba Berntsson mastered the conditions best, winning the first two races and finishing second in the last to jump into third and open a gap on those behind. Australia’s Laura Harding and Annie Wilmot continued their march up the leaderboard, hopping over Italy’s Sofia Giunchiglia & Giulia Schio, who could only finish nineteenth in the last race, but stayed second overall. As all others struggled, consistent excellence also rewarded France’s Erwan Fischer & Clément Péquin with the lead after they finished 3, 1, 2 in their three races to move ahead of Ireland’s Robert Dickson & Sean Waddilove. Tomorrow, the final day of the qualifying rounds, the conditions will be very different again with a southwesterly wind, so we’ll have to adapt. The idea is to maintain a good mood, get good starts, and continue working on communication and the mental aspects. Winning a medal here is a goal. We love the Hyères sailing area; the wind is constantly changing, it’s really great. We’re determined to perform well here. The World Championships are in three weeks, the 49er fleet is strong, and the level of competition is exceptional. We know it won’t be easy to win a medal.
