🌍 Épisode 49 Le doute s’installe… on change de plan en pleine navigation 😅⛵ L’aventure continue dans les Grenadines avec une navigation qui ne se déroule pas exactement comme prévu… et c’est aussi ça la vraie vie en catamaran. Nous quittons Anse La Roche, au nord de Carriacou, pour mettre le cap sur Union Island. Une traversée tranquille qui nous permet de rejoindre l’île afin d’y effectuer notre clearance d’entrée. À peine le temps de poser pied à terre que nous levons déjà l’ancre pour repartir : direction Mayreau, plus précisément Windward Bay. Mais une fois sur place, après plusieurs tours dans le mouillage, un doute s’installe. Et en bateau, on le sait bien : s’il y a un doute, il n’y a pas de doute. Les conditions ne nous inspirent pas totalement confiance, alors nous prenons la décision de ne pas rester et de continuer la navigation. Cap immédiat sur un lieu mythique des Grenadines : les Tobago Cays. Un décor de carte postale qui ne déçoit jamais. Eau turquoise, ambiance paisible et sensation d’être au bout du monde… on vous emmène avec nous profiter pleinement de cet endroit unique. Pour terminer cet épisode en beauté, nous partageons un moment très spécial : le barbecue sur la plage proposé sur place. This evening I’m taking a quiet wander along the docks in Cherbourg, getting a feel for the marina and the boats gathered here. It’s a fascinating mix — very different answers to the same core problem: how to go to sea, and how to live out there safely, comfortably, and well. Along the dock we look at a Hallberg-Rassy 49, a custom French offshore boat, and an aluminium high-latitude expedition yacht. Each reflects a distinct design philosophy, and it’s always revealing to see how those ideas translate into real boats, in the real world. I also talk about meeting the team from Garcia Yachts aboard Osprey. Their curiosity and enthusiasm was a genuine pleasure, and on Monday I’ll be visiting the yard to look more closely at their work — including the Garcia 60 they’ve kindly invited me to explore. It’s the middle of winter, we’re still on the hard, and a sub-freezing cold snap has settled in—so this episode of our sailing refit looks a little different. When temperatures drop below freezing, outdoor projects grind to a halt, but refit life doesn’t stop. In this video, we show what winter boat work really looks like when you’re living between a boatyard and an apartment and doing everything you can to keep moving forward. With the help of two space heaters, Shawn heads out to the boat to tackle interior refit projects that can be done despite the cold. He works on electrical wiring, continues building the fuel polisher system, connects plumbing to the fresh water tanks, and installs pumps in the bilge—slow, careful progress in tight spaces while trying to stay warm enough to function. Meanwhile, Geri stays back at the apartment—she’s far less cold-tolerant, and skipping the boat during this deep freeze is honestly saving her sanity. Being warm, rested, and functional means she can take care of herself and stay energized for what’s ahead, instead of just enduring the cold. If you’re refitting a sailboat in cold climates, living through winter on the hard, or just curious what boat life looks like when sailing season is still months away, this episode captures the quiet, unglamorous, but necessary side of the journey. ► For the first presentation of the Aventura brand in the United States, the manufacturer chose to showcase the 38 Fly, one of the four models in the 38 family. The power catamaran, launched just over a year ago in its Sport Cruiser version, is also offered in three other versions; the Multihulls Mag community is well acquainted with the Sedan version, which graced the cover of our latest Special Motorboat Issue. The fourth model in the family will be the Sport, featuring a completely open living area. ► Let's return to the 38 Fly, which had its world premiere at the IMS: the deck layout retains the main features of the SC version – except that the galley is positioned on the exterior side – while the interior layout is very similar to the Sedan version, with a saloon to port and a galley to starboard. Access to the flybridge is via a (somewhat steep) staircase from the aft cockpit. Upstairs, there's room for 10 people; you can (still!) enjoy an outdoor kitchen and, of course, a helm station.
